Actually what I remembered Kirk and cliff were having an argument over seating arangements, and the way to settle off the dispute is with a draw of cards. Cliff got the ace of spades and demanded kirks seat. So if Kirk had that seat, he wouldve died not cliff, it just wasn't his time yet.
