  • aren't these the last surviving auto union racecars?

  • This is a very "dull" video. =p

  • super cool video, very very nice , very impressive thank you .

  • Type C (5) and D (4) are originals and Type A (1) is a replica, right?

  • Great video and cool sound. Many comments on the vehicles and the history of Auto Union. Some of the comments were way off. Auto Union was made in 1932 as a result of the hard times in the world at the time. It was made "on" 4 car companys: Horch, Wanderer, Audi and DKW. All 4 companies were based in Sachsen/Saxony Germany. But at the time of the merger DKW had control over AUDI. DKW got that control in 1928, where DKW took over AUDI. Best regards Jan/DK
  • i wonder what the run time on those older race tire's were?

it couldnt have been very long

as the torque of those engine's really used them up quick.

  • sounds from the hell...bazmeg

  • wow not bad for a 70 year old car! it sounds just killer

  • Great video.Love seeing the vintage stuff.

  • But Ferrari rated Nuvolari with the gods. No mere human ever beat them.

  • no.21 won the french Gp and came 2'nd in the belgian GP......i dont think they ever recovered no.21 though!

  • Ossie power......so wie es gehoert!!

  • Type C's acceleration in 3:15 and 4:29 ... BLAST!!!

And I love how Tom Kristensen drove it. No fear + full throttle :)

  • Pls some one make a new V16 race. Not sure if a sixteen cyl racer would be FIA legal these days lol... So the Hell with it make it Nurburgring trackcar. That seems to be more exciting than a lot or racing series these days esp since eveyrbody gonna end up adopting the NASCAR approach making all cars the same.

  • 'no one was able to beat them' Tazio Nuvolari, german gp

  • monster sound !

    *

  • which type is the car with number 5 on her? she sounds the best!

  • Best engine sounds EVER!!!!

  • number 5 sounds like a exotic muscle tuner

  • @CTBTRIPPLE123 Yeah it sounds wonderful...

  • Those V-16's are SICK! I've read that they're capable of 200 mph...

  • If driven correctly, you will be rewarded.

  • Wow, that little Type A is not the prettiest Silver Arrow but it sure sounds the best...like a howling banshee!

  • How many cilinders has the typa A, it has a different sound

  • @ytrsyt Type A has 16 cylinders. Sick! The first ones were 4.4 liter, supercharged, making 295 Hp. Doesn't sound like much, but the sound! Type C was 6.1 liters with 520 Hp.

  • Shell history of motorsport is the best footage ever and hard to get but worthwhile!

  • OMG ! ive died and gone to heaven ! the sound oh! the sound !

  • id hate to be the guy to put one of those pieces of artwork and engineering into the wall...

  • BMW does not have one of these in your museum!

  • mich würde mal der cw-wert von den dingern interessieren

  • Which type is the car that has no number on the body?

  • Type A

  • Total Hot Rods!

  • I saw a documentry about an auto union silver arrow going to america not sure if the car was sold or just taken there for display purpose's...but it was said that during world war 2 many of the surviving examples were hidden from the nazi's....they would have killed to get there hands on them like they did with all the priceless art...Two of the Cars look to be mid-engined can anyone elaborate on this...regards Nidge...

  • 2 words: massive power!

  • seen these at goodwood a few years ago and the sound and sight of these on the move is nothing short of spectacular! cross plys and drum brakes ftw!

  • mother of god they sound beautiful

  • Auto Union, real race cars !

  • I have auto union 65

    i like a silver harrows

  • visit my site you tube

    autounion1965

    your videos was greath

  • What V8 would that be, actually? Non of these three cars is V8-powered. These Auto Unions are a V16 Typ A, a V16 Typ C and a V12 Type D...

  • Beautiful video!!! You can hear the V8 sounding larger than life in the beginning! I'm sorry to say, but the V12 sounds kind'a weak in comparison. Ich möchte keine Germane beleidigen aber V8 ist das schöenste was es gibt!

    V8

  • Awesome! Thanks

  • No wings, traction control or paddle gear change back then!

  • @asd36f

More importantly no roll bars, and just look at those skinny tires! :O

  • Stig was first ;D

  • The 16-cylinder Typ C sounds like hell is about to happen, Monstrous

  • Emozionante in video figuriamoci dal vivo!!!

  • In my Opinon, the most beautiful race cars of the Era.

  • awesuum cars <3

  • we have Hitler to thank for these cars at least he did something wright for humanity as hard as that is to be-leave

  • Beautiful cars!!!!

  • holy crap that was the most amazing automotive video I have ever seen *bow*

    when cars where MACHINES

  • Epic. The engine sounds at 2:16. What I would've given to be there.

  • How "futuristic" they are! grat video with a great sound, thanks!

  • Wow, what a great day that must have been to see and hear three race car legends together more than 70 years after they retired from racing. And finally a YouTube video with great sound! Good job, really. I'm thinking of editing the best parts together to compile a phone ringtone which sends shivers down the spine ;-).

  • "all the luck" as much as I would love to go back in time and race these things, you might as well be a suicide bomber. The drivers back then had NO LUCK not like the SHITTY NASCAR drivers of today, and yes I am asking for trouble so any redneck nascar fans can message me back!

  • I'm a NASCAR hater too. I wouldn't mind it so much if the races were A LOT shorter, like maybe 100 laps TOPS, and no more than 50 on road courses. I'm a die hard F1 fan though, and there are basically no other people who like F1 here in America.

  • Laptop? We don't need no stinking laptop to start REAL cars!

  • Brutal, brilliant Beauties!

  • Hi all. Where can I see these monsters ??

  • 4:55 - 5:08 is fantastic

  • Sick dogs!! Those are real racing cars cars. And they mean business. And to think that the drivers were getting paid to take these cars out for a spin!! Some guys get all the luck..

  • 3:10 I blew my load...

  • oh damn, I wish he opened it up through 2nd, that noise is freaking amazing!

  • 1;10 sound like a pit dog

  • NOw that really is the sound of thunder! Amazing film, thank you so much.

  • 3:15, so evil sounding.

  • alfa romeo le ha battute....

  • True supercars. Awesome engine sound. Five stars off course

  • Beautiful vehicles!

could anyone tell me what the song at the beginning of the video is? i'm having trouble placing it, but it sounds very familiar.

  • Deeper Underground by Jamiroquai.

  • that type d firing up could be the sickest start up ever recorded

  • These cars are amazing! Back in the day they could almost hit 300 mph. and the engine note is amazing.

  • 300?

  • the auto union typ c is able to drive 340 kmh

  • The streamlined version i believe he means.

  • 250 mph

  • Correction, 257 mph!

  • Awesome sounds, and a great tribute to German automotive excellence. Thanks so much for posting! True pieces of racing history.

  • I've seen this about a dozen times but it still chokes me up somehow.

  • Beautiful machines. Its simply amazing what the Auto Union built in the 1930s

  • wow...........

  • They must have been difficult to handle with those skinny tires.

  • I've seen lot's of old photos in magazines and VERY little motion footage of these cars. I always thought the the cars were HUGE in size.

In this video they don't look so big. That engine roar is so cool

  • there it has a what seems a lion roaring

  • In this city, these cars were built!!

  • actually the others can i think it's theone that was auctioned in paris that is extremely rare

  • i highly doubt those r the real things? there's like 5 known to b in existence today and no one knws wher 3 of them are

  • that sound is awesome and filmin' really good! who ever posted this, thank you!

    INCREDIBLE MACHINES!!!

  • These cars were 70 years ahead of their time. Especially the V16(Not in this video). I don't think most people watching these videos know just how well these vehicles from the 1930s could perform even way back then. I swear, aliens must have given the Auto Union guys some secret technology.

  • The number 5 is a C Type V16,and for the secrets,it was surely not aliens,but Ferdinand Porsche ;-)

  • NOT aliens, Herr Ferdinand PORSCHE. Hitler finally turned to Herr Porsche for the beetle design as the BIG car builders of the time thought the idea of a "peoples car" to be ludicrous. They were WRONG.

The VW beetle, by definition, was the GREATEST motercar EVER built. Cheap, reliable, economical, repairable, durable, versatile. The moter has even been used for aircraft. No car in history was tested and developed to the level the "bug" was.

    RIP little beetle!

  • The best cars of the history.

  • Those cars are works of pure beauty.

  • those cars are so BEYOND FANTASTIC!!real cars! nice movie!

  • motors sound like jungle cats

  • ...It's just to fuck'n much..... Guess I would have piss my pants

  • Rolling starts would have suited these cars well...

  • If the devil drove a car, thats what it would sound like !. Along with BRM V16, the best sounds in racing history !!!!.

  • Best sounding racecar ever

  • i kinda cried when i heard that engines for the first time..

  • same

  • I wonder how many modern day supercars these could beat.

  • what a privelage it must have been to be there! FANTASTIC!

  • Those are some wierd cars, hard to believe those where the best race cars at one point.

  • Oh they still are fast enough, believe me.

I'm sure you can outdrive a Lamborghini LP640 on various circuits, even on these tyres.

If you have the skills to keep this in control that is.

  • most perfect sound!

  • Lead car and Last car sound amazing

  • A Legend

  • you can see that car in real life, in Rigas Motormuseum, Latvia...

  • hot damn, sounds like pure evil! Kinda fitting, I guess, considering How Hitler and the Nazis funded these cars to promote German technology.

  • Don't forget that Auto Union was formed by 4 companies, that were denied government funding, and almost went bust, because of the Nazi's.

  • these were a beast to handle rear wheel driver massive horsepowers!

  • what engine is in the one that took off first?

the sort of high pitched one?v12/v16?

  • Its a V16 - just awesome

  • Alfa Romeao beat them....

  • Alfa Romeo see this cars only from the back.

  • Alfa only occasionally beat these, and only with Tazio Nuvolari. Without Totz, they didn't have a snowball's.

  • these cars are motoring perfection in the most perfect sense, why bother with modern f1? when you could just listen to these all day, plus they're alot better looking.

just watching this video gets me excited lol

  • I totally agree. Completely amazing. The sound is unreal.

  • I have the goose-pimples from the exciting sound!

  • Totally agree with CaliforniaBob!

The Silver Arrows were the best.

  • Looked like Tom Kristensen was having some problems with his car. As far as I can see it Tom Kristensen driving the left-front car (on the grid) and Allan McNish driving the left-back car. The last guy seems to be an unknown driver, as his helmet is plain white...

  • The Stig

  • CHRIST!!!! what a sound these cars make!!

  • I would have preferred those drivers to have worn the period cloth hats and goggles rather than contemporary crash helmets. Other than that I appreciate listening to those magical beastly sounds. One of those cars seemed remarkably responsive too.

  • By 'responsive' I mean eager to accelerate.

  • My wife's uncle when he was in the Hitler Youth was taken to the ring in the 30's to watch these racing

  • Fantastic sounds!! In my opinion, what makes the

drivers of these cars, in the 1930s, so outstanding is that they had to put 500-600 horsepower to the ground through 6" wide tires!

1934 - 1939 was truly the best of times for racing.

Now I am going into my garage and stare at my Mercedes and Audi sitting side by side. My wife's Audi license plate is "PWAGEN". Do you know what that stands for?

    Thanks for the great video.

  • Yes and imagine the brakes....

Look at the size of the steering wheels...

These cars required enormous effort to drive.

  • I wonder what these cars are worth...

  • Hey TF964 -

Saw this post while enjoying this clip. Went to NYC when Park Avenue Audi had the one that was supposed to be auctioned last year for around 15mil but was found to not be the one they thought it was. You could probably get a loaded Gulstream 5 for these three? I have nice pics if interested. Also selling a primo '73 914 2.0 in silver.

    Best - Kevin

  • Oh my god. So awesome.

  • vui geile autos

san jo imma hin a deitsche autos =)

  • My bands called auto4union!I had to put the "4" in for copyright reasons!Cool name though eh!

  • one of the drivers was tom kristensen.

7 times Le Mans winner and DTM driver for Audi.

  • My dad was the driver of #5

  • so you dad was i car 5 so what make is so special to drive a auto union car.. and who was the other two drivers with him

  • Genau, dein Vater fährt den Wagen, und du weißt auch wo die da gefahren sind und wer genau...

Das kannst du gerne erzählen, sag mir erstmal wo genau das war, dann werde ich dir sagen wer an dem Tag gefahren ist!

  • i came

  • sticky tires

  • great video, love the sound of a v 16 with a couple of roots blowers, would have loved to hear at full speed on the autobahn back in the day with Bert Rosemeyer kicking Mercedes asses!

  • What can you say about such a classic racecar that makes such a beautiful noise. Why must you bring negativity into these comments lostinbeltway. I'm a devoted BMW addict and its irratating to hear people treat their opinions as facts, you have no basis for your claim that Audi is any better than Mercedes or BMW. All three are desirable in their own way ,cant we give all three the billing they deserve?

  • i love these cars

anyone know of a company that makes models that I could make of the Type C and D.

  • just listening to these is like sex

  • What GLORIOUS sounds!!

  • Boy, they sure did make a lot of noise! I wonder if the drivers, Nuvolari, Rosemeyer, etc, suffer fron hearing problems. I have models of these cars and one of the record breakers, so it was interesting to hear what they sounded like.

  • Stunning!.In 1932 Audi merged with Horch,DKW and Wanderer to become Auto Union.Hitler proposed a competition between Auto Union and Mercedes Benz (with their W124 & then the amazing W154) to create the ultimate in racing cars. However Hitlers' political ambitions created sanctions against Germany, including any International racing against the, soon to be,Axis forces.Mercedes Benz may have been allocated more money by the Fuhrer, but which engine layout does a modern F1 car use?

  • you can thank Cooper for bringing rear engined cars to F1, Ferrari even persisted in having a front engined car in 1960 when everybody had realized that rear engined cars were the future after Cooper's titles in 1959.

Look at Jim Clark's Lotus at Indianapolis in 1963 compared to the clumsy Indy roadsters. His car looked like it was from another planet.

  • Ferrari was always loathe to change from tradition. They also stuck with drum brakes and wire wheels longer than everyone else, too.

  • yes, Enzo Ferrari himself was quoted of saying "aerodynamics is for those who can't build engines". Sounds like some narrowminded conservative fool to me.

Seriously Formula 1 would have never evolved from the 1950's had only Ferrari and others like them been around.

What about the monoque(Lotus 25 from 1962),the engine as a stressed member of the chassis(Lotus 49 from 1967) the ground effect with Lotus 78? Fuel injection? Mercedes.Wings? Wedge shape aero(Lotus 72). Ferrari pioneered shit.

  • I wouldn't call him a narrow minded fool, just hesitant to take risks when he was already winning. Certainly hasn't hurt the Ferrari legacy.

  • Maybe Ferrari "pioneered shit" as you say, but consider that pioneering means nothing if you aren't able to develop new solutions.

Consider that Ferrari (who won most of them all, right?), a few hundred people company that sold 100-200 cars per year in 50's and 60's, beat giants like Ford, who had much, much more budget to make r&d. It would mean something, or not?

  • Lotus was not the first ground effect car... a mythos Lotus had build up. The first ground effect race car was the Auto Union stream liner of 1938 in which Bernd Rosemeyer died at 270mph during the Rekordwochen at the A5.

  • Just remember, that was during a time of "real" racing innovation. There were no two cars that were alike such as today.

  • you can thank a little ENGLISH ENGINEERING COMPANY CALLED CROSSTHWAITE AND GUARDNER FOR THESE BEING IN EXISITANCE, AND AMERICAN THAT RISKED LIFE AND LIMB TO OBTAIN THE ORIGINALS.

  • The 80's were a great time for Audi,Are you crazy? Just because they weren't selling in the US does not mean they were not good cars. They were the best cars of their time, maybe overpriced, but perfection always is.... Capitalism is not the basis for substance.

  • I second that. I guess, people saying that Audi was not successful in 80s, haven't heard of the 'Quatrro'. It was success on the track and on the road. Audi is better than BMW and Benz, anyday.

  • It is unbelievable what the autounion people got on the racetracks in that early years of grand prix races. And after poor seventies and eighties of the last century today audi is getting back a kind of the old spirit with dream cars like the R8.

  • vw beetle suspension

  • Man and machine, back when a man was a man and a smoke was a smoke.

  • c pas la f1 d'aujourd'hui mais le bruit est fantastique la conduite n'est pas des plus facile ce qui doit donner un plaisir hors du commun

  • I love those monsters:)

  • the guy in #5 is stupid he drives too agresive such an old and original car , what if he destroyed the engine or crashed it

  • He's nowhere near the limit of the car, it's a restored racecar I'm quite sure it can take the beating...

  • ok but there are no parts for this cars and you can't compare original parts with non original , I mean if the skin is dameged what do you do you make another , that's what I'm talking about that metal in 80 years old , original but i gues that they were made to be raced so whatever , they sound fantastic especiali the C model

  • The aluminium of which these cars were made are such high-quality that it would still be near perfect, you just got to polish it, but that makes it weaker since you take away the alumina layer which protects the aluminium from oxidizing.

But these cars are replica's built by Crosthwaithe & Gardiner AFAIK.

  • Only 2 are replicas

  • That engine is very tough, and the car is a Grand Prix car, it's made for trashing it around.
