Yes Peter, about the orchestra; it is the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the concerto was recorded at the Moscow Conservatoire. Don't be annoyed about the coughing too much, just listen to Mr. Gilels and imagine that you are there, among the people in the audience, in that hall. Especially his live performances were a great experience, so I read.

wow. The orchestral acc is really well directed.Gilel is so heartfelt.never sappy or sentimental .Just the measure of aristocracyand directness Chopin deserves in his slow mov.Every bar is so right . I also heard many, many versions of this concerto, but to my opinion this is the best I ever heard. Clean, Majestic, soft and with dignity. Just as it should be. But also the orchestra is playing wonderfully. Who are they?

Why do people always cough at live recordings. Wouldn't you have the decency to not be in the hall if you have a bad cough. I never understood that!

i have been listening to chopin's work for 20 years and this recording sounds as if chopin played it himself. brilliant. the softness and emotion played here is superb, just superb. best recording i have heard by a mile.

so beautiful this piece...i cried. it's so tender and vulnerable, delicate like a broken heart. i love how gilels takes his time and produces such a sweet singing sound on all the high notes.

About the same time of this performance Gilels made a studio recording of this piece with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra which has always been my favorite recording. This live performance is equally as good pianistically, but of course the orchestra can't compare; Kondrashin, as always, was a superb collaborator.

Yes, with Ormandy it was recorded December 31 1964.

E. G. worked with some great foreign conductors -- Klemperer, Böhm, Karajan, Szell, Ormandy, Mehta, Jochum...

I prefer the live records -- when they are not too painstaking remastered.
