@nettnimmeg The dude writes books and talks at conventions. How is he militant? Hes not threatening people with eternal suffering, hes trying to educate people!
no one can really argue that he's not pretentious, but @unripefrtuit has a point. he's not doing it for himself. he's doing it so that people a hundred years from now don't learn that he realized the "truth" on his deathbed.
you can almost feel dawkins' pretentious aura. hope he's making good use of that book sale money cause endlessly bitching about religion is one depressing way to go through life. no one knows what happens when you die. move on
@maxhand07 Can you say that a world full of religious fundamentalists would be better than a world full of nonreligious people? If you say yes, you would be someone who agrees with the notion that the Dark Ages would've been pretty cool to live in, like I've heard more often than should be said. If you say yes and agree with the notion that science is important, then you are stupid. If you say no, then you fundamentally agree with the premise you apparently don't fully understand.
@Ironeyes I like the "if you say yes or no you're wrong" setup lol. What you're arguing is strongly oversimplified. The dark ages analogy is taking reality to extreme and just shows that society foolishly stopped developing a thousand years ago. There seems to be a popular conception that because religion and promoted moral codes are not based on science, that all religious beliefs actively discourage scientific advancement. That jump just doesn't make sense to me in today's society
@maxhand07 Glad you liked it, haha. I'm aware that the analogy is silly, but I've still heard it several times from unwitting christians. The point that sealed the deal on the notion of anti-science, was the word fundamentalist - not merely christian. You're right, but a nice long jump starts with a few small steps.
And also, it's not depressing at all. As an agnostic, I thrive to understand the world around me - and I know that the possibilities are open in death. So does he.
@Ironeyes But all i was originally saying was that it would be depressing to me to go through life in today's world with dawkins' outlook on life. Being so sure about what happens after death without being sure at all. He just seems enslaved to his neverending quest that doesn't seem to have much of a point to me besides book sales
@maxhand07 Dawkins point is not book sales, his point is to help the human race progress by helping people to think critically and get rid of false beliefs. That is a noble cause.
@animecha look, I've been studying this stuff too long to argue. If you really care that much join the academia like the rest of us and handle it professionally. All I was saying is that if you look carefully at Darwin's life, he goes in and out of Christianity, and in doing so, you don't just one day stop believing in something cause you say so. Especially from a man who tests things before he rests on them. Just consider it a little deeper is all. No harm no foul.
@unripefruit well I would assume it's for those who would be living after his death. Why would he care? Because people valued him and his knowledge. A reason would be that he wouldn't want them to be given false information. To anyone for that matter.
Also he brought up that lies were told about a death-bed conversion of Darwin. He'd prevent this from happening again.
@unripefruit because, idiot, his reputation means something to someone. Just because nobody will care when you die doesn't mean it's like that for everyone
If he really believes he will cease to exist after he dies, why the F would he care what people think about him after the fact? What a sad, transparent man.
@unripefruit he cares about the future? He doesn't care what people think about him, he doesn't want to be hypocritized by the Church, because that would undermine everything he tries to teach. He teaches the truth, and he doesn't want it to be extinguished because some idiots go around spreading lies about his death. How is that sad and transparent?
@unripefruit Letting Christians think they win something when they really don't is a terrible idea. Every single one of them are going to say he had a death bed conversion to Christianity, and with this man being the complete opposite of that and as a well known being, Christianity will only grow stronger and ruin more of everything because people are stupid.
@unripefruit Well we will all cease to exist as we are. The only likely possibility of an afterlife would be some form of energy moving on, in which sense of self would be lost, in other words there is no "you".
I'm a Christ believer and I actually really like Richard Dawkins. I've seen him interviewing people who are part of a religious group who are really "Aggressive" to the point they say they would want to take over the world and convert people with force.
And the amount of "Christians" out there who claims the word of God when really they are just claiming their version of the Bible that they have reinterpreted, is an absolute mess.
@ELMahdi1993 odds are he'll die after a few days in the hospital, since he doesn't have any outstanding medical conditions. Most people don't die instantly.
@huxl3y If anything, that makes him more credible. He has experienced religion. He knows what happens in religion, and he knows that religion creates discrimination, violence, and wars.
@huxl3y Are you being serious? Everyone knows that he was raised in the faith, but after learning all he did about evolution and science he left religion. His wife remained a woman of faith while Darwin called himself an agnostic.
@huxl3y Actually a lot of atheists study the bible. It's one of the main things that drives them to atheism. There's a big difference between reading something and believing it's true.
@huxl3y He recieved his theology degree before discovering evolution and even at school speculated that life could arise through adaptation as God acting through laws of nature. It wasn't until he returned from his expeditions that he doubted the historicity of the bible and became agnostic.
The only genuine story of deathbed conversion was when the mathematician John von Neumann called a Catholic priest in to receive ceremonial rites as a Catholic out of nowhere. Although, at this point, his mind was probably far gone.
One of my dad's friend's mom died about a year ago and somebody, during the emotion-hazed confusion that immediately follows a death, booked some local minister to come speak at the funeral. He went up there, said nothing about the woman that had just died, and tried to turn the funeral into an altar call because her death was "a reminder that we can only get to heaven through Jesus Christ and His salvation." Needless to say the family, who were not terribly religious, were furious.
This guy is very very smart, Christianity and believing in the christian god are for people that need something to believe in because they were either raised that way or they want something to make them feel that everything will be better, well guess what? Welcome to fucking reality. People die, kill, rape, steal and much worse, there is nothing that will save you besides yourself, get off your ass and asking for help from an invisible man and take charge of your own life I used to be baptistBTW
@Gewath Dawkins is right about a lot of scientific aspects. But he is too arrogant and didn't accept that the reality is bigger, infinitely bigger than his little brain. How can he dare tell to the people what the ultimate basis of reality is... if he didn't know it? His problem is not scientific. The very problem are the his metaphysical statements.
@sarotran I think it is you who cannot accept reality. He dares and has the right to tell people about reality, he is a scientist and has the knowledge. We, as a species, are here because of evolution through natural selection. Individually we are here by chance because one made it and millions did not.l
@sarotran Correction: Dawkins invented a lot of scientific aspects. On what basis are you saying he 'stupid'?
Reality might be incomprehensible. Not one part of it has proven to be, though.
The scientific world largely accounts for us perceiving it. Hence it works as a model for metaphysics. It might not be correct, though there aren't really any competing hypothesis at the moment - meaning scientific realism is the scientific theory of metaphysics. Which is good enough for me.
The word "homosexual" is more appropriate and accurate than the word "gay".
A person does not need religion, hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important, qualitative differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption.
Homosexual activists, with (complete) support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims and martyrs; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
Let's just imagine, just for the sake of the argument, that Darwin did have a deathbed conversion experience... so what??? Why would it matter??? Why would it make any difference?. It doesn't change the evidence, does it?
I guess the reason that creationists keep coming up with this story is because they think it somehow constitutes a crushing blow to the theory of evolution.
I guarentee that we do have a Loving father in Heaven, and he left Enormous amounts of Evidence, Throughout the World, to prove that he exists and that the Bible recounts actual events that left testemonial remains behind for the World to see. " He who loveth not, knoweth not God for God is Love."
He says there is a story that Darwin had a death bed conversion which is a complete lie. Is he saying his whole statement is a lie? I think so. do you notice the arrogance and pride in his voice when he says the word lie. Do you know Darwin was actually a Christian, and his theory was not intended to shed God, he even says that there is weakness in his theory that it can be proved wrong, yet science teachers don't dwell on that as much as the anti-God sentiment, that his theory seems to embrace.
I feel sorry for Dawkins, the man obviously hates himself. His own delusion must be the saddest fact of his own personality. Dawkins should be pited more than criticised.
@the0fart0machine Atheists morons need to learn basic chemistry and homochirality,if u think life could evolve from cells.by some step by step process
"I feel sorry for Dawkins, the man obviously hates himself"
I never get you Christians... you often lack any real argument, so you LIE. The guy seems quite hapy in his life. But still...you don't really know him, so why make up this shit?
doesnt your magical jesus say NOT to bear false witness?
@terryooooooo "Godless atheism"... Is that as opposed to "Godly atheism"? Just wondering. Also, I can quite assure you that Dawkins isn't inbred, though the rest are subjective points, albeit very contentious ones.
@terryooooooo How do you know. All you have is a collection of desert scribblings, mistranslated. We have science. Last I checked, 42 isn't important.
83 Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat,- 84 And ye the while (sit) looking on,- 85 But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,- 86 Then why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,- 87 Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)? 88 Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to God,
89 (There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights. 90 And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand, 91 (For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand. 92 And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong, 93 For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water. 94 And burning in Hell-Fire. 95 Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly.
one who inventeth a lie against God, or saith, "I have received inspiration," when he hath received none, or (again) who saith, "I can reveal the like of what God hath revealed"? If thou couldst but see how the wicked (do fare) in the flood of confusion at death! - the angels stretch forth their hands, (saying),"yield up your souls: this day shall ye receive your reward,- a penalty of shame, for that ye used to tell lies against God, and scornfully to reject of His signs!"
And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death); they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): "Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire."
The first three verses of Genesis accurately express all known aspects of the Creation. Science expresses the Universe in terms of: Time, Space, Matter, and Energy. In Genesis chapter one we read, " In the beginning (time) God created the heavens (Space) and the Earth (Matter)...then God said, " Let there be light (Energy)."-- No other creation account agrees with the observable evidence-- (Genesis 1:1-3).
@majorI31, you're wrong about this 'all atheists convert at death' claim. I am an atheist and I nearly died just 6 days ago from a heart attack, I've just been discharged with 2 stents holding open an artery just like Clinton. They had nun going round the ward offering to hold prayers with patients. I declined without the slightest worry of any supernatural judgment. Even though I was terrified of the prospect of dying, I will not surrender to superstitious fears and magical mumbojumbo.
ok thankfully you didn't die,I'm very happy you survived ,but please you should consider that when you found yourself in this life you were not expecting to be here,so don't be too shocked if you find yourself in the next life, look up near death experiences on you tube
Dawkins is on a crusade to rid the world of religion, George Bernard Shaw one of these types a darling even today of the liberal progressives ,this is what Mr. Shaw said "their should be some kinda humane gas that we could use to rid the world of people who are not usefull"this is what makes these people so damned dangerous, they profess themselves to be so damned wise they think they are gods,Shaw has been dead for years bu the liberal left still love him
Death bed conversion is bullshit, All Christians that believe in death bed conversion are stupid. Christians saying "oh darwin had a death bed conversion!" If you think something along those lines, you are implying that your god is dumb and can easily be fooled. Anyone can live life religion free and then have a death bed conversion.

I don't trust Richard Dawkins, he is going to play the biggest trick in History, convert on his deathbed recorded to create a worldwide augument about it.
@saintpine "would you pray to a teddy bear if someones insists that it is a god ?" This is called a Strawmans argument.
"It is totaly ridiculars thinking that an atheist could have a death bed conversion" Ridiculous grammatical errors aside, it is not ridiculous to think that human beings have a change of heart under monumental circumstances.
"If he does, it is not a true belief, it is just a strategic try, anyway have nothing to loose." Yes, nothing to lose.
@ezdeezytube says " "would you pray to a teddy bear if someones insists that it is a god ?" This is called a Strawmans argument.
A belief is something that is not easily manipulated, to be able to believe that there is a god needs quite some mental work, it's no difference than me trying to convince you that a teddy bear is a god.
It’s absurd, you would laugh at the idea.
The reason why we don’t laugh at Christians is because of this strange social behavior of unquestionable respect.
""If he does, it is not a true belief, it is just a strategic try, anyway have nothing to loose." Yes, nothing to lose."
Sure the person wouldn't know what to do, but do you seriously think he BELIEVES in a god in that moment ?, saying so to make his family around his bed happy, or to please the arrogant priest.
Do you think that a god would not be able to see through this show ?

I can tell you why, because he isn't facing it at the moment Maher asks him. He knows he isn't about to die and he's baking in the limelight at the moment so he is free to say whatever he wants. After the interview he went to dinner with some friends and enjoyed a nice Bordeaux with his meal.
Atheism is a Religion, because you believe, you have faith there is no God without proof. When you die, it is only then you see the truth.
Go back to the definition of faith. Faith is believing in something without proof. Religion is a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith. Atheism is defined as the doctrine or belief that there is no God. Therefore Atheism is a religion.
That's not accurate. I don't "believe" that God doesn't exist, I know that its a silly idea to begin with. I can't even pretend to believe it, it's just not possible for me. It's not a matter of faith, so please don't equivocate it to believing in the supernatural. To believe in a malicious contradictory super-being requires a huge leap of faith when you have reasonable understanding of science, philosophy, theology, and history. It just does not work the other way, it's the lack of belief.
@Fashionificationful By that logic, then, I have faith that there is no such thing as leprechauns and fairies. I don't need proof that mythical creatures do not exist. There is simply no evidence that they do.
Not by any commonly known definition of the word. You can't just make up stuff like this.
"because you believe, you have faith there is no God without proof."
That is such stupid logic. All you did was twist the main argument against religion around. Since atheism is not proclaiming an invisible magical being, it's hardly the same.
All the stories of magical powers? You dont find that hard to swallow?
""definition of faith. Faith is believing in something without proof"
WE ARE ASKING FOR PROOF to your invisible magical religion. Instead of providing any or a rational argument, all you are doing is parroting what atheists tell believers. That's pretty much the "I know you are but what am I" comeback.
I don't need to provide you with "proof" that there is a God. The fact that I believe in a creator is my choice, just as your lack of belief in a deity is your choice. But make no mistake about it, you don't have proof either. You aren't "better" or more "intelligent" than I am because you don't believe in a God. I respect the fact that you have a right to believe what you want.. But don't kid yourself into thinking that you have proof there is no God.
"I don't need to provide you with "proof" that there is a God."
You need to be honest- YOU CAN'T. Don't pretend it's you saying you don't need to. If you wanted to...YOU CAN'T
"The fact that I believe in a creator is my choice, just as your lack of belief in a deity is your choice"
Existence is not dependent on belief. If you said "I CHOOSE not to believe the moon is real" and I said "I believe it's real" I could argue and win that one with proof.
"But don't kid yourself into thinking that you have proof there is no God."
With your "logic" (which is very canned/repeated Christian debate tactics btw) you "have no proof" Hindu gods aren't real. Or Goblins. Or Bigfoot. Burden of proof should fall on you or anyone making an outrageous claim involving magic like this.

So many things were "universally accepted" in the past, and have changed.
Do you accept instead that a superpowerful and complex something capable of knowing the future as well can popup from nothing or always existed ?
And is also capable of creating anything from nothing as well.

Just try to understand it, would you pray to a teddy bear if someones insists that it is a god ?
It is totaly ridiculars thinking that an atheist could have a death bed conversion.
If he does, it is not a true belief, it is just a strategic try, anyway have nothing to loose.
An unsure athiest on his deathbed cannot become a believer, at most a questioning agnostic.

"It is totaly ridiculars thinking that an atheist could have a death bed conversion" Ridiculous grammatical errors aside, it is not ridiculous to think that human beings have a change of heart under monumental circumstances.

A spiritual healer has no proof of an operation working.
You need no proof to believe in positive outcomes.
Hence, you believe the spiritual healer will deliver positive outcomes.
Outcome: you die of bloodletting induced anemia and the world's intellectual ratio increases.
shortyshock 1 year ago 94
That's not accurate. I don't "believe" that God doesn't exist, I know that its a silly idea to begin with. I can't even pretend to believe it, it's just not possible for me. It's not a matter of faith, so please don't equivocate it to believing in the supernatural. To believe in a malicious contradictory super-being requires a huge leap of faith when you have reasonable understanding of science, philosophy, theology, and history. It just does not work the other way, it's the lack of belief.
cornsnoggle 11 months ago
@Fashionificationful By that logic, then, I have faith that there is no such thing as leprechauns and fairies. I don't need proof that mythical creatures do not exist. There is simply no evidence that they do.
backwoodsninja 11 months ago
@Fashionificationful
"Atheism is a Religion"
Not by any commonly known definition of the word. You can't just make up stuff like this.
"because you believe, you have faith there is no God without proof."
That is such stupid logic. All you did was twist the main argument against religion around. Since atheism is not proclaiming an invisible magical being, it's hardly the same.
All the stories of magical powers? You dont find that hard to swallow?
hipstermi 8 months ago
@Fashionificationful
""definition of faith. Faith is believing in something without proof"
WE ARE ASKING FOR PROOF to your invisible magical religion. Instead of providing any or a rational argument, all you are doing is parroting what atheists tell believers. That's pretty much the "I know you are but what am I" comeback.
hipstermi 8 months ago
@hipstermi
.
Fashionificationful 8 months ago
@Fashionificationful
"But don't kid yourself into thinking that you have proof there is no God."
So by that logic...you "have no proof" Shiva doesn't exist?
You have no proof Apollo doesn't exist? (and yes Hellenic Gods have made a small comeback with believers )
You have no proof Dianetics Thetans don't exist?
You have no proof goblins, Bigfoot, or vampires don't exist?
hipstermi 8 months ago

"I don't need to provide you with "proof" that there is a God."
You need to be honest- YOU CAN'T. Don't pretend it's you saying you don't need to. If you wanted to...YOU CAN'T
"The fact that I believe in a creator is my choice, just as your lack of belief in a deity is your choice"
Existence is not dependent on belief. If you said "I CHOOSE not to believe the moon is real" and I said "I believe it's real" I could argue and win that one with proof.
hipstermi 8 months ago
@Fashionificationful
