I like the comping exercise where you play the swing pattern (and hi hat on 2 & 4), but only play the snare on the 1, then the &. I usually leave a measure of just the ride and hi-hat pattern as a reminder of the temp. This can be done the same way with the bass drum. Then you can line up the snare hits with the bass. Finally, just pick what notes the snare will play, and which the bass will play in the measure(s). HAVE FUN!
Just a brilliant identification , analysis , diagnosis , and antidote to what is probably a musicians biggest barrier .... the dreaded musical plateau`s ... Peter is one of the best drummers on the planet but he is just as good at teaching as he is playing .... a genius , no doubt about it .
This is indeed where things 'begin to get fun'. Years of practice on comping exercises at all levels and all it takes is this simple idea to make it suddenly come alive and swing!
This is now a regular part if my practice routine.
Peter, You are indeed a MASTER player and a MASTER Teacher! Simplicity is the core ofl greatness! Excellent one bass drum note...then one note snare drum beat eliminates so much of the guess work for beginners and intermediate players!
@jonathanleviapple Yeah it's a Zildjan K Constantinople 22" Meduim Ride. I've got the same one, it's a fantastic jazz cymbal. If you need a secondary ride you should get his Left Side Ride too I love it, great for time during a band members solo.
the stick definition on that ride is insane

Great stuff!
On thing--the rules and variations don't seem to be on the lessonroom website. Will they be posted there?
