my grand mother LOVED Mannix boy i'm tellin you. She never missed a show. I don't know why but she was crazy about the show. I love dit too as a little kid.
Mike Connors has a smile that is really not acting. He smiles like that even in his interviews. BTW Joe Mannix is actually Joseph Mannix. Only once in the series I heard him being called that, by another actor who played his Dad!
This theme should haved joined those other masterpieces of the 60s like route 66 etc. Altogether to cool for the 70s.Good arrangement especially the brass.
Well here I go, but I think Hawaii 5-O sort of, kind of, was modeled after Mannix. McGarrett even looks a lot like Joe. Hawaii 5-O was Mannix with the island glitz as veritable distractions but as I say this, they were both outstanding, stand-alone programs I would never be disappointed were I stuck with only one or the other to watch.
Agreeing with all who say this was a terrific theme and that piano part really made it pop!
hi funney one there bout peggy HA! i think mike was brother of the late chuck connors who presented thrill seekers way back then anyone know? also chuck starred in murder she wrote as seen him on episode recently, was wondering was the pro recent.. and in walks chuck, . .dead for 30 plus years rip. that answered my question. pb manchester.
Beautiful quality! I watched this as a pre-teen and wondered why Peggy stayed working for Maninx. She would be kidnapped or slapped around by some bad guy- at least ask for a raise! LOL!
Lalo Schifrin was to the 70s what Bernstein, Newman and company with a little Basie and Quincy Jones thrown in for good measure. Never heard a Schifrin swinger I failed to enjoy, a master thats for sure. Oh and by the way Mannix wasn,t bad either.
good old mannix hey hey was actually a brother of chuck conners who presented Thrillseekers in the 70`s sadly neither no longer with us peggy was his secetary mannix died of poisioning at the end of the series not real OH CANT YOU STILL HEAR THAT RING OF HIS PHONE IN HIS OFFICE patrick Burke manchester.
I think that he had one of the first car phones I can remember seeing in a TV series. Had a handset just like a house phone if I remember right. Wonder if his calls ever got dropped?
Over the years I have found myself humming this theme out of absolutely nowhere which tells me it is and always has been a classic. Lalo Schifrin sometimes reminds me of Vince Guaraldi arrangements, wonderful memories of a fantastic musical era!
write and call paramount. tell them to release all the rest of the seasons from 4 til the end. i called and they had no info. if enough call and write, maybe they will release them. ask for the home video dept. also write and call tv land. tell them to put mannix back on prime time. there is no reason why the best tv show ever made is not seen anymore.
@cheesecakepie1 If CBS can come back with a new "Hawaii Five-O" this fall, a new rendition of "Mannix" may not be that far off, or even "Mission Impossible."
I and my friends, as children, knew this theme song by Lalo Schiffrin, written in jazz waltz, was going to be a classic. There was a time when bar bands in Asia would actually attempt this. Thanks for the glimpse of the past.
It's such a shame that most TV shows barely even have theme songs anymore. The networks take every second they can get to fill with commercials! It's just as well, I guess; no one today could create anything as rousing as this music is anyway.
You need to hear the long version of this song by Lalo Schiffrin. It is on some compilation CD's of TV themes. It goes through various instruments having their instrumental breaks
I have that on a LP !!!!! Some great music in some of those TV shows. Another good one is "Bumpers Theme" from the White Knight" (?) I also loved the use of bassoons in the opening of McHales Navy but the tune didn't go too far
@mikefastener My parents and aunt and uncle played cards on Saturday nights when this was on. I was a kid and my brother and I fell asleep to this show!
By the way was The Ghost and Mr. Muir the gay version of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir????? :-)
@IstvanN1961 Thanks for correcting me on, "The Ghost and MR Muir"....;however, at Seinfeld said, "not that there is anything wrong with that!".....lolol
Good memories--childhood memories--where has that time gone?
@vibraharp226 I'm not a musician myself (or certainly not much of one,) but I've always loved a waltz beat. I think it is because the cantor of my full maiden name was (unintentionally) a waltz. I like finding waltz beats in modern music, even pop & rock. But I would have never guessed this one to be a waltz, maybe because it is, as you say, a jazz waltz? Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I like jazz, when I hear it, & will now be listening for others that are simular.
i remember when i used to figure skate I skated to this theme song and my mom picked it out of some old scrap music we had and I never knew what it was. thanx for posting
The role of Peggy Fair whom was played by Gail Fisher was originally meant for Nichelle Nicholes from "Star Trek"; Gene Roddenberry wouldn't release her from her contract.
I remember Diahann Carroll was considered the first black woman to star in a non-stereotypical role in a TV show called "Julia" where she played a nurse.
fabulous theme---perhaps the best all around one---no going back after they did this one. I especially love the bridge--class act.
