There seems to be a popular conception that because religion and promoted moral codes are not based on science, that all religious beliefs actively discourage scientific advancement. One of my dad's friend's mom died about a year ago and somebody, during the emotion-hazed confusion that immediately follows a death, booked some local minister to come speak at the funeral. He went up there, said nothing about the woman that had just died, and tried to turn the funeral into an altar call because her death was "a reminder that we can only get to heaven through Jesus Christ and His salvation."
