With all due respects to Mr. Pirillo, I fail too see the logical connection between having ACCESS to a lot of information and being SMARTER. Even a stupid person, today, has access to a lot of information. Does that mean he is as smart as the 'smarter' person? I don't think so. This is where we are all going wrong. It's what you DO with that information and how successfully, as compared to another person, who has access to the same information, that makes you 'smarter' or 'dumber'.
hell no they sit on their asses too much want everything now without really working for it. example. brintney spears 7 million hits. but something important 205 hits. Man on the street ask simple questions about government. Most dont know.
i think kids are smarter back then because they wouldnt google stuff they would ask people research in books but yeah then they were smarter because they could study know a days we just sit at home.
What he means by they are smarter. I'm a teenager, I'm 15. I'm very smart compared to most people at my school. I had the educaiton we recieve shit. I'm not the best at ever subject. I like IT. I find the IT education in the UK shit. My IT teacher learns things from me most lessons, mainly about things like Linux or new technological and computer advances. The IT techs at my school that run the network took 1.5 years to block command prompt after me and some people abused it to shut....
Well i guess you can consider me a kid..but anyway..i have to disagree kids are so fucking stupid god sometimes i want to punch some people in the face
That calculator operated on punch-cards, right? ;)
Anyway; having more immediate access to knowledge doesn't make somebody immediately intelligent in my opinion. It's the retention and application of said knowledge that demonstrates intelligence.
I don't think kids necessarily smarter today, but they are definitely much more knowledgable and less ignorant, thanks to the technologies that allow for much faster researching. Intelligence is more about how deep and fast we can process knowledge.
Kids are smarter today. We have easy access to information on almost anything. Children have an easier time remembering new things. While they do know more facts than kids from the previous generation, I've noticed that many of today's kids lack skills such as spelling and common sense. Sometimes I wonder, is it worth the trade?
Smarter because they know how to use the technology? Ummm its not that bloody hard, it was much harder in the crude early to mid 80's with no GUI and no internet to hold your fucking hand.
@blade004 not smarter because they know "how to use technology" but because they have technology that allows access to a lot more information much more quickly compared to kids years ago.
@OckhamsxRazor I am quoting what that father of Chris said as in "how to use technology" and answering accordingly. but quick access or a lot of access doesn't necessarily mean more intelligent, many kids due to Internet access are gamers, they lose interest in other more intellectual engaging topics and reading because they want the quick fix, the visual stimuli, the graphics, thus in turn their creative imagination is also stifled.
@OckhamsxRazor Also, just because it's "there" it doesn't mean it will be learned!. If I were put a bunch of young male teen or kids approaching puberty into a library which was half full of highly educational material and the other half was Hustler, Playboy, Playstation Magazine..etc, which do you think they would gravitate more towards?. The content is only as great as the person looking for it ;)
@OckhamsxRazor There is also a lot of back tracking of sources in many instances where you "get" what you may consider is educational material but can be later revealed as inaccurate. There is a lot of "shit" out there, not all of it is going to make you smarter, it could make you look like an absolute idiot.
kids nowadays aren't smarter its just that they learn easily and technology has changed which make kids seem smarter but you have to remember their are still learning and so they are more likely to remember things
They are not smarter. Just because they can access info quicker does not make them more sound. One big problem they have is lack of discipline and it shows up in the family life, financially, socially, well, just everywhere. Has anyone mentioned obesity? They are not out-living their parents. College is a joke. They may have more access to knowledge but that does not make them wiser.
Just a reminder: For Chris's Dad. You can get Microsoft Excel for the Mac. I have been using it for a while now and I think it is great on Mac OS X. The user interface is a tinywiny different compared to the Windows version.
The availability of information, and tools presented to children, and teens does not necessarily equate to the usage of such information. For example, rather then searching for scientific proofs via the internet, most kids/teenagers would rather research poor quality music, fashion, celebrity news, funny videos, and talk with their peers using Facebook/Google+. I would not call these whelps smarter by any stretch. It's like using a screwdriver as a hammer.
The next time you can't do TLDR Chris get your dad to do it. Watching TLDR when you couldn't do it was worse than getting root canal treatment in the dentist - your dad would have been brilliant
Kids aren't smarter today just b/c they know how to use tech. they are actually more clueless and less motivated. They are certainly more open-minded, more perceptible and have more access to information BUT they are not as intelligent as the older generation not even close.
Kids hasn't gotten smarter, the way they have access to info has gotten easier but they are not smarter for that reason because many don't remember the info they read because its right there if they need it again.
@phoenix1980dk I agree, if you think about it, older people had to go and look for the information such as going to a library or visiting someone that might know. Therefore, they learned about as much as we did but they worked a lot harder to learn it so it stayed in their brains. I guess you could say we're lazier too.
I don't call a person that knows a zillion and one facts "smart". (because I knew about that much, people told me I was smart and I believed them)
Smart people have critical thinking skills.
I wouldn't say people from the future smarter than people today just because they can build a warp drive from a kit from the internet with instructions in English and Martian.
Chris your Dad is so right. Kids are smarter these days but they dont know how to communicate to there parents. Pretty much the internet is now raising the youth.
Honestly whenever i listen to this man speaking it reminds me of my grandpa... Thanks a lot Chris and above all thank you mr Joe Pirillo for your time :)
This is so true :c When I grew up my crappy phone was cool, now all the kids have an Iphone and have so much access to information its SO hard to deal with kids these days and mainly I think its not the kids fault more the parents who just give whatever they ask for :s BUT yes. Technology has made kids much more smarter then in centuries before all this existed.
Mr.Pirillo 1. What brach did you serve in? 2. Where have you been stationed? 3.when did you serve? 4. How much has the military changed since you left?
Question for Mr. Pirillo : When you were growing up, was there any thing like a board game or a book that brought your family together that wouldn't do the same with families today because of technology?
for the acc question i would like to add is "things like calculators not necessarily made humans dumber instead proficient and so that they can expand their abilities beyond addition, mult etc, technology eliminates certain limits and speedy workflow is def smarter"
sometimes i also think kids are smarter these days, but that's indeed, as your dad says, because they have easy access to information. So actually they are equally smart as, let's say.. when your dad was a kid, but they just know more. and knowing things because you've read them doesn't make you smarter then someone who didn't read them
It is so much easier to gain access to information these days but i don't think this generation of children are smarter than children in the old days because the devices hold the info, like phone numbers and directions to a location. Back then people had to learn numbers but and remember turn by turn directions in their head or write them down but most likely both and with Math people don't use their minds to calculate that equation, instead they use a device which isn't that great for the mind.
I seems like kids were supposed to be smarter today but they're not.Kids don't want to absorb useful information on the internet, instead they choose to communicate with each other which can be done face to face or over the phone, play computer games instead of reading the book and watch too much crap on youtube.lol.Edit:Chris,your videos are educating,so you don't fall in that category of youtube:)
kids are not smarter, they take all tek for granted and see no benefit whatsoever in learning anything that there may be an app for, or a simple google search can tell them an answer, and they believe almost anything they see on the net or tv with almost no ability to decide if its bs. the human race is doomed
@DrOrphious79 that is where your are wrong. You are placing a HUGE stereotype on kids. Not ALL kids believe everything they see and some do actually want to learn.
