For it's time this battle theme is absolutely fuckin' AWESOME. It makes no sense to compare it to any RPG afterwards since the modern JRPG format can be traced back to the first three DragonQuest games. Look at it for what it is.
For being a 2 D FF fanboy since I was young, lately I've been getting on DQ 1-3-4-5 and I like them even better than FF at times. Hating one of these two awesome series is stupid.
Nah, let's not: This list takes into account themes that are groundbreaking for their time and that few people acknowledge as of lately. It is one of the best lists out there.
Incidentally, every time I play a Dragon Quest-based game made using RPG Maker, this is ALWAYS the last boss theme... it truly is the most epic Dragon Quest Final Boss music.

@frostare It is not that i don't understand that getting first out of 100 is difficult, i was just expressing my opinion about how i think the main theme song for Tales of the Abyss is better than this. Its number 80 on this count down and of course it isn't the exact main theme because the instruments are different in this version. But it is still a "RPG BATTLE theme". (P.S. take time to erase mistakes if u notice them. It is 100, not 1000)
I say... you should put in the boss battle theme AND the last boss battle theme from the snes game Arcana. If you'd only use one of them, use the last boss battle theme, its a better remix of the boss battle theme. They're both good though. Thumbs up for anyone thats played that game til the end and knows what I mean.
@Volviert Or maybe due to Japanese culture, he was showing honor and respect to a fellow composer. It's not a FACT one is better than the other, they're both amazing composers. Everything doesn't need to be pitted in a VS. matchup. This modern culture always feels the burning desire to do it though :/

This and Dancing are both pretty good (though I'd personally not put either near the top echelon). Is it really that hard to judge on a song's artistic and psychological merit rather than which protagonist has the most absurd hairstyle? Really, guys?
@AbhorrentSin That's only in FF7, also Dragon Quest was also made by Square enix, so enough about trolling FF. I myself hate that FF7 is so Overrated while the rest of the games, which are pretty good in my opinion, are forgotten while FF7 gets all the glory and haters. Its good. Really good. Has several themes that run with each other well enough. Would like to hear an orchestration.
To all the other FF fanboys out there, I dont think this should have beat Dancing Mad either, but its still a really nice sounding work. Easily worthy of a top 10 spot.

@bestmuirhead When you say "actual" top 100, you mean 100 songs picked to be the best by the masses? That would be rigged badly. The biggest fan bases will have a huge priority over the list since their voices will be heard the most. You can probably expect tons of Final Fantasy, and Pokemon music. I think it's impossible to make an unbiased top 100 list that everyone could agree with. Everyone just has their own opinion and like to enforce the "MY opinion > YOUR opinion rule" with music.

Also, the music itself invokes movement in the soul in different ways. Though all songs are different, can one truly be called better or worse than another and be correct in everyone's eyes?

Some of you younger people probably don't think it's that epic but to people that actually played the game it is. Fighting Zoma with this playing in the background is just awesome and of you want it to be even more epic don't use the Sphere of Light.
I suggest you do that at Level 50+ of not then you should be able to beat him at Level 35-40.

@AbhorrentSin HA! Zoma ..Now that was a boss. I remember he beat me a few times. Had a lot of HP and btw, not all bosses in FF are humans or humanoids.
Take for example FF 10, the boss right after you leave that city bevelle, was a real nasty dragon, that son of a bitch had an area attack that did a shit load of damage, killed me many times.
Not all FF games are too bad...but most of them now are just made for idiotic fanboys. That's why I like the SNES emulators, old school FF ftw.
@AbhorrentSin Zoma ALONE could slaughter most Final Fantasy antagonists - and Zoma's not even the strongest. Nimzo and Mortamor are far stronger, and even Mortamor is weaker than Nokturnus (granted, Nokturnus is an optional boss).
@AbhorrentSin well...technically, final fantasy bosses are more powerful than zoma because they deal alot more damage in the thousands...zoma only deals damage in the hundreds :)
Not only is it great sounding in and of itself, it most likely paved the way for at least one other tune in this list. So if we're going by significance and not purely sound, I would say this deserves to be in at least the top five if not where it currently stands.

i do kinda like it. I also believe that there are better battle themes but still. Its original i guess. Usually its an dramatic-savetheworld-fightforyourfriends song that i heard way too much of.
I remember when I beat Dragon Quest 3 when it hit 0:31 that is when the music finally sunk in to me that this was the final boss and a game that took me roughly 10 years to beat was finally about to come to an end. (Mind you guys but I start playing this when I was around 6 and went on and off and made new files on the way)

Your list isn't very original, I see you taking the overrated pieces from the underrated games, the ones that everyone already has on their list. Other than this song, this one is pretty original. But I see things like One Winged Angel and The Battle with Magus, and I'm thinking, maybe he got his music off of the other guys' lists. Now, that doesn't have to be the case, but it seems you all just keep putting up the same songs that frankly, aren't really that good.
I don't know if anyone told you yet, but the Dragon Quest games have all been animated by Akira Toriyama, the same animator who worked on the Dragonball animes. That's why there's such a big resemblance.
I'd have to agree to this song being one of the coolest rpg fight themes ever. It's build-ups and all the bloops and blips that put the song together really create a more "poppy" sense every time another instrument is introduced. The orchestrated version is a feast for your ears.
Believe me, One Winged Angel was overhyped. Now everyone knows it's overhyped, so it's underhyped. But regardless, OWA doesn't have as much sheer musical value. It's an awesome song, granted, but still. Also, this is all based on Underworld's opinion I believe.
This was a classic, defining piece in the history of battle music. However, it's point was to allow progression, not to be the pinnacle. There are far better choices for #1 in my opinion, though if it were based on nostalgia and musical value, this would definitely have a fair run.

Same characters, same storyline (well, I should say CONTINUING the same storyline), same process of kicking ass, etc. And no, it is not that easy to tell it came from DBZ. ACTUALLY, the transformations are no longer key anymore, thanks to Shippuuden and a master key on his seal.
You don't need to study to see it because it's that obvious and sorry that you are not able to capture everything at a single glance since it's a nice thing to know.
Oh and shippueden is a totally different thing when naruto tried to be more unique.

@MegaZeldaking We do, "dumbass" because there's a thing called reading which is what you seem to fail at. He specifically typed "look at all the FF fanboys crying. Zoma would crush your skinny, long haired shemale bosses." Getting upset over that and trying to cover it up by implying that he's himself is a shemale and intentionally taking what he stated out of context only makes you look bad.

@AbhorrentSin HA! Zoma ..Now that was a boss. I remember he beat me a few times. Had a lot of HP and btw, not all bosses in FF are humans or humanoids.
Take for example FF 10, the boss right after you leave that city bevelle, was a real nasty dragon, that son of a bitch had an area attack that did a shit load of damage, killed me many times.
Not all FF games are too bad...but most of them now are just made for idiotic fanboys. That's why I like the SNES emulators, old school FF ftw.

@AbhorrentSin Zoma ALONE could slaughter most Final Fantasy antagonists - and Zoma's not even the strongest. Nimzo and Mortamor are far stronger, and even Mortamor is weaker than Nokturnus (granted, Nokturnus is an optional boss).

Not only is it great sounding in and of itself, it most likely paved the way for at least one other tune in this list. So if we're going by significance and not purely sound, I would say this deserves to be in at least the top five if not where it currently stands.

I dont get why people are so annoyed by this being number one. I mean, yes it isn't what you would expect but it is a personal opinion. Besides, the theme kicks ass! And the battle too! It was one of the longest and most fun final boss battles i have gone through.

This just means music is not just about the quality, but also emotions.
I didn't play the game, but after hearing it several times, I think I understand why it's #1, even if it's not for me.
A final boss is always epic, and if on top of that, the music is also epic, then it wins a place in you.
And "feeling the epicness" is an unrivaled emotion !!

I remember when I beat Dragon Quest 3 when it hit 0:31 that is when the music finally sunk in to me that this was the final boss and a game that took me roughly 10 years to beat was finally about to come to an end. (Mind you guys but I start playing this when I was around 6 and went on and off and made new files on the way)

Your list isn't very original, I see you taking the overrated pieces from the underrated games, the ones that everyone already has on their list. Other than this song, this one is pretty original. But I see things like One Winged Angel and The Battle with Magus, and I'm thinking, maybe he got his music off of the other guys' lists. Now, that doesn't have to be the case, but it seems you all just keep putting up the same songs that frankly, aren't really that good.

I don't know if anyone told you yet, but the Dragon Quest games have all been animated by Akira Toriyama, the same animator who worked on the Dragonball animes. That's why there's such a big resemblance.

I'd have to agree to this song being one of the coolest rpg fight themes ever. It's build-ups and all the bloops and blips that put the song together really create a more "poppy" sense every time another instrument is introduced. The orchestrated version is a feast for your ears.

Believe me, One Winged Angel was overhyped. Now everyone knows it's overhyped, so it's underhyped. But regardless, OWA doesn't have as much sheer musical value. It's an awesome song, granted, but still. Also, this is all based on Underworld's opinion I believe.

This was a classic, defining piece in the history of battle music. However, it's point was to allow progression, not to be the pinnacle. There are far better choices for #1 in my opinion, though if it were based on nostalgia and musical value, this would definitely have a fair run.

Shippuuden is completely the same.
Same characters, same storyline (well, I should say CONTINUING the same storyline), same process of kicking ass, etc. And no, it is not that easy to tell it came from DBZ. But what I'm saying is that it's not similiar enough to KNOW it was mainly based on DBZ, unless you closely study each one like a closetfag. Yeah, chi system, though it works way differently, and yeah, Naru could do a lot less hero-izing, but at least it isnt 24/7 battling. ACTUALLY, the transformations are no longer key anymore, thanks to Shippuuden and a master key on his seal.
