for those who watched most of the coverage I cannot recall a single west indian reporter. Mr. Howe makes it sound like many people were being unduly targeted for searches and being shot at unjustly (ostensibly the reason for the riots in the first place)...I think its true that Syria is probably an extreme comparison...but still isn't it essentially correct that the reasons for rioting may be similar (i.e. lack of jobs and social justice)?

As far as I'm aware it is lawful for police to stop and search anyone if they think that person is involved in criminal acts. I've been stopped myself numerous times and don't have a problem with this. Maybe you are right but I don't believe the riots were about jobs. Only my opinion but the interviews I have seen indicate rioters'looters wanted free trainers and PCs, nothing else.

@djMissMixit I think where I would slightly disagree with you is over the question of weighing tariff rates. These have to be assessed not just in an abstract sense but in relation to prices. Ad valorem duties are in theory more protectionist but specific duties can be relatively and absolutely heavier if prices fall. So, the price variable has to be considered as an important factor in weighing the tariff. However I agree with your general point about protectionism.

I think it is safe to say that the British Broadcasting Corporation is no longer the institution it once was. There are noteworthy exceptions like Sackur, Curtis and Brooker, but in the main the media group have largely forsaken it's goals of neutral, honest and non partisan reporting.

Whilst it is lawful to stop and search people on the street, the 2008/9 Police and the Criminal Justice System report highlighted the fact that black people were seven times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people, which was greatly disproportionate to the amount of crime black people committed. It's when the police disproportionately target people based on fear and racial bias that people begin to lose faith in the police force. It is a shameful statistic.

Mr. Howe makes it sound like many people were being unduly targeted for searches and being shot at unjustly (ostensibly the reason for the riots in the first place)...I think its true that Syria is probably an extreme comparison...but still isn't it essentially correct that the reasons for rioting may be similar (i.e. lack of jobs and social justice)?

@1gladdis He is a man of his time, which was the 1980s when there were legitimate grievances over the SUS laws. As far as I'm aware it is lawful for police to stop and search anyone if they think that person is involved in criminal acts. I've been stopped myself numerous times and don't have a problem with this. Maybe you are right but I don't believe the riots were about jobs. Only my opinion but the interviews I have seen indicate rioters'looters wanted free trainers and PCs, nothing else.

@djMissMixit I think where I would slightly disagree with you is over the question of weighing tariff rates. These have to be assessed not just in an abstract sense but in relation to prices. Ad valorem duties are in theory more protectionist but specific duties can be relatively and absolutely heavier if prices fall. So, the price variable has to be considered as an important factor in weighing the tariff. However I agree with your general point about protectionism.

1. The media has no clue of what is going on. She started thinking he is going to condemn the riots and he was actually not.
2. That BBC and any other major channel have huge databases on everyone that they use for their underground purposes.
