You can also tell whether or not the phone has a camcorder installed (not the free app actually part of te camera app) if it just has a camera with no zoom its a 3G if it has a camera with zoom and a camcorder its a 3GS hope this helps everyone a litgle bit more

@ian559fresno @Ocliptos - everyone needs to be careful. A refurbisher shop where I live is selling refurbished iPhone 3G models, with the replacement iPhone 3GS black or white back. They also sell a few modded iPhones, a few 3G models labeled as 3GS's, and the metal-back and chrome back iPhone 3G/S's there are pretty cool.
