This takes me back to the summer of '72...great memories. Heard some really BAD news today...Rob Grill passed away. This group was always very underrated. Rest In Peace Rob, you will never be forgotton by your fans!
I saw them in Cleveland last week. It had a bunch of older guys in the band, but not Rob Grill. The two times before, Grill was there with a backup band of younger people. I read that he had a stroke. Is he retired? Are the older guys his old band-mates now rejoined?
@jwmellott Rob did not have a stroke. However he has a bone disease which causes him a great deal of pain and he has been through numerous surgeries. He makes a few appearances with the band but for the most part, The Grass Roots is made up of the same guys that have been with him for close to 25 years plus his hand pick successor, Mark Dawson. But the Grass Roots is fully owned 1oo pct by Rob and he does do an occasional gig esp in FL.
Grass Roots. Best Songs are RUNWAY and GLORY BOUND! Listen to them back to back and you'll see. I love all the stuff they did. A real American Treasure!
I got this recording on a CD-3 back about 1988 which contained three other hits including "Temptation Eyes" ; "Where Were You When I Needed You" and "Midnight Confessions". MCA released a limited number of CD-3s back then and yes I still have it.
You relaize this song is a dual lead between Warren Entner and Rob... Warren sings the first half of the verses, and Rob sings the last half of the verses and the chorus.
@garageband66 ..because all their songs were written by the label,,they were "created" much like bands these days are created...with many personel changes.
that said they were very talented in all their formulations
Thanks again for posting this. This is my all time favorite group. I've been a fan for 38-39 years. These songs bring back so many great memories. Keep up the great work.
I looked up the Grass Roots and we're both wrong. They had two more chart hits after 'The Runway' and 'Glory Bound.' 'Love Is What You Make It' and 'Mamacita,' though neither cracked the top 40. I don't remember them but I might if I heard them.
I was considering top 40 entries but yes I have heard both of the cuts and by far Love Is What You Make It was the better cut and deserved a better fate. That song came out about the same time as Annabella by The Walker Brothers and Don't Pull Your Love or another Hamilton, Joe, Frank, and Reynolds chart entry and the airwaves were cluttered with that particular sound. All of those entries sounded like the same group, so I guess they got lost in the shuffle.
garageband66, your right, this song definetly didn't get the recognition it deserved. this song didn't chart very well if my memory serves me well. I have this one on there greatest hits compilation on cd. These guys totally rocked back in the day. Thanx again!!!
Melinda Love if my memory serves me correctly was the 45 flip side of Heaven Knows and I'd venture to say thunderbird1958 probably has it. I'll see if he can put it up.
melinda love has allways been one of my favorite roots songs. i still have my "leaving it all behind" album. it would be great to see video of them doing it! but i dought that exists!
It probably doesn't and I imagine the members themselves won't have recollection of it or access to it. I'd like to put something together on it but I have alot on my plate at the moment. Barely have enough time lately to keep up with the comments. Isn't funny how life gets in the way of the things we truly enjoy?
I did sadly at a state fair in 75 at the end of their original run. They were great but you could tell by their mannerisms there was some friction in the band.
Yep, summer '72 still one of the greatest I've ever had, It's hard to believe they had only 2 top 10 hits, they were so much better than that.

I'll always associate this song with the movie "Frogs." They both came out in the summer of 1972: "Today the pond... tomorrow the world!"

@charliedontsurf70 Thanks for noticing. Being a lyricist and a Language Arts teacher, I kind of have an ear for words and images, I guess.

They do not get a lot of props for their body of work by critics or musicians but you have to respect their chart success.

Love this song, used to have the 45.
Now if someone would only post 'Glory Bound'! That is such a great song. It might have been their next to last chart song, before this one.
