Descent was one of the very first games I played back in 1996 when I got my first PC along with Doom and Duke Nukem 3D (they all were shareware versions though)...So glad that Im now able to play all of these games again and full versions, either by downloading them from GoG or from Xbox Live Arcade =)
@DDReaper16 Well I downloaded this (and Descent II) yesterday from Good Old Games (GoG), and it works perfectly, atleast on my laptop. Dont know how it works with dual or quadcore PCs though, but usually GoG team has done great work to ensure that the games work on any system. You dont even have to download DOS-programs seperately, and manually start the game, GoG team has done it all for you. Ofcourse it would be nice if the graphics would have been improved a little, but doesnt really matter
@Balnazzardi so did I and they use it through dosbox. They just have a code set up so it runs it with the desired setting. Updated graphics would kick ass but it is still great either way
Descent 1/2/3 AMAZING GAMES AND GAMEPLAYS this game has something that no other game had i don't know what it is... this series are so underrated.
PLEASE INTERPLAY WE WANT A DESCENT 4!!! stop working on "Legendary Wars:

Awww man!! I remember bein 6 years old, sittin next to my dad watchin him play this and then playin it myself. Ahhhh, what great memories! Thanks for uploading this!
if ever there was an old school PC game just SCREAMING for a remake, this is it.... updated graphics and online multiplayer, mixed with Descents classic vertigo inducing 3D movement and the "oh goodie, you finished the level, NOW FLY! FLY FOR YOUR LIFE!!" gameplay would be instant win with many gamers, both old and new.
found out this was on DS homebrew and i wanted to see what it looks like and i think i have already played this just didn't know the name of the game. thanks :D
This game was pretty innovative at the time. Instead of making a simple Doom clone they went ahead and did something completely different by allowing the player to move freely in any direction.
I got DOSBox 0.72 and I got descent running now but I cant get the 360 controller to work? Any other programs I need to get the 360 controller to work?
@Derekjustis: You're better off using dx1 rebirth to run the descent data files. I can use the original xbox controller with it, so it should support the 360 controller fine.
Is there anybody out that can help me install this game on my computer with the use of the xbox360 controller? I want to use the xbox360 controller SO BAD!
Help! My shareware version is playing too fast and I don't know how to slow it down! There's the D1x/D2x for full versions, but is there ANY way to slow down the shareware versions? Please, any info would be worth its weight in gold!
No, you can't. You can either turn around by pressing the arrow keys or slide by doing the same while holding the [Alt] key. DOS games usually didn't have any mouse support or they weren't designed to play them in the same way as in later games.
You absolutely can make the ship slide & turn & even roll at the same time. If you check the controls, you can assign different keys to different individual movements or you can definately use the mouse if you have a mouse driver installed.
@CuteFloor Slide-and-turn is possible; in fact it's a very important manoeuvre! Use the numeric keypad or re-map the keys as desired. You can for example set up FPS-style strafing on the left hand and steering on the mouse.
@CuteFloor Sure you can. Just use a different keyboard or better yet use a joystick - thats what it was made for back then. Oh and by the way, there IS mouse support since version 1.0 of the Shareware version of Descent.
I used to play this game years ago. I remember you can slide an turn in the same time. I used the numpad for these movements.. 1 and 3 for slide.. 7 and 9 to roll + and Enter for up and down.. A and Z to go forward and reverse.
I used to play this game years ago. I remember you can slide an turn in the same time. I used the numpad for these movements.. 1 and 3 for slide.. 7 and 9 to roll + and Enter for up and down.. A and Z to go forward and reverse.
@CuteFloor Sorry cutefloor, but that!s just not true. You can and could play descent using a mouse, in which case you could turn and slide at the same time.
That's not an excuse for not being able to accelerate/reverse while sliding in at least one direction on a keyboard. Yes, the default controls for Descent were intended for a mouse and were crap for keyboard play, but I've got it setup so I can play using only a keyboard and I'm capable of movement in multiple axes at once. Trichording is obviously a bit too tricky without a mouse, but using the numpad is the way to go when using just a keyboard.
For reference, 4862 are my directional/pitch keys obviously, 13 are slide horizontal, +/enter are slide vertical, and 79 are for banking, with thumb on Numpad Insert for bombs. Left hand on ASD keys with pinkie finger on LShift, D for Primary Fire, S for accel, A for reverse and shift for Secondary (F for Flares).
This setup's worked for me for years and due to the keys used you can easy fire + move in multiple axes. Mouse is obviously still preferable to this, but it works.
OMG, could never forget that music! I can't even begin to tell ya how many memories this brings back, countless hours on the modem with the buddies. That's one HUGE thing that Descent had over Doom, Descent was SO EASY to get a modem game running and Doom was "tooth pulling agony"!
The 5 Chaos levels were our favorite, especially #3!
Oohh I didn't remember that you could have the vulcan cannon in the first level. Anyway great game. I made it to the final level where there were a huge place full of enemies and the final boss appearing and disappearing from nowhere.
@NyteSama Massively agree with this. Must have been about 6 and my brother used to play the demo all the time. Whenever i had a go the countdown scared me shitless..
d1x 1.43 had OGL support and native windows xp support as well. As well as built in multi capability which did not require something like Kali or kahn to run. Msg me for more details
i used to be scared shitless of those things on 5:24 and also those green ones with the pinchers in the later levels.. great vid, i never beat this game, but me and my brother got pretty far in it. how many levels were there? all i know is there was alot
I absolutely hated the sound those silver robots with the vulcan cannons made. It was enough to prevent me from playing it, which was too bad, since it was an awesome game.
wow, my dad got this when we bought a windows 98, the demo came with it, i was like 5 or 6 then, used to always play this same level over and over with my dad...ohh the good ol' days, im like 13 now, and hes soooo busy, we might get descent 3 just for fun, cant play the original tho..dont have a 98 to play it on. gawd, i miss those game, not that shit today like finial fantasy, if you like that shit dont flame me freedom on speech
This was the first game I ever truly loved. I still remember waking up extra early before school everyday so I could play it for half an hour before the bus came
I have the Macintosh version and it blew me away. So many sweet, sweet, memories playing this game. Also the Macintosh has different music which is way better and has high quality.
I love the music too. Back in the days of my 486, I didn't have a MIDI soundcard. To this day the only "right" way to play the descent music is the FM synth.
man, this game is what taught me how to type without looking back in the day... my like whole keyboard was mapped out. lol. The soundtrack was killer too.
The demo (first 15 levels) came bundled with the first PC I got (back in 1996). Loved it to death. lol.
I know what you mean. It came on my first PC, windows 95 I think it was. I was about 8 at the time I think. This video was enlightening, I was just transfixed, it brings back so many good memorys. It was like no other game, it gets your adrenaline going and your heart racing. I get the shivers just watching it. Wow.
It looks way better with Descent 1x, the openGL update, and in DOSbox the game gets REALLY choppy in the later levels, but the music is redone, not the original ones, which sucks.
The music on this sounds like it did when I played it nine years ago, now when I play Descent it sounds like a bunch of beeps. How does it sound all good like that?
It's not only click and play, that's right. I can't post how to use DOSBox because the length of comments is limited. So please look at the FAQ at the DOSBox website, there is a well instruction how to install and use DOSBox.
But unlike in the FAQ I advice to change following settings in the CPU section of the config file:
DXX-Rebirth is pretty good, sticks with how Descent 2 was originally played back in the day. Then there's D2X-XL with a bunch of enhancements. Almost like Descent 2 on steroids.
holy crap does this bring back memories

The mining bots have been infected with a virus causing them to turn against their human controllers and killing them.
Later on though you do get to more military installations.

these line can be typed in the dosbox command prompt as well but inserting them into the dosbox.conf file saves time.

It took me a weekend to get over being dizzy while playing Descent on back in 1995 :)
The lan games and awesome Net play and kickass player created levels... good times, good times

man, this game is what taught me how to type without looking back in the day... my like whole keyboard was mapped out.

Wow.

I remember that code all too well. I need to try and beat it without cheating.

That game was the reason why I mastered the QWERTY keyboard layout when I was in like grade 4. lol.

SpootKnight 4 years ago
That's because I played it in DOSBox, a complete DOS emulator. It also emulates the sound card, so it sounds like in many years ago :)

How do I set DOSBox up so I can run it? I've tried so hard to get it working.
SpootKnight 4 years ago
It's not only click and play, that's right. I can't post how to use DOSBox because the length of comments is limited. So please look at the FAQ at the DOSBox website, there is a well instruction how to install and use DOSBox.
But unlike in the FAQ I advice to change following settings in the CPU section of the config file:
core=dynamic
cycles=max

Haha.. Remember this game.. OWNS

How did you record this?? Man I used to kick ass in this game ;)

I used DOSBox, but you have to configure it properly to get it running well.

Too bad that there is no OpenGL port for that game. Just like terminator Future Shock. Same situation. :(

There actually is an OpenGL port. Look for DXX-Rebirth.
CuteFloor 5 years ago
Found it! :) Thank you so much!!
KRAFTWERK2K1 5 years ago
DXX-Rebirth is pretty good, sticks with how Descent 2 was originally played back in the day. Then there's D2X-XL with a bunch of enhancements. Almost like Descent 2 on steroids.

Whoa that really brought back some memories.
