Vidal is right on the money here. The standard of life and economic wellbeing will go down and is going down. The country will be completely economicall bankrupt in the very near future. The Republicans will procede to reduce the size of government by firing tens of thousands of workers, creating even more unemployed who pay no taxes, who pay no morgages, who may not even be able to pay rent.
vidal's life charts the corruption of the republic thru militarism, the corporation, and the greed driven system we now see in place. hes of the old american brahmin class who once played a positive role and then were edged out of the way by the wall streeters, whose only allegiance is to money.
@ColdChicago I don't know if they played a positive role but they were not excessive and had restraint. The Wall Streeters don't give a good goddamn and so long as the flow continues, they will be happy.

That's the key.

That's why Nixon was forced to resign.
Forget the Watergate break-in, Nixon was putting Corporate America to the screws demanding moneys for campaign.
Keynes and Roosevelt did not rescue the economy. Roosevelt worsened the Depression, and even allowed the wholesale theft of everyone's gold. The ramping up of production for WWII laid the groundwork, but the economic recovery did not happen until after the war--and after Roosevelt--when an unscathed U.S. could supply the rest of the world a restructuring to its own profit. The Keynesian clowns in D.C. are continuing to run the economy deeper and deeper into the ground. They are the problem.
I wonder if the Ex-regan fringe group includes the likes of Ron Paul? Alot of what Gore is saying lines up with what RP says. Except of course the bit about Keynes. Although his final sentence says a lot. "At least they appeared to." No doubt they did but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The tap that feeds welfare dependence is the same tap that feeds the military industrial complex and the bank bailouts. Turn off the tap and take back the power.
Vidal hits it on the head. We are facing bankruptcy. The Wall Street bankers and traders who causes it are pleased and proud of themselves. They made their money, by screwing the rest of the country. The main problem with these guys is not that they don't know right from wrong. They do. They, just never apply any form of "social contract" to themselves. Like the drug dealers in northern Manhattan, these criminal psychopaths in southern Manhattan...have no sense of attachment to society. None.
@jeloopa The Republicans see the American people, meaning the middle class and the poor if they are acknowledged to exist at all, as the enemy. The citizens are a herd of animals to be controlled. Im sad to say, i think the problem with America is that the majority of the population do not have direct contact with the consequences of war on their own soil.
Certainly in Europe, the horrors of war, and the effect on the country for years to come is taught, not just by the pain in the eyes of those alive during WW2.
Similarly the poorer countries, with death squads and puppet regimes (often American), they know the horror.
War cannot be left to people like bush, cheney, bankers, etc
Where I come from (and subsequently left!) the people are too busy trying to afford the extortionate prices for everyday living.
Now that the mega-shops have destroyed local economic stability and transfered wealth to the 'shareholders' my country is now becoming a barren land devoid of regional cultures.
In the struggle to 'survive' I suspect many simply dont have the time to think about the changes around them.
I emigrated to live in a fairly "lawless" country. Its remarkably nice!
That is one of the problems. The only expense of war is literally the expense of it. The actual war is 1000's of miles away.
Fortunately the economic consequences are really being felt now. Too many smart people over-complicate the very simple utilitarian, money-centered decision making of Americans. Gate is more powerful than Obama.
Money=power in America; a little bit of knowledge to go along with the money is good, just so you know how to weild the sword of money around.
The Americans put trillions of tax payer money in military training, upgrades, defense, mercenary camps, etc etc all over the world...They're ready for Armageddon, not worried about the Chinese. Then again, the people in control are all about money & control, so it doesn't matter who wins- or more importantly who they work for. It certainly isn't us.
Gore foresees 'bankruptcy' putting an end to 'insane wars'. He is absolutely correct and, in the end, bankruptcy will be even costlier because of the trend that was begun during the Reagan years as a direct result of REAGONOMICS. That is, ONLY ONE PERCENT of the nation owns MORE than about 90 percent of the rest of us COMBINED.
Therefore, a BANKRUPTCY for America will be a very, very hard crash from which there was NO bounce as their had been during the FDR administration.
In addition to a demonstrably unsympathetic personality, Gore Vidal is an ordinary writer and an extraordinary fool. A miserable character, he looks down on everybody. He has no sense of reality. And his talent for political analysis is hardly above that of the average paranoid schizophrenic
Dear Vearl, I think Vidal would be offended by your inclusion of him as a member of the "greatest generation". The greatest generation is characterized by simply failing to think anything through. Vidal is definately nothing like that! Even after Vidal's illustrious career, spaning several decades, I doubt if even 5% of the willfully ignorant, who call themselves citizens, would recognize his name or understand what he has to say. As for me, I think the Hippies were the greatest!
from what i can gather, he disappeared for the whole of my life from the public eye. and seeing as i am well more then old enough to vote, it should be understandable that i had never heard the name uttered before.
Keynes, the man who nationalized all the capital industries of Britain? Why would anyone think his policies were good? His ideas crushed the UK's economic system for decades.
Keynes is probably the man whose ideas were the most influential in dragging the U.S. out of the depression in the 1930's, and they might help us in getting out of the current one also. But don't take my word on it : read Paul Krugman's book called 'Peddling Prosperity : Economic Sense and Nonsense in the Age of Diminished Expectations'. It might help you think of Keynes differently.
Nationilised institutions are accountable to the people. Private institutions are accountable to shareholders. Who would you rather own your water supply? The people that drink the water or someone in Dubai who's only concern is extracting maximum profit.
Do you feel safe drinking water from your municiple water supply????? So you trust what the politically appointed authorities decide for you. If you trust them, why not trust someone in Dubai. Think of me next time you open a bottle of spring water bottled by big business.
I don't drink bottled water because I can drink it out of a tap in my house for literally 1,000th of the price. My main point though is that the natural resources of a country should be owned by the people of that country. Is that a radical concept?
And when the people own the natural resources of the country, who will manage and run the resources? Who will determine what resources should be exploited, what the costs should be, who will receive the benefits of those resources? Unless you are living in some sort of direct democracy, and you do not, I can't see where there is one difference between business and government, except governments can ammend, add or eliminate laws, regulations and codes.
no ones willing to look at themselves and take responsibility for what they've done, no one wants to talk about reform because it means turning the light on them and whoever is to blame, they all want to point the finger at someone else.
Are you kidding? Keynes' ideas run in direct opposition to the ideology of the current leadership and mainstream free market ideology that got us into the enormous mess we're in right now.
It's not a prophecy, it was reported by numerous economists ever since the financial deregulation of the 1970s, the only surprising aspect is the degree.
The Reagan administration tried driving us into debt to increase their own power, then the same guys moved into the Bush cabinet and finished the job. Their scheme worked for a while, but you can't run people in this country with a whip like you can in Columbia or in Zimbabwe (too many of us have m-16s). So a dictatorship won't come, though a depression likely will.
Re: "The Reagan administration tried driving us into debt to increase their own power"
...and their own wealth. Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthy TRANSFERRED wealth first to the upper quintile and subsequently to the ELITE one percent which now owns more than 90 percent of the rest of us combined.
We live in a representational Democracy; that means you vote for officials to represent you, ergo the nullification of the popular vote. Americans presidents are elected by delegates not by your individual vote. You may as well stay home for all the influence your individual vote is going to have on the outcome. If you don't believe this simple fact then you understand NOTHING about the true nature of power in this country.
The corporations ARE the power, and they don't give a F*CK about YOU! To quote the late, great George Carlin, "It's a big club, and YOU ain't in it! You and I are NOT IN the big club! ...The real owners of this country know the truth: It's called 'The American Dream' because you have to be asleep to believe it!"
Just look at us. Everything is backwards; everything is upside down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the major media destroy information and religions destroy spirituality.
Penny have you done any research into any of this, or are u just shooting off, come and talk w/us when you learn something. Reading is a very powerful tool to wisdom, shooting off in a confused manner doesn't help any of us. Read your Bible, read the news research articles on the internet, what you will find will make you so angry at your gov't you'll be spitting nails. I could share w/u where to find this info, good luck in the end times, you will be begging God to take you. U r very young.
When I said young, I meant you have much to experience and learn.I hope and pray God will spare your soul and have mercy upon you. Just keep reading and researching. So, you feel uncomfort w/GOD he loves you unconditionally, do you know of anyone like that in the universe? I repeat GOD LOVES PENNY! God bless you. John 3:16. PEACE:)

I know their have been lots of bad decisions in the last 15 years by our presidents but it doesn't change the fact that these countries do not care whether we are minding our own biz or not. They resent what our Founding Fathers stand for and wanted!
Do you really believe the America the Founding Fathers had in mind was a corporate gangster nation run by unelected scoundrels who hide behind words like freedom and democracy and use mass murder to pocket their ill gotten gains??
Im sorry pink climax and I love your name by the way. But Gore Vidal would eat Glenn Beck alive. Your comments appear to the right and unfortunately given the missteps of our president and constant republican scandals, the left will legislate for years to come. And the right need look no further than the mirror
I think Gore makes many valid points, but I do think there is some faulty stuff as well, nobody is perfect. I admit I don't know probably even 10% of what he does so I might be talking from ignorance. I wish that I could trust some sources of info as truth but now and days, where do I go for truth?
Thx for comment on the name, Pink Floyd Rules.
Guide me to truth cause that's what I WANT to know!!
Thats the problem and I empathize for your search of truth becuz I share it. It has become so distorted. I feel the truth lies within my own conscience. I urge every America to become informed and see through dirt that this administration spits at us.
You know it's interesting, I guess to uncover truth you really gotta first want to know it , and second go search for it with great effort, but do I really want to discover these truths. Something tells me it would be like, man wtf is goin on. I will but man, I think both the Dems and Repubs are just screwed up right now.
Times are really creeping on us that something serious is going to happen, whether it's a new Revolution, the Second Coming, or the ultimate collapse of America and our Constitution as we know it. Bush and the congress are trying to give away our sovereignty with this L.O.S.T. treaty as we speak, but lets not fool ourselves, a Dem president would do same thing.
I disagree. I dont feel a dem would do the same thing. Philosophically there so different. And although the Dems are far from perfect, I believe they will end this stupid war. Whereas republicans, in their infinite wisdom want it to keep it going.
His position on department of Education is not to demolish it, but to give it back to the states and stay out of it. Education is predominantly paid for through property taxes of each state.
Remove the asterik above in the link. Here's some of the truth. This is why we need to scream louder about denying access to mainstream media platforms for ANY candidate. We cannot let the money barons PICK our candidates for us. WE THE PEOPLE will choose this time.
Doesn't palast think that 9/11 is some inside job? Confirm that for me cause I think I heard that somewhere and I def don't want to know what anybody who believes that has got to say to be honest.
Palast explains that it was NOT an inside job. American intelligence agencies were being blinded from Saudi links to financing terror on behalf of the Bush clan.
The Bush family and the royal house of Saud are outright corporate gangsters with ties to the oil industry.
Small wonder Dubya was NEVER elected by the will of the American people.
The right spends too much. And still rationilize lowering taxes. Its this insane thinking that has destroyed republicans. It started with reagan and continues to this day
For a guy this smart, he just doesn't seem to understand that we are not the cause of the lack of peace in the world. He basically doesn't even want to acknowledge the Dictators of China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, etc and wants to cry about how America is not minding its own business.
"The belief is common that the day is at hand when corporations...swaying power such as has never in the world's history been trusted in the hands of mere private citizens...will ultimately succeed in directing government itself."
- Henry Brooks Adams, Grandson of President John Q. Adams (1838-1918).
If the U.S goes bankrupt , I might has well save up and go to principality of Monaco and be one of Prince Albert's subjects. The tiny nation is just a big bank they are not going broke.
The weathers good on the Mediterranean. I know some French and Italian.
The emirates are like the principality of Monaco in Europe run by Albert a monarch, We don't want dictatorship, People in the middle east are so normalized to it that it means nothing to them.
Like Monaco what works for small emirates doesn't work for large countries. The good thing about Monaco is that there is no taxes if you can afford to live there.
Bankruptcy for the USA... China will be the next superpower if it isn't already. What really annoys you guys about Vidal is that the energy it takes to deny what he is saying is the evidence that he is right. Bush will bankrupt you morally, financially and spiritually. His legacy is going to be awful for those who as Shakespeare said - "winked at his discord". All are punnished.
I don't agree with a lot of what Vidal says, but he is right on point talking the way he does about the Bush administration. I still think he is an ultra-leftist nut, but he feels the same way I do about Bush...
The notion of American exceptionalism adopted so wholeheartedly by the Bush administration is nothing new. Other superpowers have been there before. They too have witnessed the loss of their prime position to rising powers. No superpower in modern times has maintained its supremacy for more than several generations. The United States, already clearly past its zenith, has no chance of becoming an exception to this age-old pattern of history.
I agree...when we are now living in a Homeland, I feel we are living in the same area as when Hitler was speaking of his Germany. It's completely scary.
A gloomy forecast! I believe Vidal's account of elected officials' contempt for commoners. How common! Who doesn't share this contempt on occasion? Standing at the back of a long queue at the bank? Finding our parking places taken? Listening against our will to the neighbour's music? etc etc This is why we are not necessarily governed best by one of our own.
Maybe my phrasing wasn't the greatest but my point was that that everyone occasionally hates strangers and leaders would be more effective if they rose above this hate. I live in Canada but I think I developed my misanthropy while working as a cashier in a busy department store, where the selfishness of our species became painfully obvious to me.
Yes I have to agree. Sadly the masses are asses. The only thing that truly sets us apart from other animals is our ability to convince ourselves that we are something better than what we truly are. An all pervasive sense of entitlement. Our corporate owners know that if you massage our greedy nature you can do almost anything with or to us.
At what point, and how do we take our country back? The Democrats are so out to lunch! We need some real leadership. We really need to impeach our Executive Branch. I hope there are thousands watching. Sparkles wants an America that may have never even existed. I too want to believe in us, but without anyone ready to impeach the emperor, .....
Gore Vidal Your FUCKING idiot, why shouldent I earn/make as much money as i possibly can?? I am the one who earned the money, no body else earned this money! So they can Fuck off, and i will make as much money as i can, Capitalism needs to be restored people! the only way to do that: Is to vote 4 Ron Paul 2008!
W is responible for 911? I thought you knew history. What about the USS Cole? Do you think your "enlightened" lifestyle would be tolerated by devotees of the Quaran?
Gore has all the integrity of a Kojo Annan. It's amazing the lies this wrinkled, old fossil perpetrates. The Gore Crime Family should be Tomahawk missiled immediately !
You are a prime example of an ignorant, uneducated, misinformed American. You're no smarter than some fuckin drunken redneck stumbling around at a Nascar race. But go right ahead and keep believing lies, they feel alot easier to believe than cold-harsh facts, don't they? How immature are you? Tomahawk missle them !? YEAH! You sound like a five year old, honestly get a grip..
Wow. AriesLudzik sure knows about the world. His comments are full of insight and truth and all sorts of evidence that Vidal is full of shit. Listen to AriesLudzik. He spends hours and hours each day dropping science on all the lefties!
Boy, I love Vidal's honesty and courage. The corporations have bought out our media and we don't get access to this type of truth except on the Internet.
You, young person, better hope that it is not. There are alot of lives depending on hope and a better future. That does not come by idealistic ranting. It takes work and passion. And things do not always go well, but I have been in some of the not-so-nice countries. That can be really frightening.
This homeland stuff is annoying. The muslim's don't hate us. I was a reporter in Pakistan/Afghanistan in November/December 2001. I was aided consistently by muslims (fixers, government officials, ordinary people). They did not ask me who I voted for. They did not ask my angle on the war. I was for the intervention, so were most of those locals. Most spoke warmly when talking about relatives in the US or in Britain. Perhaps I was lucky. Who knows?
no one is suggesting that the USA has not had many many proud moments, and that their past kindness to other nations cannot be taken for granted. But the world is now asking, what has happend to this once great nation. How could the USA vote in a madman like Bush, not once but twice. The world is saddened by the imploding that is happening to the USA and by the Republician evolution of this once great nation.
I'd say you're half right. Half of the world is saddened, the other half (primarily China) is licking it's chops as our once great nation is now ripe for the picking. I'd say that China has already began their takeover of America. They are certainly poised to become the next great superpower. And the great corporations and their handlers(American and otherwise) have positioned themselves to continue their rule and maintain their power.
The existence of the Department of 'Homeland Security' certainly raises some disturbing issues.

"A miserable character, he looks down on everybody."
He lacks naivety. I'm not aware when that became a bad thing. Perhaps when Bush was instituted by SCOTUS.
joshatkins94 2 years ago 2
Dear Vearl, I think Vidal would be offended by your inclusion of him as a member of the "greatest generation". The greatest generation is characterized by simply failing to think anything through. Vidal is definately nothing like that! Even after Vidal's illustrious career, spaning several decades, I doubt if even 5% of the willfully ignorant, who call themselves citizens, would recognize his name or understand what he has to say. As for me, I think the Hippies were the greatest!

Keynes, the man who nationalized all the capital industries of Britain? Why would anyone think his policies were good? His ideas crushed the UK's economic system for decades.
Hamilton940 2 years ago

1Mined 2 years ago 2
Do you feel safe drinking water from your municiple water supply????? So you trust what the politically appointed authorities decide for you. If you trust them, why not trust someone in Dubai. Think of me next time you open a bottle of spring water bottled by big business.
Hamilton940 2 years ago
I don't drink bottled water because I can drink it out of a tap in my house for literally 1,000th of the price. My main point though is that the natural resources of a country should be owned by the people of that country. Is that a radical concept?
1Mined 2 years ago
And when the people own the natural resources of the country, who will manage and run the resources? Who will determine what resources should be exploited, what the costs should be, who will receive the benefits of those resources? Unless you are living in some sort of direct democracy, and you do not, I can't see where there is one difference between business and government, except governments can ammend, add or eliminate laws, regulations and codes.

The notion of American exceptionalism adopted so wholeheartedly by the Bush administration is nothing new. Other superpowers have been there before. They too have witnessed the loss of their prime position to rising powers. No superpower in modern times has maintained its supremacy for more than several generations. The United States, already clearly past its zenith, has no chance of becoming an exception to this age-old pattern of history.

no one is suggesting that the USA has not had many many proud moments, and that their past kindness to other nations cannot be taken for granted.
