How did you get the speech synthesizer to work with serial? Or was that on the computer end? Either way, that's really awesome!

Meh! I keep posting a comments and it doesn't show up. Anyway, I found a good TTS module for the Arduino on the Parallax website.  Just search on their site for 'Emic Text-to-Speech Module'

Thanks. I looked at that but needed a male voice for this robot. Plus I didn't want to spend $70 for it. Pretty cool looking module though.

Does the robot get its power from the USB port? What speech does it use? Does all the word processing take place withing the robot? I like what you've done, very clever.

Yes it is powered through the USB port. To talk it uses the FreeTTS Java library on the computer.  Unfortunately there aren't many affordable speech synthesis chips available.
