I don't understand why they didn' t add a £3 usb connector and allow it to be used via midi which would have turned this into one of the most sought after synths in recent history, they would easily have sold for £100 each by just adding a £3 connector! Geez, why tease us with real analogue and pack it into a matchbox toy?
@Keybern do all analogue synths have this sound? it sounds really clean and sort of plastic sounding (best way i could put it) compared to digital, and like the sounds can go lower down without turning into shit from what i can hear...is what im speaking of the reason people use analogue lol?
Believe me, the Monotron is not representative for vintage analogue gear at all. It has only 1 osc and 1 filter. Only 1 LFO which is the only possible modulation. No alternative waveforms, no FX, no unison, no keyboard, no midi (so you can't even plug-in your own controller).
Even the simplest vintage synth can do 10 times more than this.
My opinion: when you want to brag around with "analogue", go all the way. Otherwise you're indeed better of with a nice digital / VA.
@HarmLess7 Well you can connect the audio or line out of a keyboard and use the monotron as a filter, but not as a sound generator since it doesn't have MIDI. but the filter is really great, true analogue and fully resonant. I just got a monotron and experimented a little by connecting it to a Kaossilator Pro, and the resulting sounds are massive. It is quite stunning what this little thing can do despite its simple layout.
@xdragon718 Is it because the sound effect of the laser light beam is made by exactly using this technique with a lot of science fiction films etc. in the 1970's perhaps?
@vxsixtynine not quite, slinkies are an alternate way of achieving this effect, but the original laser effect was achieved using a nailboard, strings, a resonance tube an electrode and a high tension transformer, in short it was an electrical discharge sound, augmented with a little reverb. But the slinky is a lot less dangerous.
I just have to get one of these things!!! It's so great, and the filter just sounds like the Korg MS-20 filter!! I've seen it on a german homepage for 60 Euros, so it's not that expensive, and they are already selling those things...
I am very interested in picking one up :) when they are about here in England, if only they had usb midi!!! that is one thing I would really like it to have
I saw it at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt and first thought "Huh, so Korg build it's own version of a Stylophon", though the first sound reminded at of a angry gnat :)
Yasuhik !! where do i get this ?! I am in love :)

@maccagrabme - because there is more to USB support than just soldering on a USB connector onto the PCB.

aaaah gotta love the rich oldschool sound of analog synthesis.
i think you can even use the filter section to filter an external input, right?
SAButterbrot 1 year ago
@SAButterbrot Yes. Because the gate of an external input is always opening, the filter can be used only by connecting it.
yasushik1977 1 year ago
hey man, this is awesome but can you attached a proper keyboard into it?? so you can use it as a synth?? cheers
HarmLess7 1 year ago
@HarmLess7 Nope, you can't. People at Korg have been really lazy and forgot to implement midi, a standard feature since... 1985, maybe even earlier.
Even if you like the sound, go buy yourself some vintage analogue synth instead of rewarding those Korg-idiots.

The laser effect in star wars was made my using a metal slinky, go grab one stick it to your ear and shake it.

Pressing the keys makes a waveform, not musical data, though, so sadly that's all but impossible.

Kazu0502231 1 year ago
@Kazu0502231 メロディの演奏も、スケールを微調整してチューニングを合わせれば一応可能ですが、リボンコントローラですので鍵盤楽器というよりは、若干テルミン的な感覚で演奏する必要があります。
