  • According to the wikipedia, the tune and the lyrics of this song were made at different times. The tune was made first. The lyrics were adapted to fit this tune. No one is sure what the lyrics really mean (there are different theories). Anyway, a superb performance by mario lanza!

  • @EpicBrandon123 It's about a father saying goodbye to his son who is going off to world war 1 and knowing they will probably never see each other again.

  • @gragrn / I guess it was fitting for many American soldiers also.

  • @wilcarr1 How?

  • @EpicBrandon123

  • No one sings this song better than Jackie Wilson.

  • @philly2sd haha, im sure there was a time when some irish had a problem with him singing about taking the bloom from his wild irish rose, but i think the I/Is these days are a nice demographic!

  • Everyone pls dont fight on this page, this song is one of the most epic songs i've ever heard, and I grew up with this song,so if you wanna fight go do it somewhere else..........MORONS!!!!!!

  • This song reminds me of my grandpa, RIP

  • excellente !!!!!!

  • Lanza's voice was magnificent. He copied Enrico Caruso.

Roy Orbison, with his soaring voice, sang all the verses. I cried.

We all have our different interpretations of this song. My father played much Irish music during my childhood.

    My brother is Daniel.

  • @philly2sd It's not even an irish song, idiot.

Why dont you look up the origins of it before spreading false rumors about it.

  • Does anybody know a version of this song that seems to capture the emotion of this song? I can't find one that seems to convey the sadness.

  • @PrincessNinja007 try josef locke please

  • @PrincessNinja007 I tried to send an answer in the form of a comment on this, but don't know if you've seen it. I'm not much up on this modern technology stuff, but with the help of my grandkids, who are 12, I'm getting better. Anyway, please check out the vocal of this song by Eva Cassidy, if you want to hear the sadness.

  • @jerlan23 - have you heard the versions by Elvis and also Michael Londra on YTube

  • @sainglain I haven't checked these versions out yet, but I will. Thanks for the suggestion. I like and enjoy this and many other renditions of the song, but it is sung here in a powerful voice. To me, it is not a power song, but a song of humble sadness.

  • im irish :)

  • just back from the irish pubs and heard this song all over this great place .....but please dont bag mario lanza ireland would and should be proud of this version

  • @philly2sd Talk about a great examole of melting pot. Hahahaha.

  • Why would someone dislike this ?

  • @NightHowl92 That would be 34 people who listen to "gangsta rap crap" and Lady Ga-Ga...Mario Lanza was such a CLASS ACT!

  • @NightHowl92 A lack of a soul, the most possible reason.

  • Deep and nostalgic, bringing back memories of happier days.

Why did you leave us so soon, Mario Lanza?

    God rest you forever.

    Mervyn691

  • Manly tears.

    Every.

    Single.

    Time.

  • This song was written by an Englishman and no one knows who he wrote it for. It's interesting that the Irish adopted it, being kind of miffed at the English and all.

  • @Loyceannie Indeed! Intersting that even with the English origin of the "Danny Boy" lyrics, it's popular in the Republic of Ireland as well as Northern Ireland. Maybe it's really about the transcending popularity of its much older melody, now generally called the Londonderry Air. But even that sometimes causes conflict, due to the Londonderry/Derry name controversy. For that reason, "Air From County Derry" is sometimes used as the title. Anyway, it a lovely song....LOL.

  • i'm almost cryin here

  • philly2sd,name one person who can sing it better.

  • just listened to this song and brought back happy memories of my dad singing this in a pub shinrone,

  • Thank You, Yoni for uploading the song. Mario Lanza's legacy lives on within his music. Thank You Again.

  • My dad always listened to Mario Lanza back when I was kid. I listened to Hendrix and Black Sabbath - so I never really paid attention to Lanza. My mistake. Mario Lanza possessed the finest voice and widest range of any singer ever. Even being Italian, he is able to perform an Irish song like no one else. Simply exhilirating. Thank you to Yoni89 for uploading this performance. Jeff

  • Its nice, but he t'wasn't Irish.

  • @VASINGER If Barbara Streisand can make a Christmas album Lanza certainly deserved a turn at this Irish classic!

  • @maestrojimbo Jesus was Jewish. So Barbs recording that is at least authentic. But its okay. I think Mario Lanza was a very good Tenor.

  • @VASINGER Although I am an Irish American and a fan of Streisand, i believe Lanza's recording of Danny Boy is probably more authentic than Streisand's recording of Christmas music. An Internet search on Danny Boy will tell you that the Englishman who wrote it never intended it to be specifically Irish, so any tenor can sing it. Although Christ was Jewish, Christmas music comes out of the Christian Christmas holiday. It would be like a Christian singing Jewish music at Temple, not authentic.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan Really, even for Messianic Jews? Also the melody for "O danny boy" was Irish.

  • @VASINGER The melody is from an Irish song, but the lyrics were written by an Englishman who never intended it to be specifically Irish. Therefore, I believe an Italian can sing it and be authentic. I am not very religious, so as far as I am concerned, anyone can sing Christmas songs. However, since those songs come from the Christian tradition of Christmas, I believe a Jewish person, including a Messianic Jew, is less authentic singing Christmas songs than an Italian singing Danny Boy.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan And if you want to argue that since I am not very religious, "I" am less authentic singing Christmas songs than Mario singing Danny Boy, go right ahead.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan Im not Religious either. I'm a Christian.

  • @VASINGER Granted, however it arguably is the finest version not sung by an Irishman. John Gary's" Danny Boy" is BEYOND A DOUBT the greatest rendition of this classic. Sad to say I recall reading that this great song was written by an Englishman, (perish the thought) for his son who's away at war.

  • @scubarulz The lyrics were written by an Englishman but the melody was taken from an Irish song. Of course, the lyrics are probably what is more important. This is covered in wikipedia and other sources if you do a search on "Danny Boy song". Also, although the song has been adopted by the Irish and it has been interpreted as relating to war, the original lyricist intended it to be only about someone missing someone else who is away. The missing person may or may not be away for war

  • @VASINGER So what? he sings like he is--and that's all is important!! And since when is ethnicity a badge of song/singer greatness! Streisand sings the best xmas songs!! nat cole sang 'non dimenicar!!'

  • @VASINGER We're all Irish at least one day a year.

  • Yoni89, Thank you for this abondance of beautiful gifts.

  • That is!!

  • So touching and so beautiful, a voice that soars to heaven.

  • Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ - GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST

  • Nice voice ! But Mario got some of the words screwed up.

  • Mario's version would have to be the best. Clarity, powerful voice, wow. As God intended it. R.I.P. Mario

  • @azz02f John Gary did the greatest version of this timeless classic!!

  • Awesome Version From Mario and Thanks for Posting !

    TCB DANNY

  • RIP Mario.

  • Bioshock ftw

  • Never heard this beautiful Irish song sung any better not even by anybody Irish!!Such feeling and emotion in every note in every song he ever sang, no wonder his fans still absolutely adore him so long after his sad demise.

  • this is some amazing singing. Beautifully exhaled from a talented man

  • Best Voice Ever Plus A Propa Man Think He Had Geordie In Him ;^)

  • am more in favour of my grandads version.he sang with passion like mario but every now an then had a wee dram between lines of the song, dram being whiskey. haha wonder if mario did the same

  • lol ive been looking up songs from bioshock and i only heard like 3 out of all the ones they played. they should take a cue from fallout and include a radio station u can listen to as u go. I just caught little bits of music when passing by half broken radios that were still plugged in : /

  • I wish there was a Robert White version on YouTube.

  • One of the most beautiful versions of this EVER!

  • Love Mario singing this song but prefer Andy Williams

  • Love Mario singing this song but prefere Andy Williams

  • Why is this world full of sad little people just enjoy the great singer sing a great song ,and forget about politics.I dont care if an Indian or African sings this song or where this song is from I love it and by the way I am Irish.

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 SPOT ON

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 to be sure to be sure from a lrish greek

  • A great singer. His personal family story is sad. He died at age 38, leaving a widow and four children, and she died five months later at the age of 37.

  • a great song sung by a great voice-who could wish for more.so he is not irish-i am not either but i love this piece of music

  • Mario Lanza was a favorite of mine ... he was someone who could move over from straight opera to a popular sound very well - a pure Italian-Irishman !

  • I heard this little musical gem playing in BioShock. These old classics are great.

  • If there is a better version of this song, I have not heard it.

  • GREAT,GREAT,GREAT!!!!!

  • Oh saying "good" is not even close to what truly describes this heavenly performance. The colors and shades he uses, the power and the lightness... it is breathtaking.

  • It's amazing how beautiful an Italian-American sings this song...but isn't that what's great about America!

  • Finally made a connection with goodfellas, when morry starts singing this song before he gets wacked.

  • Does anyone else find it strange that a guy named Mario Lanza is singing an Irish song?

  • @TheDMVproduction I'm sure some do, but as an Irish guy named Dan from Chicago's South side, I have no problem with it. I won't get into how the lyrics were written by an Englishman, etc. The song is associated with the Irish people. However, people from various ethnic backgrounds sing songs associated with other ethnic groups. Non-Italians have sung O Sole Mio, etc. All that matters is what the singer does with the song, and I think he does a good job with it.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan I didn't say i had a problem with it, its sounds great, i just thought it was a little bit odd. And you're completely right about other people singing other songs from other ethnicites, i just thought it was a tad bit odd. And i'm an Irish American as well.

  • @TheDMVproduction i hear what you say but .....................................this is good keep playing it and you may one day agree that was powerful but we all have an opoin

  • @mangocazzie I never said it was bad, its very good.

  • @TheDMVproduction He may have just decided to record a popular non-opera, non-Italian song, like when he recorded "If I Loved You" from Carousel.

  • @TheDMVproduction

why so? Of course it is not strange....

  • @TheDMVproduction i was thinking the same thing but he did a good job

  • @TheDMVproduction Not me. Great voices have the right to sing anything they want to beautify!

  • This video is posted on Facebook page called "Golden Tunes - Sound of Oldies", so if you have fb account and some time, check it, i guess you will like it :) Page is for everyone who like like warm cozy sound of evergreen music.

  • My mon loved this man to death! When my Dad died we played it at the Funneral home. Not a dry eye in the house. Bless you Mario!

  • I was just reminded of Dean Martin cruising; after Moonstruck the movie and a bottle of red wine - From there to Blue Eyes, Liza Minnelli, Caberet Judy Garland with her mom , and then IZ which made me saturated with good.

  • my dad used to love mario lanza singing,i never knew he sang this beautiful song,so greetings to all from the emerald isle this christmas

  • ur either Irish or ur a yank, make up ur minds.if your not born in Ireland u aint Irish sorry.my great grandfather was Irish ,I was born in Scotland but live in Australia so does that make me an Irish/Scots/Australian...........P.S Shelley u need to lighten up u cant possibly have celtic blood in you,I have heaps of Irish mates and they've all got a sense of humour you should be able to tell when someones taking the beeejjjeeesssuuusss outa yeh lol

  • @lochfitty Actually if all four of your grandparents are Irish, you have pure Irish blood.

  • The context? It sounds like perhaps a mother (or father's) farewell to a son--otherwise why "as dead I well may be" (of old age--versus the younger offspring. As to the nationality, it only makes sense of a land where "pipes were calling" Irish pipes or Scottish bagpipes? Maybe the pipes are calling the son to war? --But then the departing son would be the one that "dead may be". Hmmm, puzzling.

  • great singer singing a great song, also eva cassidy does this song well

  • He always sings with feeling...we miss you, Mario.

  • celts unite-welsh,irish,breton,scottish,manx,cornish,and galicians-i.m.f. out

  • if you dont love this song, there is something wrong with you

  • Thank you. Been looking for this for ages!

  • Wonderful voice,I love it.Thank you.

  • Marvellous!!!

  • Nice version of " Danny Boy" by a great Tenor.

  • This song is an icon of genuine sentiment. It doesn't matter who wrote it, when or why. The song stands on its own two feet.

I shall sing this at the funeral of a friend's mother in just two hours from now... @ 10am Mon 22-Nov - Gulp...!

So, I'm listening to several versions, looking for inspiration. Seems the right approach is full of feeling but not OTT on sentiment.

P.S. I'm a Welshman, but can relate with ease to the emotional Irish approach to such songs. Wish me luck!

  • hello friend, listening to this masterpiece i came across your post and i am inquiring about the funernal? how did that go if may i ask, singing Danny Boy.

if i may be so bold in saying i sure they loved.

blessings to you and your friends family.

    take care friend.

  • @hanno21664 Funeral performance went well, with hundreds of people there to see the old lady off.... Danny Boy went well. I tried to perform the song with emotion and feeling, but without overdoing the sentiment... It was certainly nerve-jangling, but I did as well as I could possibly have done, allowing for the fact that it was 10am on a Monday morning! Thanks for your thoughts, Alun

  • theres nothing like an Italian singing an Irish tune like this

  • @babystinky Actually, it's even worse than that. Three out of four of his children died young. His two sons died young from heart attacks, one before age 40, like him, and the other at 55. A daughter was killed before age 50 in a car crash. His wife was 37.

  • my grandads fav song of all time ! i love it too!!

  • Definitive? Possibly. Locke's version is pretty strong mind. Pull up a seat, listen again... you decide.

  • "I'm gonna miss this place. Rapture was a candy store for a guy like me Guys who thought they knew it all. Dames who thought they'd SEEN it all. Give me a smart mark over a dumb one every time"

  • Amazing, how Mario sings in an Irish accent. Great Song.

  • I've heard it many times before, but this version i first heard in the movie "Miller's crossing". Very good version of this song, personally now my favorite.

  • am learning this on the piano and this version is the closest to the musical score what a voice

this mans hit was drink drink anyone remember that

  • My favorite.

  • My father and I LOVED Mario Lanza and my Dad was Scotch/Irish! Isn't that one of the many glorious things about music! It truly is the universal language. Give me a fabulous voice and a heart that feels the music and I don't care what nation the singer is from. This was gorgeous!!!

  • @burmaposey my father and I are also scots Irish and we feel the same, what a glorious voice!

  • The best

  • is mario fond of publicity ?
