  • as a student of the guitar, something i notice that is completely unique to Garcia's playing, is that he doesn't seem to rely on "licks."

of course he does a little bit, every guitarist does to some degree, but its so minimal, and its almost like he sees the fretboard as a continuum, like he has no preconceived notions about what to play. as a result, anything can happen, and more often than not what comes out is incredible.

it's what makes him my favorite musician in the world

  • eye heart GD

  • 45+ shows and I never saw JG move like that. Happy Frog

  • Wow.

  • X-FACTOR

  • Happy birthday, Bobby!

  • FOR THE GUY WHO OBEYS THE LRYICS AND SEEKS THEM OUT THE VOICES TELL ME SO

  • not used to seeing Jerry with any other guitar than his red one...

  • EXCELLENT lead by Garcia!

  • "rainbows end down that... highway!--"

  • Jerry from 5:05 to 5:20: I've never seen the dude move like that. Pretty funny. There's a lot of Estimated solos that are too short. This is one of those.

  • LONG LIVE THE DEAD!!!!

  • that main wah riff at the beginning is so tight

  • man jerry"s having some fun

  • @dosed1dosed1000 he knew his time would be up soon "my time coming anyday, those voice's tell me so" man do i miss him

  • @lepalashoff This video was recorded almost 20 years before he died, and he wasn't even the one singing the song.

  • @Gr0tebr0er: Look at Jerry from 5,05.

  • Love it and miss it!

  • I was never a deadhead, but I did go to a few of their concerts back in the day. Lately I've been getting back into them, and I forgot what great music they played. I appreciate them as much or even more now than before. These guys were something else. RIP Jerry-we miss you.

  • @dcfanchris both and Donna

  • Bobby is singing lead

  • @dcfanchris um do you have eyes?

  • What sort of guitar is Jerry playing? Maybe a Travis Bean? He's got the best tone....

  • man jerry had a spring in his step, he looked spry back then

  • It's so cool to see Jerry having such pleasure on the stage. Miss him

  • bob looks funny with a beard

  • love thar 70s meld of dead sound

  • i like further s backup singers more than that girl honestly......

  • My fav Dead song. I love the time signature and the groove it produces.

  • Jerry's face is awsome,,,,He sayin.... you take it Bobby you crazed lunatic!

  • Thank God for You-Tube. Sometimes I feel like I'm still back then.

  • i'd like to bring up something about drugs and the dead. i dont do drugs now but when i did ,some of the colors that this song produced were so bright. (mmmmm like sam boyd 5-21-95 awesome show) all their songs were brighter than all bands.

  • This one of the few times I've heard a non-Rasta get that Rasta sound... makes me want some Kaya.

  • Jerry Garcia was a legend. People will be listening to him and the dead 50 years from now guys. If you are glad Jerry's dead your an idiot. Think of how many more years they could have toured. I'd gladly trade Justin Bieber's life for a longer time with Jerry

  • being a 3rd generation Caifornian, and also-ly away from my bay area home right now i feel the vibe and it makes me a happy hippy,,,,

signed with LOVE 1 home sick boy....... tired of the snow

  • My favorite Dead song. It puts all reggae to shame. Long live the dead for we ARE grateful.

  • My favorite of all the Dead songs

  • @eatthelies138 I can't believe you just brought that out in me. I don't wish death upon anyone, except idiots who wish it upon good people. Jerry was a genius, much like Waters and Gilmour are. To say you're glad someone is dead is so heartless its inhuman. He touched a lot of lives, and still does. I'd say you should really listen and appreciate, but quite obviously you're incapable of that. Just stop posting your heinously disrespectful bullshit. If you don't like, don't watch.

  • @eatthelies138 You sir, are a stupid douchebag and can take anything you might believe to be true about your musical knowledge and opinion and shove it up your bitchass, cuz it's worthless. The Grateful Dead had 1 Top 10 single ever, and it came 22 years into their career. By that mark Pink Floyd had released 2 of the highest selling albums of all time. I love Floyd, but they easily take the cake on commercialism. Grateful Jerry's dead? You're the fuckin retard dude. Eat shit and die painfully!

  • @JHKFENDER86 lmfao

  • @JHKFENDER86 Jerry wouldn't like all your negative energy, you definitely not a true dead head bro. Its people like you who disgust me.

  • @clodhopper87 For starters, you don't know me, and if I disgust you then I'm certainly not your bro, so eat a dick. Secondly, the dude said he was GRATEFUL JERRY IS DEAD!! Would you rather I said nothing at all, or you think Jerry is totally cool with people wishing death on him while you worry about defending his honor cuz of "negative energy?" Thirdly, his lack of musical knowledge pissed me off. The Dead have never been commercial, until AFTER Jerry died. Floyd has always been commercial.

  • @JHKFENDER86 I was just messin wit you, I was just seeing how easy it was to push someones buttons on youtube, pretty easy. So many people waste there time on here trying to prove point, i guess i just wasted time trying to prove that its a waste of tie to prove points. Thats deep you aint got shit on me jerry!!

  • @clodhopper87 And I guess you and Jerry were close personal friends and you know how he feels and thinks?

  • @clodhopper87 My dad's a san francisco native, and been a huge fan since their creation, and he is pretty negative haha.

  • god bless keith

  • magnificent jerry!

  • @professional?too commercial? These douche' bags played at Bohemian Grove,I'm grateful jerry s dead and you are a musical retard

  • @eatthelies138 Let's take that negativity somewhere else. It has no place here.

  • jerry's solo -- pure genius

  • Listen to the way Phil slides his notes against the odd time signature in the beginning of the song. Each instrument speaks into the odd timing, providing a coherent psychedelic structure. The groove is solid and the rhythm allows for ambiguity through the jazz solo-- amazing.

  • I like drugs

  • AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Yeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!! Fucking massive intro!!!!!!

Can anybody touch them? Maybe Pink Floyd?

  • @eslmc Maybe Pink Floyd. But not live!

  • @atomlewis420 As much as I have always loved Pink Floyd, they could never touch the Grateful Dead live. Too professional and too commercial to even bother trying. Thanx for uploading!!

  • Rainbows end down that highway where ocean breezes blow

  • 5:05 Jerry IS GOD!

  • How awesome is it to see Jerry boppin' around AND smiling? He was diggin this tune that night.

  • @nocoupons classic

  • @nocoupons classic

  • Awesome! Pure delight!

  • Jerry was hot that night !! WOW !!

  • (~)} -thats a stealie

  • @leftasmokingcrater hahahaha BADASS!

  • Woo-Hooo!

  • This girl kept shouting, Bobby, Bobby, Sing me a Love Song!! Instead, He kicked down a Cassidy and this song in the set. She still spun like a dancer and made sweet love to her man of the day. Whoever he was, he's one lucky brother.

  • @Shmat64. What's wrong with talking about drugs?! Why, Nothing, good sir. If I don't discuss drug use with my little girl, I'm a damn hipochrit, or hyphochondriac! I think I spelled one of those wrong. Be honest, be Truthful! My parents drank so much in the 60's and70's I thought it was cool. They later said to me, not to copy them! Ha! Bit late there. Anyway, kids copie their olders. Be hip, be aware. Love this Song!!!!

  • The Dead saved my life, they saved my sanity in a world gone wrong. I hope Jerry sees that now.

  • I had to wait ten years to hear this song. First saw them live in Watsonville, near Santa Cruz when I went to the UCSC, 83. moved to the East and saw some storming shows at Maryland Pavilion and Hampton, Virginia. Finally, at Shoreline 93 they play it for me! One of my all time favorites. Jerry on the wah-wah peddle. Like no other, bros.

  • This show was right before the legendary Englishtown, NJ show. My first show. Saw a lot of shows at the Capital. Great place, brutal security dicks. I have a seat from the front row a Passaic cop gave me from when they tore it down. I was selling him a house and we talked about the Capital being torn down. Next week he shows up and says's here ya go a front row center seat at the Capital! Seat is numbered. Sitting in my barn for years now.

    T

  • awesome video - it's great seeing jerry just playing, smiling, playing with bob doing all the singing

  • I am the Internet TROLL EXTRODANAIR!!! I will give you fucking hippies a pass and leave this video alone. In the future I will come back and insult your mothers.

  • the long lost art of musicianship at its best!

  • @conextions Totally

  • genius

  • I thought they had color TV in the 1970s, oh well, good job Jerry and Happy 68th Birthday.

  • @YogSoggoth7 but everything is better iin black n white

  • @JimmyIDUB It can be, The Birth of a Nation, Citizen Kane and Dr. Strangelove are great movies

  • once they allowed donna to have stage monitors, where she could actually HEAR what she was doing she added beautiful harmonies

  • Like no other. Perfect intro. Scary and sublime. Finding the groove. Keeping it in the pocket. Don't worry 'bout me no. Chills, thrills, Jerry smiling like he's up to something.

Hitting all the right notes. Keeping it spooky. Scary how intuitive they are. Sharing the same brain? We were blessed.

  • Jerry at his finest.

    Thanks uploader !!!

  • Camera work is pretty shite. But what a band, and what a tune.

    Timetriptastick!!!

  • I was once known as "Bobby Weirdo". Now, just "Your Highness".

  • Y IS BOBBY SUCH A GAS.

  • A novel is a long narrative in literary prose.

i like my drugs to be long narrative in literary prose

  • Such a tight jam to smoke a bowl to...

  • @1NickDelle1 Amen!

  • Awsome video

  • great solo

  • LSD and the Dead. WELL, they all dosed on stage - - that is why we talk about "the drugs". And if you have ever been a musician and been in a great band where everyone tripped their brains out and you meltled the universe down for a bar full of people, you would get it. The Dead went "without a net", it was an esoteric experiment into the unknown every night - - with mixed results.

  • @rhynohyni they werent on lsd in this period(more like coke and speed), jerry and the rest of the band are playing more complicated and better than your bar band ever did..

  • @rhynohyni the only time the dead actually tripped on stage was in the Acid Tests

And during those, there wasn't really a stage, it was just chaos.

  • Dancin Jerry!!

This was an amazing night. I was 8th row center, the Capitol was a very special place. Peace

  • @lonesomeagle1 That's freekin awesome dude.

  • Awesome video. Its jammin

  • Look at Jerry move, I don't ever remember him move that much ever! He really is getting into it!

Would love to have seen some shows back then as my first show was not until the early '80's...

  • i saw about 40 shows in late 80's. Was into it. My old hippie aunt got me into it. But now that im older,,i look around here where i live in this hippie town,, and i think ,,fuck i hate hippies. SUch fucking morons. But this song is bad ass. Hell,,even some big bad ass bikers used to befriend the band in the 70s and so.

  • In New Jersey, thank you........

  • hmmm, so this is greatful dead. my sister used to listen to them all the time, she even had those shirts w/ the moon and sun w/ a face and those bears. she loved them. and right now. i think i do too :)

  • i saw this song live... in 2010.

  • these new Grateful Dead "Reissue Bands"

(the dead, furthur) are kinda lame i think, like, this is cool, but nowadays, the concerts are all about just reliving the glory days and bright lights....

  • @prophetdude2 yeah iv seen the grateful dead 12 times and followed phish 94/98 its not the same now

  • @liamsdad33 ew phish terrible crowd of dmb fans and yuppie hippsters

  • @liamsdad33 well i understand if u dont go to fish (phish) but GD is always GD and for that im grateful

  • @wellspout

i am tired of this crap... every time people talk about the dead they have to bring up drugs

why can't you shut your mouth and enjoy the song

    what a novel idea

  • @AlbusKong ur dumb . lsd infulenced the dead so heavily youd be a moron dont to agree

  • @jbdfc Not to agree

  • @jbdfc Yeah you don't wana be a moron. Especially from someone who says youd be a moron "dont to agree."

Everything influences people. people, Books, movies, society...drugs are one of the many things.

  • @AlbusKong Amen.

  • @AlbusKong What did one dead head say to the other when the acid ran out ?

    Boy this music sucks .......

  • @crawleykakes

LOL! Your a funny guy. But your watching this video. The actual answer to the question back in those days was, where the hell is the rest of the drops, who has the bottle?

  • @AlbusKong What's wrong with talking about drugs?

  • @AlbusKong what drugs lol.....

  • @AlbusKong But wouldn't not mentioning drugs with the Dead be equivalent as not mentioning Frosted Flakes with Tony Tiger?

  • @AlbusKong

why are you worried about what other people are doing?

why would you even leave a comment?

why would you even make a youtube account?

    What a mystery

  • man, i love 'em too.. absolutely fantastic!!

  • man i love these guys ...

  • 5:05 makes me happy inside. This will always give me chills. Go Jerry.

  • The don't write em like this anymore.

    Freakin' awesome.

  • suuuch a good version of this :)

  • 1977 The peak of the Dead....

  • Easily Bobbys best songwriting imo-love the grooves -its got a Cali/Reggae feel to it...Album version sounds good too...Go Bobby!!

  • I don't know about megapornstash(.) but I got the idea! Yes, so very tight! An amazing venue.

  • keith and donna goudchaux rock in this tune, and phil is so tight on the bass!

  • Like to post the best of the Dead - when i get a chance. And Happy New Years. This was recorded just a couple of months before my oldest son David was born. Him n' I saw the Dead in '93 or '94 at the Shoreline before Jerry's death. Just a blast!

  • One of the best songs they did!!!

  • What Venu is this show at ? It sounds Grate.

  • It's the 2nd of 3 shows at the Capitol Theater in beautiful Passaic NJ. You won't go wrong looking for gems in the '77 season :-)

  • Just made a ring tone tellin you guys to stfu where should I send it??

  • dammit how did the ringtone spam fags find this video? thought i was pretty well hidden on YT

  • thank you allah

  • Unbelievable performance! Jerry and Keith sound awesome. And Jer's practically dancing at one point. Sweet! The tune's only two months old at his point, too. Just fantastic.

  • this song just gives me the chills...everytime i play it. Long live the Dead.

  • same thing happened to me...

  • Love Bob's chord voiceing in this tune!

  • you know what's up?

  • Yeah Terrapin station and shakedown street are my two favorites.

  • Terrapin Station was my favorite Dead album. This is a great performance.

  • Im with jaxstraw on this one. You cocksmokers should stop bashin Bobby and the dead.I chalenge one of pussys to do a cover of estimated prophet on a video response. I betcha Bobby can still do it better even though he is old he has more than 30 years exeperience playing the guitar you little CUNT pricks.

  • haha classy......R.I.P Jerry!

  • Jerry solo freakin' soars- he even gets a little bouncy! Awesome, everyone seems to be feelin the moment. That's one reason I love the Grateful Dead after all these years.

  • Dude. Awesome.

  • Awesome job Bobby! Love this song!!
