  • How about showing a follow-up video that talks about galvanized steel?

    Great series, please make more.

  • sodium would be awesome :D

  • The carbon comes from the coke XD

  • The Professor did "Don't Try This At Home"!

  • Is non stainless steel still used in some domains, Proffesor?

  • @IAINMAN96 regular steel is used in survival and combat knives, because it is stronger and holds an edge better. Also, sharpening the edge would remove the antirust layer anyway

  • I thought normal steel is still used in construction?

  • that is a vary interesting idea

  • the japanese have been making swords out of steel ages before those in England

  • I really like the mascots, but Prof. Martin is an absolute star.

    His energetic, enthusiasm is infectious.

Sir Martyn would be well deserved.

  • Fuck, he's right up in ma grilll !

  • I believe the professor helped me up a flight of stairs at Nottingham uni in the chemistry department a few years back, but I may be wrong haha!

  • hes so funny

  • Cast steel is an alloy of iron and carbon below 2% of carbon in it. Steel itself is made by mechanical processing of cast steel (rolling, forging etc.)

  • Can you please make a video about D3O and its molecular structure.

  • Brady do you record in 1080p or 1080i?

  • and what format do you use for the final output?

  • They should have been made of caesium, in my opinion. That would make the best opening ceremony ever.

  • @DocileBomb That would be a sight in the Olympic Swimming Pool!

  • @periodicvideos Either that, or someone replaces the Olympic Flame with magnesium ribbons.

  • that Olympic guy looks like Flubber's sibling

  • haha he said the thing about iron is that they just kept banging it and banging it.......haha thats what she said

  • But stainless steel sucks for swords, something about it being too expensive to harden properly. You need high carbon steel, and you have to oil it a lot, to prevent it from rusting.

  • hmmmm, professor the phallic nature of the mascot will be the main and probably only discussion ,but your innocent outlook on life warms a cynics heart .

  • I find it quite funny how he even has the Periodic Table on his coffee mug.

  • couldnt you name the video 'Steel'?

i got a bit confused with the title, until after i watched the video!

I was waiting for this alloy for quite a while! 5/5

  • @entoris476 Hi, I wouldn't say this was our definitive steel video, just something we did for fun when we heard about the mascots being made of steel... I expect we'll do more on steel soon.

  • Steel rules...

  • @Danthaman1971

...and it's good for the economy too!

  • what is the professor's actuall name so we can nominate him for a knighthood?

  • @crubba he has already be initiated into that society but not knight level yet.

  • @crubba It's Professor Martyn Poliakoff

Nominations can be sent to either The Prime Minister c/o 10 Downing St or The Queen c/o Buckingham Palace, London.

  • @periodicvideos Can Americans nominate you?

  • @crubba He's already a CBE, one level below a knighthood.

  • @crubba

    I love that idea!

  • lolcakes. SCIENCE IN MAH OLYMPICS!

  • Science is everywhere !

  • i thought the mascot for 2012 was lisa simpson giving head

  • I think you should do more videos about different steel alloys, this was great.

  • those mascots are stupid

  • The Professor's tie is pretty bad ass. I want one.

  • i thought brazil got the olympic

  • @vlvl21 2012 summer olympics are in london. Brazil got the next one.

  • horseshoe banging =p

  • Yay Neil!

  • He's got a knife!

  • @Craydon That's not a knife... it's a spoon.

  • I love these videos. You guys should make a full length movie on chemistry.

  • @LordNapalm

    Chemicals, the movie

At a theater close to you soon!..

  • At least they didnt choose a dog toy as mascott ;-)

  • Brilliant Tie, made out of chemicals

  • @Films4You

All ties are made out of chemicals ;)

  • @Danthaman1971

All chemicals are made out of ties ;)

    CHEMISTRYPUN!

  • @sliver321123

No, everything is made from twigs. Read up on twigonometry to get the details.

  • @Danthaman1971 Yes, most are hidden not like shown at 4:53 I think it's a great tie and very, very smart :)

  • @Films4You I fully agree!...

  • One eyed monsters... Argh Fe+Co

  • these videos make my day :D

  • anyony else here think they look like the "1 binomes" from Reboot?

  • Lol, taxi light, really?

  • The American mascot will be a donkey and an elephant which have been sewn together at the hips... All they'll be able to do is run around in circles while they yell at each other and stomp/kick an entire country into the ground.

  • @DG121480 HA! Classic comment - I laughed!!!

  • nice video... more like this would be nice, but more complex and in depth ! as an engineer metallurgy has always interested me though, so perhaps i'm bias

  • worst mascots EVER......sorry

  • Nice Tie!! :D

  • @NAMLegolas indeed! pretty cool!

  • Let's sink those Mascots inside a bloody beaker with HCl.

  • @Draxis32

    HCl? How about H2SO4?

  • @douro20 Hmm, not really dangerous to metal things, although is extremely hazardous to organic compounds I would rather pick HNO3.

Or if you can make it, HClO3 that would kick ass of any steel.

  • Second worst mascot: Izzy (1996 Atlanta)

Worst mascot: These two (2012 London)

Let's just hope the Brazilians (Rio?) have a better mind on the mascot(s). Amen.

  • @bullets0000 it seems that the Brazillian mascot will be a almost NAKED woman waring a thong....they seem to have the RIGHT IDEA!

  • I pity you people of London...........the Olympics are a scam. God bless!

  • @Downfacingdog How?

  • wow cool plus i love your hair doo lol

  • I love these vids keep it up :)

  • Interesting!!

  • Great video, great jesticulation :)

PS - visiting the university of nottingham soon - hope to see you there!

  • Should add that iron's not really 'Soft," but brittle. It actually has quite a high surface hardness, and that (along with the roughness that typically comes in castings) is why it's hard to machine. That's why cast iron is used in car engines, even in aluminium blocks, it doesn't wear out quickly. Only a few engines (like the Nissan GT-R and some new ford engines) use different metals for cylinder liners, but these are coated in superheated iron plasma spray.

  • Ah, Steel. Work with the stuff all the time in our Machine Shop. We use water and garnet to cut it!

  • nice

  • He starts so close :O. Giganto Professor.

  • One of the best vids yet.

  • I love this channel and the odd characters in that lab. With a good script it could be a sit-com. Pete's love for burning booming things is fun to watch. They even have an Igor who almost never speaks.

  • quite wicked:)

  • sword breaks. you got two swords! ya!!!

  • they look like pokemon to me...steel unkown....

  • Lol, he has the elements on his tie.

On one hand, he's trying too hard, on the other, I really want that tie.

  • @MarlonOwnsYourCake No, not to me. It just feels like a bad pretext to try to segway into Steel. I do however agree that it should be dropped and just stick to the steel itself.

Still, I liked this video, as with all (or most at any rate) the periodic, sixtysymbols, etc videos.

  • @MarlonOwnsYourCake I highly doubt that his intention is to draw people to sports. I do believe that it's quite the opposite: He is using an event everyone in the world can recognize in order to draw more attention to science and chemistry. If you regularly watch the periodicvideo channel you will notice he does this often.

  • @MarlonOwnsYourCake

Wow you sure are a downer. He doesn't talk down to people and he didn't 'incorporate science into the characters' he is just pointing out the features that the Olympic committee chose.

Go back under your bridge, troll.

  • they must be made from a mimetic poly alloy!

  • At he begging that was one heck of a close up of the professor.

  • Thanks Professor!

  • Shiny.

  • I thought Zink was mainly used for galvernization.

  • @RectumPilum it is. zinc is used to coat a metal (usually aluminium) which protects it by providing both a physical barrier and an electronic barrier.

adding carbon to iron toughens it and gives it slightly different properties. When other metals are added, this gives stainless steel which doesnt rust. these metals are added whilst everything is still molten to form an alloy, not a coating such as galvanizing.

  • @doggypills so you don't need to galvernize to make it rust free.

  • Coolest professor in the world :)

  • @rcmen231 i disagree, my HoD chem proffessor is cooler :P

  • When heard "in 2012", I almost went on anti-conspiracy-theory alert. ;)

I...have spent too much time debating those nuts...

  • proffesor #FTW

  • =('.')=

  • #LOL

  • Woo!! Go Steel. I love steel, making knives, and Blacksmithing!
