@threecardbrag I have been homeless, and the salvation army was not the only option. There are many other shelters and charities. Most of which have a much better reputation in regards to how they treat homeless people. It would be preferable for people to give their donations to that charity instead. You are portraying this as a choice between helping poor people or not helping poor people, which is a false choice fallacy.
At first I was shocked at some of the comments on here, but then I remembered it's Youtube. Anyway. This was an educational video. I've been doing some research and I definitely will NOT be donating to the Salvation Army. Next year I may actually approach one of the collector's and have a word or two.

Regarding Section 28 in Scotland, over 85% of the population supported it, so they were merely following what was also the view of the vast majority of the population. What The Salvation Army believes does not stand in the way of helping people in need. From its mission statement, "Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination." $.89 of every dollar goes to direct assistance of those in need. The Salvation Army is involved in helping those across the board, regardless of their sexual orientation or how they have sinned. You've obviously never been in need and asked The Salvation Army for help.

I have commented once before but The SA does not discriminate helping anyone for these reasons. Now there is a policy called "safe from harm" and due to this The SA has to be very careful in using people. Unfortunately there are people who wish to bad things to children.Another unfortunate truth is that this is more often true than not in the gay community. This is a Christian Church and organization so I am not sure why if you object you would care to be a part in the first place.
I will never again give to an organized charity. When my neighbor struggles to have regular meals and his old vehicle is failing fast, why should I give to an organized charity? Sometimes, he has to choose over repairing his very old vehicle, buying food, and getting his medication. As long as there is suffering, in my very tiny neighborhood, I will not donate to a charity. Everyone should look around them and see where you can help. Help neighbors, not organizations.

he Salvation Army has many shortcomings. I myself have become a ' victim ' of Salvationists purporting to be Christians too, so can understand why some people are 'anti'. The salvation army aims to help anyone in need, no matter what race, sexuality, religion ect. I am not defending everyone in the salvation army, as Im sure life has taught us, not everyone is perfect and yes, I am sad to say that the minority of the salvation army do carry these beliefs, however many of us are excepting to anyone. Yes, the acts SA have passed in the past are horrible but we are changing, as we continue to change we hope to change a number of lives too. <3

Okay one the Salvation army is mostly know for the bell ringers it's for the clothing store and for helping people two have you ever been to the army because if you did you wouldn't say stupid stuff and would actually know about it. An hour later they were talking about how all gays were going to hell. The fact that they could start a conversation the way they did, then end it on the note they did, shows how incapable people in general are at seeing their own hypocrisies. I always find it refreshing to meet people who don't judge :-)

How many gay charitys are helping the poor? While I feel the Salvation Army is not a good charity because they use mostly government funds and than have to abide by the governments standards which are not realistic. We need help in this country not over sees hello are you not seeing this? we are in this country not in other countrys. There are very little charitys out there to begin with to help the poor. The ones that do are Christian churches. Where are the nonreligous charitys?
@34sunbun, actually, on the local level, the Salvation Army Corps receive almost NO federal or state government funds. we receive up to 11-13% of our Annual budget from the United Way, which has almost HALF of its budgets met with federal grants... and THAT money we use only for feeding the hungry and sheltering the poor and homeless, never for church related functions.
so technically, we are a church that receives NO government funds.
you need to get some perspective, The Salvation army has its flaws like any organisation, and in the end people are only human. you cannot tell me that you have not made mistakes in your life and that you have not stuffed up, so what makes the people who run the salvation army any different. just because we are Christians does not make us impervious to stuffing up, it just meas that the spotlight falls on us when we to because they love to see us fall.

i have to say that you have a very narrow view of the Salvation Army, you only experience the American Salvation Army, not the whole world view, that is so narrow minded, also the whole same sex union issues etc you know that a Christian church is going to have that view, and any Christian church that doesn't have that view is not follow what the Bible says. I work for the Salvation Army in Australia in schools working with at risk children and children who need mentoring.
The end of The Salvation Army Mission statement says- "to meet human needs in Jesus name without discrimination."
Note the last two words. The Salvation Army has always served homosexuals in need in an attitude of love. They also hire homosexuals, just not in evangelistic or Christian Ministry positions.
The thought that The Salvation Army should forgo it's religious freedoms to receive support from the govt. is discrimination.
Salvation army does not discriminate against homosexuality they welcome any one from any where and will not tell you that you that you shouldn't be actively gay. Salvation Army is the most recognized sign in the world and also one of the most respected.

The specific event referenced in this video was about govt. support. The govt. was requiring The Salvation Army to give benefits to domestic partners. The Salvation Army struggled with this decision, not wanting to endorse homosexuality, but also not wanting to reject them as people. The "threat" to shut down all of it's programs was really a plea for continued govt. support. Without it, The Salvation Army would not be able to keep them open.

If the salvation army is more concerned with it's own religious ideology than helping the poor, then they are of no use as a charity, and they shouldn't be considered primarily a charity. Hopefully the government will eventually learn to not bother investing in religious charities.

Most of which have a much better reputation in regards to how they treat homeless people. It would be preferable for people to give their donations to that charity instead. I have commented once before but The SA does not discriminate helping anyone for these reasons. Now there is a policy called "safe from harm" and due to this The SA has to be very careful in using people. Unfortunately there are people who wish to bad things to children.Another unfortunate truth is that this is more often true than not in the gay community. I will never again give to an organized charity. When my neighbor struggles to have regular meals and his old vehicle is failing fast, why should I give to an organized charity? Sometimes, he has to choose over repairing his very old vehicle, buying food, and getting his medication. As long as there is suffering, in my very tiny neighborhood, I will not donate to a charity. Everyone should look around them and see where you can help. Help neighbors, not organizations.

Also - never buy a War cry - 10% goes to their divisional headquarters for admin, 30% to pay for the printing of the paper and 60% to pay for the running costs (heating and lighting and ministers salary) of their local Corps (church building).

For me anyway, donating to charity should be about making a difference and helping those who need it. If you want to give because you think you can help or you can spare something, then do it, to the salvation army or anywhere for that matter. Statistics and better options shouldnt even come down to it, charity isn't about that, the money does the exact same thing everywhere - IT HELPS. I am not defending everyone in the salvation army, as Im sure life has taught us, not everyone is perfect and yes, I am sad to say that the minority of the salvation army do carry these beliefs, however many of us are excepting to anyone. Yes, the acts SA have passed in the past are horrible but we are changing, as we continue to change we hope to change a number of lives too. <3

Okay one the Salvation army is mostly know for the bell ringers it's for the clothing store and for helping people two have you ever been to the army because if you did you wouldn't say stupid stuff and would actually know about it. @Jos208to713 I hear you - they shouldn't. But sadly most the ones I've met do. I had a conversation w/ an old christian couple & the conversation started with how it was wrong to judge. An hour later they were talking about how all gays were going to hell. The fact that they could start a conversation the way they did, then end it on the note they did, shows how incapable people in general are at seeing their own hypocrisies. I always find it refreshing to meet people who don't judge :-)

How many gay charitys are helping the poor? While I feel the Salvation Army is not a good charity because they use mostly government funds and than have to abide by the governments standards which are not realistic. We need help in this country not over sees hello are you not seeing this? we are in this country not in other countrys. There are very little charitys out there to begin with to help the poor. The ones that do are Christian churches. Where are the nonreligous charitys?

@34sunbun, actually, on the local level, the Salvation Army Corps receive almost NO federal or state government funds. we receive up to 11-13% of our Annual budget from the United Way, which has almost HALF of its budgets met with federal grants... and THAT money we use only for feeding the hungry and sheltering the poor and homeless, never for church related functions.
so technically, we are a church that receives NO government funds.

you need to get some perspective, The Salvation army has its flaws like any organisation, and in the end people are only human. you cannot tell me that you have not made mistakes in your life and that you have not stuffed up, so what makes the people who run the salvation army any different. just because we are Christians does not make us impervious to stuffing up, it just meas that the spotlight falls on us when we to because they love to see us fall.

i have to say that you have a very narrow view of the Salvation Army, you only experience the American Salvation Army, not the whole world view, that is so narrow minded, also the whole same sex union issues etc you know that a Christian church is going to have that view, and any Christian church that doesn't have that view is not follow what the Bible says. I work for the Salvation Army in Australia in schools working with at risk children and children who need mentoring.

The end of The Salvation Army Mission statement says- "to meet human needs in Jesus name without discrimination."
Note the last two words. The Salvation Army has always served homosexuals in need in an attitude of love. They also hire homosexuals, just not in evangelistic or Christian Ministry positions.
The thought that The Salvation Army should forgo it's religious freedoms to receive support from the govt. is discrimination.

The specific event referenced in this video was about govt. support. The govt. was requiring The Salvation Army to give benefits to domestic partners. The Salvation Army struggled with this decision, not wanting to endorse homosexuality, but also not wanting to reject them as people. The "threat" to shut down all of it's programs was really a plea for continued govt. support. Without it, The Salvation Army would not be able to keep them open.

@kjhboyd In other words, the salvation army wants a special exemption from the law. If the salvation army is more concerned with it's own religious ideology than helping the poor, then they are of no use as a charity, and they shouldn't be considered primarily a charity. Hopefully the government will eventually learn to not bother investing in religious charities.

(Rom 5:8) We are forgiven of our sin but as His people, must live holy lives. “Go, and sin no more." (John 8:11). The devil had me programmed to die of an overdose in the gutter. Christ and the Salvation Army saved me from slow suicide and eternity in hell. Homosexuality is a sin, but as one of God's people, I in no way hate gay people.
