Anyone know approx. how fast they were moving? Maybe their approx. altitude? No offense, but if you don't know (aren't a pilot yourself or otherwise experienced) then don't answer.

@EmCeeSTD They were at all different altitudes. Their speed wouldn't have been particularly high, certainly not close to super sonic. I would expect that most of the time they would have been around 400 knots, sometimes more, sometimes less. :)

The chance is a lot smaller in those mountains and at sea, bcause there are less birds there.

I think the only bird you'll see in the mountains will be high above your plane, like eagles and such ;)

The fuselage is so wide, that it helps produce lift as well.

Once, an F-15 pilot collided with another plane, and flew back to base. He didn't even know he had only one wing until he got out and looked.

that is fucking insane.  My brother, stationed in England, used to fly F-15 VERY LOW over Scotland- it became an issue and they were ordered not to do it anymore ... but some still did now and again. This is how the tram wire was snipped and people fell to their deaths in Italy many years ago - US fighter jets flying low like this ....
