I don't mean to nitpick, but the title of your vid is "...you be the judge" and then you gave us all the reasons *you* think the tenacious is the better knife. LOL
You made some good points, though. I will say the cutouts in the liners is a very minor one. I've got here with me a Mini Grip and a Gen1 Delica. The Mini Grip has full liners, no cutouts. The Delica is unlined. The difference in weight is so slight in use and carry that I don't notice it.
before i used to get frustrated because the prices of spyderco knives are just so expensive. I've always wanted to get one but being expensive, i simply can't afford it. Now come the tenacious. I'm so thrilled and i immediately ordered one. Great move spyderco!
Like the video but if you know where to get a benchmade vex for $35 I want to know, cheapest I can find one is 55-60 online? I've got the tenacious already but I love benchmade blades and especially a $35 one but I just don't see it anywhere, please advise!
I would have to say that the Kershaw leek is a solid knife for 35$ (65$ at most stores which is a ripoff but you can get them for 35$ from kershaw off of amazon). Long story short, if you dont have a leek (I dont yet but I want one) then get one!
A properly made liner-lock isn't supposed to drift over half way or further on a new knife. It's supposed to engage less than half way over. The more you use the knife over the years, the more the liner-lock will work its way across the handles. After a few years of regular use, that's when it should engage half-way or further. But not brand new.
The reason the liner on the vex (and many other more expensive knives) only goes over about half way is because if you look at the tang of the blade where the liner contacts it, its actually angled. as that angle wears over time from use, the liner will have room to move over; keeping the lockup solid. if the liner is already all the way over, the tang wears in the same spot, creating a gap between the tang and liner which translates to vertical blade play. btw, nice comparison overall!
the only thing i hate about the spyderco tenacious is the fact that it can easily open by itself, and plus ive heard a lot of people getting cut that way including mr nutnfancy.
As much as I love what Benchmade does, I think a good chunk of the price of their knives is wrapped up in having the butterfly on the blade. You're paying some for for the name. In my opinion, the Tenacious is the better build because of the thickness of the liner lock. The Benchmade liner is thin, and with hard use may be forced past the lock up point to slide in between the blade and the far liner. The Tenacious is too thick to do this, so even if it did slide past, it would remain locked
Great comparison. As economical as these knives are, most people can afford both. I dont have the vex yet, but plan on getting one soon just because of the price point.
since the vex is discontinued and i can get it for $13 what would you suggest?

The vex eats the dirt, why the fuck couldnt they have a tip-up pocket clip option?

Spyderco could have used 440c or aus8 steel and it would be a much better knife.

The liner lock being fully engaged isn't a good point
chibraxial 1 year ago
@chibraxial if you love to get cut up like a mother fucker it's not a good point. more engagement means more stregth

@wray0616
Sorry you're wrong.
a good liner lock never need to be fully engaged. The more it is engaged out of the box, the quicker it'll wear off and be good to trash.

I would the Spyderco Endura 4 would be more of a "standard" .. from Spyderco, anyway.

Good comparison review. I really don't like the lack of clip options on the Benchmade. That is a deal braker, along with the tight thumbhole.
