Wow! What a great sounding keyboard. I had totally forgot about these. I think the DW could give the Jupiter 8 a close run at a fraction of the price on the used market. Very nicely done vid.
As a kid, I had (still) the poly 800. My mom bought it for me brand new. After seeing the DW-8000 in some keyboard mag, I wanted it (& a Yamaha DX-7) sooo bad. A musician friend of my mom's talked me out of buying 1. He told me about some new technology called "sampling" & keyboards with "sampled" sounds/waveforms, etc. Thanks to my grandparents, I ended up with Roland D-10. I wish NOW, that I had got the DW-8000. In the mid-90's, traded the D-10 for a Juno-1.
@mRfinGerpRinTpiano I seriously doubt it. If my DW ever did have a "Piano" sound on it I'm sure I would have wiped it long ago. It does ok E.Piano patches but that would be missing the whole point and strength of this synth. I love the bass sounds, pads and twinkly analogue sounds it produces along with killer lead sounds. It can even do a passable CS80 Vangelis impersonation, look it up here on YouTube. ;)
man...now i dont know which one to get..somebody help me!! its down to buying ether juno alpha 2 or korg dw-8000 or a korg poly-61 and maybe a korg poly 800 lol
@lvrsnvy Depends what you want to do musically. I think the Poly 800 is the weakest sounding out of those although it has a nice character. I own all bar the Poly 61 and am quite happy but they sound completely different. The DW8000 seems far more advanced on the sound possibilities. I prefer the pads on the Alpha though and think its better suited to dance music. Be aware that the Korgs need to save and load sounds to tape which is a pain.
This is a wavetable instrument, with 16 different digitally sampled waveforms. It has two analog filters per voice and a digital delay. Korg was ahead of their time with their use of digitally sampled waveforms.
it would be nice to hear few of these sounds coming out of my dw-8000.. they're really impressive! would you share your bank? oh, btw, is it difficult to make 'delay in' modification?
A great synthesizer. It's a hybrid of digital/analog! Analog filters! I bought one about 2 weeks ago and dove pretty deep in it. You can get a lot of classic sounds out of it for sure!
I own a DW myself and it was my first synthesizer in the 80's. Sold it many years ago and got it back to my 40 birthday from my friends. Big surprise! I have build in the Musitronics expansion, which makes the DW duo phonic, s/h for LFO, layer sounds, keyboard split and more.
Regarding the mod of your DW: could you post me a email from the previous owner? He could give us DW lovers a short tut about the mods, maybe.
@Tischhupe I got a new Poly 800 on my 13th birthday. I remember wanting a DW-8000 soooo bad after that, but some older musician friends of my parents said that new fangled "sampler/sampling" (whatever that meant?) synths were the future. So I got a Roland D-10. (which I eventually traded for a Roland Alpha Juno-1) BTW, I also bought a SEIL DK-80 (With SEIL ?-? drum machine). I had 2 DK-80's, brand new. They didn't work! Had to return them. No cash exchange, ended up with a Casio something.
No. The DW 8000 is still essentially a "synth". I should have been more clear. By sample based I meant like, The Roland D-10, 20, 50, Korg DSS 1, M1, etc. Keyboards with "sampled" acoustic instruments/drums, etc. A musician friend of my mom's said that was the way to go. About SEIL! Grrr! Bought a NEW DK-80, took it home, plugged it in. Nothing. Took it back, got another, worked for like. 5 minutes. Got it from a little music shop. The guy wouldn't give $ refund & I got a Casio ?-?
What I like about it is that it can do a bit of everything. It also has some eerie as hell sound capabilities that are far more sophisticated than the Poly 800, Alpha Juno or earlier junos. If it was as fat sounding as a Juno it would be very close to a Jupiter in my opinion.
AWESOME demo! Thanks for uploading. As far as I know the DW misses some typical synth features (such as sync, ring modulation, cross modulation) but it's still a wonderful sounding machine.
I used to own one of these. With enough tweaking, I was able to make it sound close to either a Hammond, a Farfisa, or a Hohner Pianet. Unfortunately I had to sell it because I needed the money. I miss it though.
When I worked at Thoroughbred Music in the late 80's, I hated these keyboards. I detested the look, and the sound didn't appeal to me. Listening to it now, 20+ years later, it sounds much better than it did to me then. Good job, AnalogAudio1 !
The first chord you played (at the start of the clip), reminds me the start of the song When your heart is weak by Cock Robin (1985), I mean similar patch . Nice demo!

A very nice demo! I´m thinking of getting theexpansion-mod too for my DW-8000.
Is it worth the money?
Next to the Roland Juno-106, this is my favorite instrument and even though we´ve been a team since 1993, It still manages to satisfy me. ;-)
Keep up the good work!

@gjc82071 Funny, because the DW was sample based.
OK, it were re-sampled waveforms. But non the less various spectre which other synths doesn't provide then. It was the perfect companion for the DX7.
Siel had always a not so good reputation in terms of quality.

hi! I bought a DW 8000 two days ago (for
$ 250) and I noticed that someone has installed behind
an additional output jack..I saw in the clip you were fumbling in the same position
OK, but what is?
louxien 2 years ago
@louxien it is a knob for the volume before the delay. It is also for volume control of the external inputs, which are installed.
AnalogAudio1 2 years ago
Ok, thank you. DW 8000 is a nice synth, specially in monophonic mode with all eight voices stacked... 16 oscillators for a solid bass sound.
louxien 2 years ago
Hello, could you please explain what are the mods on your synth ? sometimes I saw you twicking added pots..
Is it possible to send me in sysex or just the value labels for the last patch ?( the moog bass .. )
alphajuno1 2 years ago
@alphajuno1 HI, on the back side there are signal inputs - for processing external sounds with the delay.
I sold this synth - I don't have patches anymore. To programm this bass is quite easy.
AnalogAudio1 2 years ago
Ok, thank you.
Do you remember how you did mod that cool synth ?
alphajuno1 2 years ago
@alphajuno1 I did not mod it. The previous owner modded it.
