I think using phones (especially ones with good isolation) is not very wise because of safety reasons (you won't hear any surrounding sounds). This is especially important in urban traffic.
I do think, though, that using such headphones in long high speed journeys, where air noise level is significant, will be beneficial not only for your comfort and ear protection, but also,if music is not very loud, for your safety!
It's illegal to drive with earphones in both ears when driving here (California).
