  • barkley was a pit bull mix

  • The last episode with this sequence was 3005?

  • I can't understand why my eyes are watery right now. I loved this show as a kid and there's something about this classic theme that moves me for some reason. You even got that special harmonica bonus in the beginning before the theme started to play. This is great!

  • As A Long Time Fan Of Sesame Street, This Show Has Taught Me A Whole Lot Of Things, Letters, Numbers, Ect, Ect. and When my Two Nieces are older, I'm going To Get them into watching this show, So that It'll Teach Them About Letters, Numbers, Ect, Ect. Like I Have Learned Before Them, and Also In Case Anyone Forgot.........(clears throat)........Sesame Street Is Brought To You Today By The Letter E (for Emmys) and the Number 40.....Happy 40 Years Sesame Street. And Also Have A Happy Halloween.

  • I used to want to play with Barkley so bad when I was little.

  • This used to make me sad since it meant I would have to wait "three sleeps" before another Sesame Street episode. :(

  • Does anyone know what breed the dog is towards the ending?

  • @CnL808 He's an Old English Sheepdog, his name is Barkley.

  • @CnL808 I think Barkley is supposed to be a sheepdog of some kind, judging by the hair covering his eyes

  • what happened to barky god bless Sesame Street

  • Barkley was a regular character from 1980-1992. I really miss these episodes and will get them on DVD or whatever I can and watch them with my kids.

  • any body remember the first extended song ending where the camera follows the elevated train tracks? That was pre-Barkley days.

  • @craigmusic1707 Yeah...remember Mr. Hooper too?

  • Gordon's voiceover during the funding credits actually started in the 1991-92 season, the last one with the funky chimes music. At the start of Season 24, Gordon's V/O was kept, but with the calypso music playing during the funding credits. This lasted until the end of Season 26.

  • @afriendofbean - that "funky chimes music" is the reason i looked for this vid. Haven't heard it in 20+ years. Man this takes me back......i'm an 80's baby as well.

  • I MISS THIS ....

  • Also the last season for the now bankrupt reeves teletape

  • i loved that dog

  • Barkley's loud, abrupt bark in this segment scared me as a child. Big dogs scared me as a small boy, and I didn't realize that Barkley was always friendly. I still liked him, but I was used to his more typical, nasal "rraff!" sort of bark.

  • i always wondered how they did barkley. To this day it still amazes me.

  • Lol I learned more from sesame st than any NY public school

  • Was this episode from somewhere between the years 1990-1993? The reason I'm asking this is because, I know the funky chimes music from 2:09-2:44 was taken off Sesame Street either in 1992 or 1993, and I know that somewhere between 1990-1993 that Gordon/Roscoe Orman started having a line from 2:09-2:18. I was born in the early 80s where I started watching Sesame Street in the year 1985 and from 1985-1989, I know that Gordon/Roscoe Orman never had a line during the funky chimes music.

  • OMG....*sniff* I miss being a kid...this totally takes me back....

  • what ever happen to Barkley

  • this episode was from 1992, was this one taped at Teletape Studios or Kaufman Astoria Studios?

  • @AppleJac2gether4Ever

Teletape Studios. From 1992 onward, filming was done at the Kaufman-Astoria Studios due to Reeves Communications (Teletape's owners) 1991 bankruptcy.

  • ok why does watching this make me sad, I miss this time I was seven when this first aired :(

  • Having preformed in a Quad Dog Suit for a corporate promotion I had to learn what they called "The Barkley Shuffle". HA! Thanks Barkley watching you all those years in the 70's really paid off for me!

  • RIP Classic SS ....

  • was this episode reran in the 1993-94 season of SS?

  • The Canadian Sesame Street credit roll just showed someone riding on a carpet slide.

  • I think Barkely is the reason I love dogs so much. :D

  • Seeing that ending with the "Funky Chimes" song playing at the very end takes me back to when I was a little kid watching this. Used to love hearing that "Funky Chimes" song playing, even though it would play for about 30-40 seconds. That was long enough for me to get my lil boogie on:)

  • i think that was the only dog that i liked and i'm afraid of dogs.

  • Was waiting for Oscar to say Sesame Street was brought to you today by the letters F and U

  • was this made in the early 90s does anybody know

  • Aww i loved this ending sequence. I used to always feel so bad for Barkley when all the kids ran behind the tree and disappeared and Barkley couldn't find them :(

  • at 2:07 i thought oscar was going to say NOW SCRAM!!

  • There was another ending version where you taken on a ride through the streets and then into the air.

  • My daughter used to LIVE for the Friday credits because it was the only time you could rely on seeing Barkley, her favorite character.

  • I have always taken this harmonica music for granted but it's pretty darn good!

  • so bluesy!!

  • Can you say cool? This reminds me of when Sesame Street was da ticket, and Elmo wasn't always saying, "I like annoying people so much, that's why Elmo want to sing, the nerverecking song!haha!

  • Actually, the sponsers were the letters S, Z, and the number 6.

  • I must say, the puppeteers who did that giant dog were really talented.

  • Does anybody have the closing of episode 3033? It has Vincent Twice Vincent Twice at the end.

  • Bob wanted to name Barkey - Woof-woof

  • the afterlife HAS to have Barkley in it....I'm not going if not...lol

  • @LoveLennon28 ....he has 3 heads though...and breathes fire.

  • Yes! This is the one I remember, with the kids hiding behind the tree and Barkley is like wtf?

  • Notice the funky chimes melody(3 notes) is the same as the first three melody notes of "Sunny Days". Just sing "sun----ny days" where the chimes are and it'll make sense.

  • I did like Barkley the Sesame Street dog.

1990 or 1991 was about the time when I stopped watching Sesame Street and got into other things, since I got older. Last few times I watched it was with either my friends kids or my cousins kids. When I did, I certainly notice lots of changes compare to when I watched it on a daily basis at my local daycare back in the late 80s.

  • Sesame Street Is Presented By The Letters L & Z And By Number 10. I Think It's Time To Say Goodbye To Sesame Street Charcters In End Credits.

  • How did so many kids get behind one tree?

  • Harmonica by the great Toots Thielemans

  • I remember this music. I loved it!

  • What PBS affiliate does this come from?

  • "Funky Chimes" really scares along with the old PBS logo. I think it's because i wasn't born before the 90's or 80'

  • the funky chimes rock!

  • This is the lengthiest portion of the closing theme that I've ever heard. I'm guessing Toots plays the head, riffs a little before they go to the bridge, then it's the solo, bridge again, and finally the coda.

I wish they'd just release a stereo mix of the entire theme.

  • A major kudos to BuddyBoy600 for putting this classic jingle up. I absolutely loved the Friday theme and even listening to it now at 31 (32 this Friday), still gave me goose bumps. It was crazy but when I was a kid, I thought Barkley was a real dog until I discovered it only had one eye. By the way, the "announcer" for the funding for Sesame street thing at the end is Gordon.

  • wasnt the dogs name barkley or somthing like that??

  • that big dog was funny

  • Ah the time flies by doesn't it?

  • I love that big dog

  • Love the music! In my 30's and still love sesame street and still watch it thought its killed today. Oh well, who cares if im 30 or 130 right?

  • Same here. 35 years old, love this theme. Reminds me of the days when I went to grade school and my dad was still alive.

  • You wouldn't happen to have any of the local funding credits for sesame street by chance, would you?

  • OSCAR

    0:15 0:18 0:25.

  • I love that big dog!!!

  • this brings back great memories of my mother...for when i stayed home from school sick...she'd put me on the couch and put sesame street on....and that of course shows you how much your parents care about you the most..when you are sick...

  • Like Swine Flu?

  • @BuddyBoy600

That's also known as the H1N1 virus!

  • @DartsRme312 I MISS MY MOM WITH MY WHOLE HEART...I WIL NEVER EVER STOP MISSING HER...I JUST HER VOICE...HER SMILE...HER EYES EVERYTHING...DON'T EVER TAKE YOUR MOM FOR GRANTED...ALWAYS TELL HER YOU LOVE HER...AND HOW MUCH YOU APPRECIATE HER!!

  • Barkley was an endearing but he wasn't a regular Sesame Street character, was he?

  • Well, He was owned by the deaf girl, Linda (Linda Bove).

  • Cool wah-wah guitar.

  • I miss these endings on SS they were great.

Also i read last night that Sesame workshop is reducing it's workforce by about one-fifth or 67 staff positions due to today's recession.

    What a shame.

  • This ending is the one of them all that I remember the most.

Especially the part where Barkley's by the tree, trying to figure out where the kids went, then paws at the tree before running off.

Though the harmonica-playing really makes it seem like a lazy Spring day, care-free and all.

  • Yep. I feel the same way.

  • I believe that's Roscoe Orman (Gordon) announcing the funding sponsors.

  • Yes! My favorite CPB circle and text!

  • BARKLEY!!! How is it that I completely forgot about him?!?!

  • 1992 was the last year for the funky chimes.

  • if i get married im gonna march down the isle to the funky chimes. that b cool.

  • Do you, by any chance, know when the first year was that they used the funky chimes??

  • It was the 1972-1973 season, the fourth season.

  • Oscar: Welcome to Sesame Street Hee hee hee! In the Begining I look at this video(Originally posted by PBSOLDSCHOOLONDEMAND). I see Savion is welcoming the Viewers and tell the viewers that Telly has to stay over with his Friend's house.

  • Unfortunatley, PBSOLDSCHOOLONDEMAND got suspended.

  • PBSOLDSCHOOLONDEMAND didn't get suspended. He closed his account, as was his other accounts, tvcollector and tvcollector2.

  • you know what we need another user for this, with the Savion episodes

  • Wow! this was when life was so good!!!! I miss being a kid.....lol

  • I remember the ending credits of Sesame Street with Barkly the dog. So that ending credits to Sesame Street was only on Fridays? I didn't know that. I thought it was just on selective episodes.

  • I miss this ending for this show.

  • Classic Joe Raposo music!!!

  • what is the title of this episode, BuddyBoy600?

  • LOL wow they were so good, that dog behaved like a real life doggie :)

  • What about PBS Kids Sprout, BuddyBoy600? Do they show back episodes?

  • Yes! I think so.

  • Only Season 30-32 episodes, however...

  • I'm sure gonna miss you, "real" Sesame Street...*sniffles* That theme-song arrangement takes me way back.

  • Don't worry, This is why we have PBS Kids Sprout.

  • Yeah, but they don't have episodes this old.

  • I agree. Right now, this particular clip features the longest version of the original closing theme I can find. If only the entire song was available on one of Toots Thielemans' CD's.

  • Yes, I was hoping by NOW that they would've had the full harmonica ending available. No added sounds, no voice-overs.... How long has it been? Release the damn thing already!

  • @ISNorden shocking news: there airing the old sesame streets on pbs kids sprout

  • They have for a while.

  • @BuddyBoy600 Well, at least, occasionally.

  • @lobsteros I think those episodes on sprout are from 1998-2000.
