can someone please answer a question for me? i saw oldboy a few years ago.. just watched mr. vengeance yesterday as i was unaware oldboy was part of a trilogy.. just wanted to make sure, i don't remember much of oldboy.. this isn't exactly a sequential trilogy, right? like, each movie is its own story.. yes?? thx!
@watchforpiranha Yes, it is a spiritual trilogy in that all three films are centered around the theme of vengeance. However, there are a lot of reference and easter eggs to the other films. Not to mention cameo appearances of the same actors.
Q.Tarentino is an ass clown who manages to have a career because he shamelessly cribs from obscure (and not so obscure) cinema, something he is able to do because most of his fans have little or no knowledge of films from the 60s and 70s. I read an interview with him where he was basically putting himself in the same league as Kurosawa and Bergman. That's pathetic. Yeah, his films are real deep (not). He's about as much of a philosopher as that knucklehead who made "Sucker Punch".
@tatertots725 I've heard many people say that this film is the most well crafted, but that it comes off like Chan Wook-Park is getting too full of himself - possibly as a result. The music in this trailer and the title cards (mimicking the opening title sequence) show this pretty well. So if you don't find that off putting... Mr. Vengeance is incredible. Again I've heard complaints - in this case about characters - but they all have clear motivations; I felt sorry for them, and liked them a lot.
@tatertots725 In my opinion - I don't have anything against Lady Vengeance, but I see the complaints, whether I agree with them or not. Mr. Vengeance is probably my favorite of the whole trilogy, and I really don't understand the complaints surrounding that one - in regards to characters. It's about desperate people doing terrible things for noble reasons. There are very few things they do in which you have to ask yourself why that is. They're victims of circumstance, and their own faults.
Get a grip, lol... Korean and American societies are founded on different cultural and social principles. Blaming one or the other for a re-edit is massively lame, since both cultures have different methods of narrative delivery - it's the same with all anglo-asian media relations.
in line with the series i don't know if old boy or this movie was the best.. but the sympathy for mr vengence was a waste time compared to those 2, it's not the same fucked up kinda movie. but really the trailer for his movies don't give any justice to how truly amazing the movie is. DON'T BOTHER WATCHING THE TRAILER
i try not to make bad comments about anything...but i fucking hate the american trailers for non-hollywood films. look what they've done....gah...it's unbelievably pothetic how they never give shit about the film itself...they're just trying to gather some ppl to watch the film by creating a fake..Kill Bill-like image!! this is an epic fail..an EPIC FAIL!
Worst thing about kill bill is her master is Chinese ,how did she learn Japanese sword style lol. Kill bill messed up totally bt Chinese n Japanese styles. The fighting styles are also totally Asian movie style. Storyline was bit of messes up Only great thing was great actors actresses. That why it wasn't in director best 20 films .
@nobreakpeter163978 Hahahaha I think you`re taking Kill Bill a little bit too seriously. I believe the whole idea behind Kill Bill was for it to be a parody of asian revenge films and the whole aesthetics that implies.
In no way can you compare it to this movie, they`re both masterpieces of different genres.
Why does it seem like there are so many people who can't like two things seperately? Tarantino is awesome, Chan-Wook is awesome. I don't understand why we're all apparently expected to pick sides...
u can easily compare it to kill bill, but this is far superior in my opinion. kill bill was like a light waltz through the park in comparison to how deep this movie goes.
I think the trailer is rather interesting in comparison to the actual film since it kind of depicts the film as a rather typical revenge movie and I went into it with that expectation and was pleasantly surprised that the movie was not like that.
of the trilogy, it seems like Mr. V was the realest of the three, Oldboy, the grittiest, and Lady, the most beautiful. And of course all three are deliciously violent.
@Derdoppelgaenger "Kill Bill is a masterpiece too. But i agree, the comparison is stupid." --< not at all, both directors ( Park and Tarantino ) were inspired by japanese exploitation movies of 60's, like Female Convict Scorpion ( Sasori ) or Lady Snowblood.
That's why I compare both movies and prefer Lady Vengeance by far...Just see my channel.
@MScofield007 u can easily compare it to kill bill, but this is far superior in my opinion. kill bill was like a light waltz through the park in comparison to how deep this movie goes.
@MScofield007 Probably because they're both revenge movies.
BTW, IMDb scores. Kill Bill 8.1. Kill Bill 2 8.0, Lady Vengeance 7.7
I like Lady Vengeance a lot, I just bought the blu ray the other day. But I don't favor pretentiousness. Don't give me any crap about IMDb ratings either, this isn't box office numbers here, this is widespread opinion, it's the closest you can get to objectivity. According to those numbers Kill Bill is not an inferior movie. Nice comparing apples and oranges.
@MScofield007 Hey. Don't be saying Kill Bill is bad. Sure, I love the fuck out of Chan-wook Park and all of his movies, but if someone told me Kill Bill sucked, I would cut them.
@tandooriconnection holywood is shit. oldboy made american action films look like a joke with a badget of 6 milion dolar. so funny how those assholes invest over 100 milion on every freaking movie and its all looks like shit with stupid storyline.
@tandooriconnection I know. The whole reason these masterful films aren't as praised as they should be is becasue they're marketed to Americans as gore flicks, so no one with a decent taste in movies will watch them.
@tandooriconnection I think that makes this a great trailer for the movie. The trailer only prepares the audience for the first act, and gives them no hint of the truths behind her hunt that lead to the second act. The trailer preserves all of the surprise by making the viewer think the story is simpler than it really is.
@tandooriconnection I see your point, as the trailer does set it up as a standard revenge story (the only egregiously bad part is the "Coming for you soon" which, while funny, is misleading as to the tone of the film), but in fairness that's how the plot itself runs until certain later developments which I wouldn't spoil for those who haven't seen it. It's also good that they included some of the surreal scenes and soundtrack in the trailer. All in all I think @futurestoryteller is right.
On reflection, this is a much "nicer" film than its siblings. Now that sounds a little off in a series dubbed the "Vengeance trilogy" but compared to Mr Vengeance which is one of the most down beat films of recent times and the brutality of Oldboy it feels a lot more warm to watch.
In saying that it is probably my least favourite. It still is a great film, but Mr Vengeance is a masterpiece.... And Oldboy, well its something else, I could fall in love with that film.
This was the greatest film I had ever seen for the first hour but then it sadly started drifting off for me. It's still one of the best filmed movies I've ever seen though.
it's something to be said about korean cinema. i barely got into asian cinema, and i must say i am impressed. i received the vengeance trilogy as a gift for x-mas, at first when i watched it, i thought "damn how do you justify vengeance" in of itself. park chan wook does a fantastic job of making it make sense. casts have been great. i'll be damned though if some hotshot american director takes these movies and makes a US version and totally bastardizes it.
surprisingly, now their trying to make a remake of sympathy for lady vengeance with charlize theron. i'm very concerned whether or not they're going to butcher park chan wooks work. if they even try it on oldboy i'm going to scream
personally, i like old boy among the three. but what the hell, all are awesome films, kick ass cast..i love all the three movies. maybe it depends on the persons taste on how he chooses his favorite.
This is not a movie for action fans or those who go to the cinema once a month because they are bored. you don t realy feel good after you watched this movie because it s realy touching. This is a Film for people with patience and the will to realy watch a movie not to kill some time.
The problem with that statement is that Park Chan Wook has talent and should not be lumped in the same category as Tarrantino who only has 2 remotely good films.
Kill Bill 1 & 2 were not good movies. If you wanna talk about great filmmakers... Tarrantino is not on the list. Darren Aronofski, Michel Gondry, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Francis Coppola, Sam Mendes, Stanley Kubrick, Coen Brothers, and Steven Spielberg are some of the best. So when you compare Park Chan Wook to a mediocre american filmmaker, you are not giving him much of a compliment.
Out of all the Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy, Lady Vengeance is by far my favourite. The cinematography was absolutely superb, especially the use of colours. Lee Young-Ae was absolutely fantastic. And the music was superb. Although Old Boy was equally well-done, the twisted plot and incest was just a little too much. But Lady Vengeance had just enough shock, but never went overboard.
Its not as good as Oldboy, but imo its hard to reach that movie anyway. In my opinion, Lady Vengeance is the least of the three, but still a masterpiece. Damn, I love Park chan-wook. Literally. I would marry his movies if I could ôO ;)
for me, this is the best among the vengeance trilogy. every scene is picturesque, the baroque music complemented the story well, the story and ending is wittingly subjective and the acting, most especially that of the lead actress, Lee Young Ae is superb. it's a feast to the eye and a movie that will leave you lingering on. what a good way to end the trilogy.

the korean trailer gives a different 'feel,' almot as if it were a different film. This one does seem to carry too much plot, but I expet I'll enjoy the film regardless.
They also did that with some movie ad in theaters about 2 people switching luck or something. Anyways, they get their luck back and live happily ever after. THE END.
This film is a masterpiece

the korean trailer gives a different 'feel,' almot as if it were a different film. This one does seem to carry too much plot, but I expet I'll enjoy the film regardless.

They also did that with some movie ad in theaters about 2 people switching luck or something. Anyways, they get their luck back and live happily ever after. THE END.
(The movie isn't even in theaters yet.)
