As a kenyan, i agree with Hon Anyang, 3 months ago,with the little contribution i make for my mother.I pay 2000 ksh a year.NHIF card was able to pay for my mother ksh 800 per day,so for 20 days in hospital, the card payes 16,000 ksh. Please Hon Atwoli let us kenyans be deducted a bit more so the card can pay more. NHIF is the only insurance,which majority of kenyans can afford. WELL DONE for this Hon Minister for health.Kenyans should and must pay the new rates for their own good.

@siasabora You know many African communities do not have a sense of future savings or insurance. Making the rich pay more for health is a good thing, because it insures the citizens from catastrophic expenditure.

I recommend a movie called Sicko by Michael Moore to give you a sneak peek at the issues of healthcare financing. You will see that Nyong'o is right

@siasabora I think the 2500 was said not to brag but to figuratively show how we spend more on ethereal things like food at present, and less on solid things like h.care. Did you get the movie? I'm sure we can discuss this more and I can share some of my insights.

The present situation where people mint money as medics is dictated by the present imbalance, and so "willing payers" end up enriching the "good" medics. Had they invested this money in Social Insurance, they'd get more value from it

What Nyongo doesn't tell us is that apart from having a ksh 2,500 lunch at the serena, he and other members of parliament are entitle to private medical attention either at the up market Nairobi hospital or overseas and all these at the expense of the Kenya tax payers most of who earn less than a ksh 100 a day. This is a man that earns ksh 800,000 a month untaxed salary.

That being said, please see the point of the professor. I notice many people on this forum and in Kenya do not really understand health financing. Investing more in healthcare is insurance to avoid catastrophic expenditure when you have a medical emergency or serious unexpected and costly illness. I don't know why people are not getting this. Let's discuss more

ODM is full of Idiots!!! More taxes, more kissing ass to foreigners like Rannerberger and IMF. Government run healthcare is not quality healthcare. Reduce the cost not increase tax. Give the counties the tools to create their own innovative reforms that lower health care costs e.g electronic records, broadband access will enable diagnosis through internet from the village to specialists in Nairobi. People are complaining coz why pay more for shitty services.

@dr: and the way to improve quality care is to rid us of health care expenses tht are squandered on unnecessary redundant tests n often unproven treatments. The over-priced cutting-edge drugs should be replaced by a visit to India for cheaper effective drugs.

Private health insurance has its bottlenecks, as the movie shows and as the US is discovering. And private insurance cannot pay for preexisting conditions, while social insurance can. In the end, that is the only sure way
