In the USA you're in your legal right to use lethal force if you are in your own home and you feel your life is threatened. I'm not saying I would shoot if someone for carrying a TV out of my garage, though some might, but what are you supposed to do if a violent person is in your living space and they go for their belt (possibly going for a weapon) or come toward you in a menacing way? Must you stop and ask politely for an explanation before you act?

Yeah, for a law to be effective, the enforcement and detection has to be good. I like our situation better because it's easier to do stop and search to detect knife carriers than gun carriers. But we need to do much much better. As for a robber in your house, the law is very clear, you're fully entitled to defend yourself, but you can't gouge his eyes out and hold his head over a gas fire. There is a limit called REASONABLE FORCE.

They picked up a few of my things but as they were leaving when they saw the automatic outside light go on they panicked and dropped everything and ran. They clearly didn't want to hurt anybody and were most probably poorer frustrated kids. Now look they didn't deserve to be killed or disfigured for life. They have families too and a repremand and proportionate punishment is appropriate.

Crime is caused by ignorance, and we need to eliminate that if we want to eliminate crime. This is possible, through the schools, and employing people to talk daily to the convicted prisoners about their crimes and about the right way to live with others. I don't believe in the "kill/disfigure a few" approach. Proportionate punishments only are justifiable if necessary. I believe in a thing called universal human rights. And attitude-changing communications, which would lead to perfect results.
I want to be clear: good communications must be pursued in all cases, even if strength is used. They are not, never have been, and never will be mutually exclusive actions.

Stats don't tell you why things happen, for example in the UK the gap between rich and poor is wider than ever, and divisions and hatreds in society have been allowed to fester. Guns won't solve that but exacerbate it. I support getting knives and deadly weapons off the street; a lot easier than guns. I want prisoner reform councillors talking to prisoners every day about their crimes. I want primary and secondary school classes devoted to promoting a sense of oneness and compassion in society.

Yes I believe both exist but yes I believe both can be solved with the right counselling while they are in prison or otherwise also. Different approaches are required for each. It won't always be easy and it depends on how thoroughly correctly the job is done. I also support CCTV and widespread police presence to protect people.

The other stat is that the UK murder rate (other weapons or no) is still 1/3 of the US murder rate per capita, because of things like weapons bans. And our police are extremely polite, are usually not armed, and don't even have tazers (they have access to armed officers if needed). You already have the can of worms open over there so the best you can do at this moment is only legally allow their use to be justified against an armed aggressor, and not allow their use in all other circumstances.

The Amish here in north America have an closed commune culture. Of course God and religion is their absolute but if you put aside the odd traditions their system is kind of cool. They literally bear one another's burdens in almost every way. They pay taxes but other than that they're entirely self sufficient.

The militia that fought the American revolution were ordinary citizens, farmers mainly, exercising their right as free Englishmen to defend themselves from invading forces (ironically England). As per the (then) English Bill of Rights individual protestants had been given the freedom to self defense but the English government had sovereignty over their bill of rights so was it unlawful or not? In the USA you're in your legal right to use lethal force if you are in your own home and you feel your life is threatened. I'm not saying I would shoot if someone for carrying a TV out of my garage, though some might, but what are you supposed to do if a violent person is in your living space and they go for their belt (possibly going for a weapon) or come toward you in a menacing way? UK has no guns, ok, but when knife crime rose they banned knives and swords too. Now people use bats and such, what will you ban next, cricket? Yeah, for a law to be effective, the enforcement and detection has to be good. I like our situation better because it's easier to do stop and search to detect knife carriers than gun carriers. But we need to do much much better. As for a robber in your house, the law is very clear, you're fully entitled to defend yourself, but you can't gouge his eyes out and hold his head over a gas fire. There is a limit called REASONABLE FORCE.

StinkFingerr, I had someone break in to my house when I was younger, while I and my parents were asleep. They picked up a few of my things but as they were leaving when they saw the automatic outside light go on they panicked and dropped everything and ran. They clearly didn't want to hurt anybody and were most probably poorer frustrated kids. Now look they didn't deserve to be killed or disfigured for life. They have families too and a repremand and proportionate punishment is appropriate.

Crime is caused by ignorance, and we need to eliminate that if we want to eliminate crime. This is possible, through the schools, and employing people to talk daily to the convicted prisoners about their crimes and about the right way to live with others. I don't believe in the "kill/disfigure a few" approach. Proportionate punishments only are justifiable if necessary. I believe in a thing called universal human rights. And attitude-changing communications, which would lead to perfect results.

Stats don't tell you why things happen, for example in the UK the gap between rich and poor is wider than ever, and divisions and hatreds in society have been allowed to fester. Guns won't solve that but exacerbate it. I support getting knives and deadly weapons off the street; a lot easier than guns. I want prisoner reform councillors talking to prisoners every day about their crimes. I want primary and secondary school classes devoted to promoting a sense of oneness and compassion in society.

Yes I believe both exist but yes I believe both can be solved with the right counselling while they are in prison or otherwise also. Different approaches are required for each. It won't always be easy and it depends on how thoroughly correctly the job is done. I also support CCTV and widespread police presence to protect people.

The other stat is that the UK murder rate (other weapons or no) is still 1/3 of the US murder rate per capita, because of things like weapons bans. And our police are extremely polite, are usually not armed, and don't even have tazers (they have access to armed officers if needed). You already have the can of worms open over there so the best you can do at this moment is only legally allow their use to be justified against an armed aggressor, and not allow their use in all other circumstances.

It's a matter of interpretation. The militia that fought the American revolution were ordinary citizens, farmers mainly, exercising their right as free Englishmen to defend themselves from invading forces (ironically England). As per the (then) English Bill of Rights individual protestants had been given the freedom to self defense but the English government had sovereignty over their bill of rights so was it unlawful or not? The crown thought so and deemed it treason, the colonists disagreed.
