Don't see why this is a problem. It's just Google trying to make search results more relevant to you. I guarantee you in those two examples of two friends with different search results, if one had scrolled down or gone to different pages they would have eventually seen the same things as the other friend. Google isn't hiding anything from you.
Opening up to more content starts with opening up your perspective right now and use what is already out there as alternatives.
Bing, Lycos, Altavista, Yahoo and much better than facebook: Path.
Instead of demanding change from FREE services, how about switching to their competitors to send a signal. People become so self-entitled when they're online, it's a bit hypocritical tbh.
I gave a speech recently at a TED sponsored event. It is a great "ThinkTank." I wonder why Google and Facebook are trying to edit my content? I don't like it. I like to be challenged byt seeing what I don't necessarily want to see. How about they stop filtering us?
3:12 should learn to search for stuff thats more spesific. "Egypt" is pretty general. Do something like "Waterparks in Egypt" and i bet they get similar results
I would suggest that we all live in a filter bubble, regardless of the Internet. We already choose what we want to hear, see, believe in. . . It’s what we used to call your Worldview. e.g. what Newspapers do you like/not like? How often do read the ones you don’t like? The only thing I would like to see change is the option to do an ‘unfiltered’ Google search. . .
celeb cutlure is now rife too, we even have an entertainment segment to the mainstream news now here in Oz.. on and on about the antics of these vacuous celebrity 'gods' it's incredible, the way people are distracted by the lives of people they dont know and will never meet - stalking and voyeurism gone mad.
ive noticed google is really crap now, you do a search and it comes up with very random things. far from your original search.. everything has consolidated recently - my yahoo looks the same as google and now looks the same as utube, big black/grey tabs everywhere.. the net is nearly over so make the most of it while it lasts.. books are a far better source of info anyway, while they still last that is..
annd your point is? There other services which are also free called libraries that you can go to and look up anything you want in things called books. Why this guy is whining about something that is FREE is beyond me.
I guess he would rather complain than
A: learn how to set his preferences properly ; and
B: learn how to do proper searches that don't rely on the filters to do your thinking for you.
I was thinking the same thing as a couple of comments on here, this 'funnelling' of information was probably intended to increase better marketing, make things easier for us to find according to our needs - how convenient if what we wanted to search for is right there next to us in an advert on Facebook? But as it's been said, this 'internet isolation' of us is merely an 'after-effect'.
It has been some time since I last saw this. Found it on TED when it was uploaded. It is an extremely important speach and I hope that we can make everyone see it this time.
Sorry, but I don't buy Eli Pariser's argument or tech explanation at all. There are plenty of ways to bypass "curated" search algorithms and find what you need online. This is so simplistic, even by TED standards.
why doesnt google just put a button that says "Customized search", when you click on it you get results based on YOU. That button changes caption to "General search" and when clicked, you get results based on what the whole world in general is looking for.
Maybe it could be a list instead of a button where you can choose different countrys or categories which gives you results based on what a country is looking for the most or what searches containing something relative to the category.
Fair enough.. He has a point.. But that is not what these sites (Google and Facebook) set out to do in the first place. They just try to tailor to our needs... he's merely talking about a bi product of these algorithms/ computer made gate keepers (as he calls them) . The name is misleading since they are not trying to hide this fact, it's something that happened becauce of it which is interesting by itself!
Pretty Scary that All our info is " PIPED " through Google, Twitter, Facebook, and a few other sites . And Corporations rushing to control them ... Jeez

@bloodaid because that would not trap people into going to the sites that give google money.

@firephoxx1 not true at all.
they could reset to default after every session.
people would love to be able to see whats going on in the search-world.
