This opening battle is brutal, but I still think Mazinkaiser is overrated, IMO. UFO Robo Grendizer, to me, will always be the baddest mecha ever. Still, like Great Mazinger's entrance in ths clip: "THUNDER BREAK!!!!!"

It was basically the showing that the enemy was getting stronger. Mazinger Z being first then Great Mazinger when the enemy was tougher. An this showing that Z and Great had reached a point of becoming surpassed. Thus the "real" Great and Mazinkaiser being the final products.

Great/Z were not surpassed because from the looks of this fight it seems as tho they could have held their own threw out the rest of this fight if they had backed each other up more effectively, and had been more careful, and the great booster had arrived SOONER!

Also even their weakest attacks could destroy beasts so I dont think they needed an upgrade... atleast not yet

And lastly Docter Hell would never have discovered Hell beast if it wasnt for his desperation to match Mazinkaisers power

Even if Great was on the ground an destroyed some beast when they jumped Z. Z wouldnt be fuctional and Great would still have the ground an air beast to fight alone till the Great Booster came. An even then the beast only retreated because the had Z.

Honestly this butchering was merely an attempt to get rid of Z and introduce Kaiser and their difference of power, hence why they went so far as to have Kaiser tear Z to pieces :(

They basically wanted to establish that Kaiser was on an entire 'nother level from Great and Z.

It works, as you said, but it's a shame, because newer Go Nagai fans seem to think that Mazinger Z is a weak robot because of it.

Kouji's voice is so distinctive compared to some anime voice actors. Bishonen all sounds he same, timid heroes sound the same, badasses sound the same, but Kouji Kabuto ONLY sounds like Kouji Kabuto.

You know, it seems to me that Z and GZ go down way to fast here, just for the sake of introducing Mazinkaiser. The mecha that take them down arn't even special, just ones from the series. I guess Dr. Hell FINALLY figured out 1-on-1 fights favor the Mazingers.
