What's mysterious to me is why Wickham had "business" which required him to hide away in an inn for several days. You'd think he'd just ravish Lydia and book it, but no, he spends most his time writing and drinking.
As for Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Bennet: I wonder what exactly Mrs. B puts in her smelling salts, because those two must be sniffing something in order to create such huge memory loss and d-e-l-u-s-i-o-n-s.
@Sirena101 It's clear in the book. Mostly he was in London to hide from his creditors; he had a lot of gambling debts in the regiment. He never intended to marry Lydia, but as she pretty much foisted herself on him he wasn't the kind of guy to turn her away.
@Sirena101 They had to give him *something* to do in this scene, didn't they? Likely, though, he'd be looking for another situation and writing to people who he thought would help him. Not even Wickham would have burned all his bridges behind him: in this case he'd already had some help from Mrs Younge.
I actually like Mrs. Bennet in a comical way. I mean she is sooo stupid she doesn't know anything which she cannot help if she was born that way...... so I like her stupidness, I guess.
I love Alison Steadman as Mrs. Benette. She makes you want to strangle her as delivers each line with the character's overeaction, lack of subtlely and lack of congnition . Great acting !
Here comes another chatterbox/gossip chicken. Mrs. Bennett u are to be blamed! You should have kept more reign on your daughter. First of all you should not have let your daugher flaunting off to Brighton on her own. It doesn't matter if the man has money or not.
But neither Mr or Mrs Bennett were to blame! It was normal for girls to be taken into society by friends of the family. With Her father's permission, Lydia was in the care of the colonel & his wife, a sensible person of breeding, & good standing in society, & although the colonel reported that he thought Lydia liked Whickam , there was no indication of anything more between them, & they were as shocked as everyone else. Hardly surprising if they were intending to elope
What does Mrs. Philips mean when she says 'In which more things were broken beyond repair than heads and furniture'? What else was broken? It sounds so significant.
@cricketsong4045 You got the PG explanation, for hearts can mend in time. Wickham would not be sated with simple seductions. He needed to deflower a few virgins while in Meryton. As Mary said,"that loss of virtue in a female is irretrievable -- that one false step involves her in endless ruin.." And it was said of Wickham, "He was declared to be in debt to every tradesman in the place, and his intrigues, all honoured with the title of seduction, had been extended into every tradesman's family."
@everyoneisweird plus I think it's in part also as revenge against Elizabeth for finding out his true character from Mr Darcy and hinting that she likes Darcy better now against Wickham's words of how horrible Darcy treated him.
Now he wants to be parent instead of a spoiler. I also like liked how Elizabeth did not rub it it by saying I told you so and I like how he admitted that he was wrong. He learned.
i think if lydia had not disgraced herself and had been able to continue to grow with her family she would have definitely matured and probably even become a lady...but all chances of that are killed once she marries wickham, it just pretty much sets her in her childish ways for the rest of her life to be married so young and in such a way that no one wants to deal with her
even wickham is annoyed and fed up with lydia's manners right now xD (what i cam fully understand) ... he cannot be blamed better for his past than with a marriage to that girl!
@Starlightslover yes i think i remember that even in the end of the book it was mentioned that they soon became quite unhappy with each other- shit happens :D
@rasta13820 Fair game? This isn't today where casual sex isn't necessarily a taboo. That family had made it clear to the children of the truth, and you can't force a child to do what you tell them.
That girl was just stupid. Her purpose at Longbourne was not to get married. She made her own grave, not her parents, so I have to disagree.
@Coganboy Lydia was regarded by her society as eligible for marriage. Having casual sex with Wickham outside of marriage was wrong for both of them and could have ruined the reputation of her family. Wickham's action was despicable but don't call him a pedophile if society views her as nubile. That's hypocrisy-the true fault was her parents who thought she was mature enough to be 'out' and be on her own away from their supervision. They were the ones that encouraged and provided permission to go
@rasta13820 I'm not condemning him as a pedophile. I'm condemning him as a "player" who uses women as sex instruments to get what he wants. Now he'll have to pay by staying with one woman for life. I hope the sex was good, because it's all he's getting.
The parents did make a mistake, but to blame that girl's stupidity on them is not the way to go.
@Coganboy Don't worry about Wickham, he'll get plenty. My initial remarks were to Indzzgracey, who did use the term 'pedophile'. As to the assignment of blame both views are in the story-Mr Collins holds your argument while Lizzy has expressed mine: “Her father, contented with laughing at them, would never exert himself to restrain the wild giddiness of his youngest daughters; and her mother, with manners so far from right herself, was entirely insensible of the evil." (con't)
@Coganboy "But she had never felt so strongly as now the disadvantages which must attend the children of so unsuitable a marriage, nor ever been so fully aware of the evils arising from so ill-judged a direction of talents; talents which rightly used, might at least have preserved the respectability of his daughters, even if incapable of enlarging the mind of his wife.”
"The mischief of neglect and mistaken indulgence towards such a girl. -- Oh! how acutely did she now feel it.”
Mrs bennett reminds me of a big baby. Literally. She moans and cries and even has a bonnet that makes her look childish! She makes u wanna slap her and say " shutchyo mouth foo!" xD

@flormat30 You are right He is Fitzwilliam Darcy. His Cousin's surname is Fitzwilliam, & as it often was, a maiden name was handed down as a Christian name, and as such a woman could keep her maiden name in her OWN offspring. It must have been that Colonel Fitzwilliam's father and Darcy's mother were brother and sister, and so to keep Darcy's mother's maiden name in HER family, she named her son Fitzwilliam. Oh, come on! Not everybody can be high and honorable and intelligent and good and sensible and reasonable and serious and......The thing would be ghastly boring otherwise. :D
I thought so too in the beginning of the series, but i read somewhere that jane was supposed to have been based off of a greek beauty. And if that is so she does resemble the greek statues of aphrodite; and somehow she grew on me, and now i think she is quite pretty.
@aoisiren: I saw this too - I tried to see how people of that time period (and of course now, I suppose) would find her really attractive - I guess in comparison to Elizabeth - and I noticed she had this gentler, Greek-like beauty.
Don't know who to pity more...Lydia, or Mr. Wickham XD Though I despise his character, I feel it's quite ironic and yet satisfying that he should end up with her haha XD
Watch him drink himself to a drunken stupor due his choosing the wrong person to seduce haha XD In the end, justice is served~
This is a bit inaccurate, isn't it? I like that the longer version allows for a wider interpretation, but Mr. Bennet did no such thing to his daughters in the book. He had a thorough understanding of each of their natures.
Does anybody find it strange that Mrs. Bennet and her sister-in-law are so distraught with wickham's behavior however the moment he is found he should be forced to marry lydia?! I Know she is a spoiled young lady but is she so undiserving as to deserve the "horrible" Mr. Wickham? strange that is the only thing that has ever puzzeled me about Austen.
Do you know youtube comments sect; can have some most obscene remarks. Yet for this drama there is so much elegance too, in the manner, viewers express themselves. It is so refreshing. Thank you so much for uploading the superb production. GBU
I love the look Wickam has at 2:23, like "omg, what did I do this, why the siiliest creature that was to be born, WHY ME ????" And Im like laughing so hard, like, man, u kinda deserve it....
Mr. Bennet, now you see? now you understand Elizabeth's point, of what will be the result of Lydia's unguarded manner? lol XD

Oh, come on! Not everybody can be high and honorable and intelligent and good and sensible and reasonable and serious and......The thing would be ghastly boring otherwise. :D

i dont think jane is pretty .. shes very ugly .. in 2005 movie.. jane looks wayy better
amira4ever1 2 years ago
@amira4ever1 I think Jane's gorgeous! A gentle type of pretty.
raquelborn 2 years ago 10
I thought so too in the beginning of the series, but i read somewhere that jane was supposed to have been based off of a greek beauty. And if that is so she does resemble the greek statues of aphrodite; and somehow she grew on me, and now i think she is quite pretty.
aoisiren 2 years ago 5
@aoisiren: I saw this too - I tried to see how people of that time period (and of course now, I suppose) would find her really attractive - I guess in comparison to Elizabeth - and I noticed she had this gentler, Greek-like beauty.
Totally couldn't have said it better. :D
thehushkat 2 years ago 8
OMGsh! yes!
I always thought she looked like a greek statue!

@ amira4ever1 if you had not bothered to look, this Jane is gorgeous. She has a very unique, natural beauty.

I can't believe that lydia has no sense of etiquette for the time period. what a pain in the ass.

When Darcy sees Mrs. Younge I swear he looks as though he is going to assault her.

Don't know who to pity more...Lydia, or Mr. Wickham XD Though I despise his character, I feel it's quite ironic and yet satisfying that he should end up with her haha XD
Watch him drink himself to a drunken stupor due his choosing the wrong person to seduce haha XD In the end, justice is served~
ahhh i love this P&P rendition <3

I wish I could run my fingers through Wickham's purdeh hair...Haha. And the look on his face is like "Oh DO shut up." Lol.
Mr. Darcy=SECRET AGENT MAN

For someone who is about to faint, Mrs Bennet seems surprisingly energetic.
yinstube 2 years ago 18
This is a bit inaccurate, isn't it? I like that the longer version allows for a wider interpretation, but Mr. Bennet did no such thing to his daughters in the book. He had a thorough understanding of each of their natures.

the tart and the twat. lydia and wickham deserve one another! good thing mr bennet is adamant on their marriage.
hunnybunch1981 2 years ago 8
Does anybody find it strange that Mrs. Bennet and her sister-in-law are so distraught with wickham's behavior however the moment he is found he should be forced to marry lydia?! I Know she is a spoiled young lady but is she so undiserving as to deserve the "horrible" Mr. Wickham? strange that is the only thing that has ever puzzeled me about Austen.
Flutterfly5000 2 years ago
They want Mr. Wickham to marry Lydia because that is the only way to save her reputation.

When Mrs.Bennett sniffs her smelling salts at 3:04 I nearly died laughing. She is the epitome of drama.

Do you know youtube comments sect; can have some most obscene remarks. Yet for this drama there is so much elegance too, in the manner, viewers express themselves. It is so refreshing. Thank you so much for uploading the superb production. GBU

Bravo! Finally Mr Bennett raises his voice. I'm gonna raise my glass to that. High time.
But poor Kitty has to bear the brunt of it.
