I'm sure Goodman had little to do with this composition; he got his name on it probably at his insistence that "If you Want My Band To Play It" I have to be given a composer credit, not unlike Irving Mills sticking his name on everything Ellington wrote when he was the band's manager.
Mills even insisted (contractually) that all of Ellington's stuff be published either by "Mills Music" or "Gotham Music," both owned by Mills.
It's not flashy, but it's still some of the baddest melodic voice-leading on a guitar...EVER! He had many great solos, but this is my favorite. I love the way he avoids conflicting with the background horn figures.
What a great idea to transcribe these historical landmarks in music. I am eagerly awaiting transcribing and playing "West Blues" (Armstrong); "Body and Soul" (Hawkins) and all the other great musial landmarks. Thanks
I had great fun learning to play this these last couple of evenings! Thank you for this etude! I used to listen to the other version which has slightly more continuous runs in it, though when I play through it now on my own I find myself filling in the melodies as per the other version.
Are you planning to transcribe 'From Swing to Bop' any time?
I am a guitar player and I did not know that those notes were on the neck. I wonder how he found those. Did he play by ear or could he read the written notes?
This was his best solo. Once you get past his sound, his feel, and the way he outlines every chord with finesse, you have to consider the way he lays out during his solo when he knows the background figures are coming...just great musicianship.
That's some nice playing. You've got a really good jazz tone! I keep watching hese videos of people playing REALLY amazing jazz guitars that i then look up and realise i can't afford! I'm looking to buy an archtop style or semi hollowbody jazz guitar that's a bit more reasonably priced. Any suggestions?
Well I don't know anything about guitar playing (I'm a tuba player), but this is very enjoyable to listen to; you are so precise and clearly relaxed as you play. Love watching your fingers. Bravo!
What a coincidence! I did the same transcription in the same tune but which was played by BG on clarinet. In any case, you play stratospherically!!! Felicitats!!!!
What I admire in addition to the high quality of the teaching content and musicianship is that you don't waste time talking as so many do. The idea of windowing useful info in your postings is great. Keep up the great work.
@stringcordeta You probably didn't get the memo, but when you play a Gibson guitar on Youtube, you're suppose to flash the headstock, as if to say "take that, bitches." ROFL
Can i please, please have some work sheets/tabs/anything ales ?
PLEASE!
This is AMAZING!

Nice work. Charlie is still the hottest guitarist of all time (to me). Is that a 165 youre playing?
setforvol 2 years ago
You're right, Charlie is the father of electric guitar, tons of swing and groove. This guitar is a 1988 Gibson ES-175.
Thanks for your comment,
Cheers
