  • simple . class act ,where are they now#

  • I feel like he's one of the very few performers/singers who are able to make us feel sad for a cloud :/ His voice is so genuine with emotion and thought.

  • CINESCOPIO

  • Does anyone have a video performance of Johnny Ray singing his biggest hit, "Cry"?

  • ATTENTION ALL KIDS, and those of you under 25. This is called MUSIC. There is also a SINGER. Something missing from your music.

  • @rippleway123 I've heard that Rick James, who did "Superfreak," said that "Rap is what happens when you end music education."

  • @LeftCoast Mejor dicho, cuando el oído cae en la degradación más absoluta. En mi opinión.

  • @rippleway123 Way to stick it to people watching a youtube video...why dont you go jerk off to a Johnny Mathis album, at least then we dont need to know you are making yourself feel good about yourself

  • MAJOR, MAJOR TALENT AND SOUL. AN ORIGINAL. RIP JOHNNY.

  • This guy was real cool, not like made for tv/internet cool today

  • this looks like a lip-sync job.

  • @redtimmy No, he's not lip-syncing. The video is from a kinescope, the audio is from a magnetic tape recording of the same program, hence the disparity between the good quality sound and the relatively poor quality image. Also, the audio might be a micro-second out-of-sync, but you'll notice when he fiddles with the mike, the little bumps are audible.

  • 1952 it was on the top of the hits, number 18 actually. So the video is probably from then. I love this, and always have, then discovered it was my Mums fav, and I was born in the same year. Perhaps she listened to it often and it grew on me!

  • This is one of the first pop songs I remember. One day, my mother was driving home in the rain, I was laying down with my head on her leg, and she began to sing this song. I started crying; she thought I was sick. I explained I was crying because I just felt so sorry for the poor little cloud.

  • i cant believe i just found him, fantastic

  • he is better than i thought. love the timbre of his voice.

  • i remember him with such great memories in my teenage years

  • it's people like Johnnie that makes me carry on making music whenever i have doubts about myself

    long live deaf musicians

check out my stuff people!!! i'm deaf too =]

  • All I can say..dayum..wish I was old enough to have known him...his voice is so sexy and you dont hear this kind of music anymore...the world lost a great "crooner" when he left us!

  • GREAT

  • @Emmzy22 I bet you can sing this just as good

  • @carpetsign I am Emmzy22, just a different account. Could you remind me, what was my original comment?

  • @carpetsign I am Emmzy22, I can't sing at all

  • @Emmzy22 i agree, absolutely brilliant. can you do as good?

  • Brilliance!!

  • @theDeckisStacked If you're going to flash in the pan, then 'Cry' is certainly the way to do it. The man paved the way for rock'n roll. Show a little respect.

  • Stunning live performance, others had their imitators but there was only one Johnnie Ray

  • Johnny Ray was a great deal deaf! What makes his singing even more amazing. You can see the monster of a hearing aid he had to wear in this video!

  • @theDeckisStacked He was no flash in the pan. He moved to England and performed throughout Europe and back in the states for many years. He made a permanent mark on music - blues, jazz, pop singing. Even the Queen of England called for him after Cry broke. I read his bio. He paid his dues to have what he did.

  • The 1st and earliest song I remember hearing as a child. It was on the radio. You can see how it would catch a child's attention. I remember Cry too. Then saw him often on the early age of tv entertainment variety shows.

the Deck is stacked-- he was no flash in the pan. He moved to England. Read a bio about him (I am from Oregon) and even the Queen wanted to see him after Cry. No he performed a long long time. He had a charisma and soul. He also paid his dues to have what he got.

  • 1956

  • When my mom took her nap I would put Little White Cloud and Cry on the phonograph. I wish she was here to see this video :-)

  • He wore a hearin,g since the age of 14, according to the book Rock & Roll Year by Year (Crampton & Rees).

  • Hi

A few weeks ago, I started to remember this song by Johnnie Ray. I first heard this song when it originally came out way back when. I was not much into entertainment of any kind, but that song and "cry" have remained in my memory. That maybe a coincidence because my friends said that I looked like the great " Johnnie Ray" He was a great entertainer. I wish I knew more about him

    Maury

  • This is my favorite song and singer now,,, thank you for posting it and thanks for the lift,, we all need this kind of wonderfully written and sung music! God Bless!!!

  • I watched There's No Business, Like show Business a few days ago, which is was part of the distribution and this guy had a style of his own. What a joy to see these wonderful artists in their glory days. Wonderful!

  • This is the very first time I ever heard "the Little White Cloud that Cried",, but knowing one or two of Johnny Ray's songs, I was absolutely sure, it would be very good,,, and sure enough,, it was,,, and I started to cry,,, wonderful man, wonderful heart, thanks Johnny, and thanks for posting music that makes you feel life, love, pain and joy!!! God bless!

  • What a lovely, smooth & dreamy voice...I'd never heard of him until today...Just grand...grand!

  • thank you for posting this.

  • Grande.

  • if he was bald would it matter

  • There's only one thing wrong with the man. Back in the 50s putting stuff on men's hair abounded. The one I remember was "Brylcreem." The man's hair looks pasted in the back. Nevertheless he is one talent of the greatest singers in the last 60 years.

  • I saw him in concert in Brisbane ,Australia in the 50's.I've never forgotten how amazing he was. Lovely memories.

  • damn he's good!! wow!

  • My mum really loved this guy. She still does & you can see why. He opened so many doors & was way before his time. Unfortunately his insecurities & self doubt got the better of him. Without him there would be no Rock 'n' Roll &, dare I say it, he paved the way for the likes of Elvis (lets not forget that "Such a Night" was banned for its sexual content)! Johnnie should be put up there with the all time greats!!

  • Simply gorgeous! I remember how much my mom liked him and this song would make her tear up. What great quality of this video!

  • Theres several covers of this song on youtube, but Rays original stands above every one of them.

  • @jmen4ever I don't know the other covers, but I can well believe that this one is the best. What a wonderful performer, talent and heard combined. I will look for more of his work.

  • A TALENT beyond compare... the metaphor is well received @ the Little White Cloud... THANK YOU FOR THE REMINDER!!!!!!! God Bless, wherever YOU are.....

  • Handsome looking young man. Great voice.

  • Comment removed

  • And to think he was partly deaf! Incredible!!

  • Beautifull, Thank's for sharing

  • This is the version I don't really remember, I did know of Johnny Ray, but I didn't know he sang this song. I knew him for his "Just Walkin' in the Rain" & "Walking my Baby Back home". This may be an unusual love song, where Johnnie is singin' of a little white cloud but it's so bueatiful. Five stars, for this classic & thx4 postin'

  • The difference between Johnnie Ray and a ham is a ham can be cured.

  • My grandfather used to sing this song to me when I was young. I've always loved it! The one song I've never heard originally done (until now) but always know the words.

  • one of the greatest singers of all time

    frankie di nunzio

    hershey,pa.

  • great song sung by great singer god bless

  • I heard this song first on happy days & Loved it, later as I heard & learned of older music from my Dad I also found out that Jonnie Ray was a Native American that lost his hearing in his right ear at the age of 13 The crap on American Idol don't cut it for me if these younger generation kids wanna be singers they should look to the Classic singers like Jonnie Ray,Frank Sinatra,Elvis Presley,Frankie Ford & others that realy can sing with no dubbing & Bending notes where not needed

  • i never thought i was going to see johnny in the peak of his carree in a video with such good tune , wouuu this guy was unique god bless you johnny

  • Fuckin sing it brother,Johnnie had inner turmoil,to add to his voice.

  • Like him or loathe him, JR could certainly sell a song!

  • I believe it's from the Netherlands 1958 according to other clips on YT

  • No wonder everyone went crazy for this legendary singer...such passionate depth of feeling taking the listener to the heart & soul of a song...so moving to watch and those tones and that unique phrasing are perfection...Bravo Johnnie and you are missed!!!

  • So deeply soulful & brilliant...Johnnie needs induction in to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame...what gives? Johnnie is a trailblazing groundbreaker who rocked out with the blues before Elvis...Bravo Johnnie!!!

  • Immense talent but I perceive a man at war with himself. Neverthless it would be a hard part to find a person, a talent, of his equal. Though he is no longer in the world as long as his songs are played & sung by him Johnnie Ray will live on.

  • My very favorite song by Mr Ray. Someday I'll do my rendition when I get up the nerve.

  • I love him.

  • They should make a movie about the very intriguing life of Johnny Ray. He had a voice that stirs memories, a very unique talent.

  • hermosa letra de esta cancion en verdad te hace llorar

  • hermosa letra de esta cancion en verdad te hace llorar

  • Johnnie was also partially deaf, hence the hearing aid in his ear. Loved him back then, can remember seeing him in concert in Australia.Amazing !

  • Thank you for sharing this classic - love it.

  • This song touches my heart to no end. Loved it since I was a little girl.

  • i was a very little girl when I first loved johhnies singing. His heart was revealed in his singing. My heart has a part of him in it.

  • i never heard of Johnnie but great post

  • Fantastic sound and video. Great job and thank you.

  • There will never be another Johnnie Ray !! What's so sad is that his life was such a tragedy!!! I've never heard a song by him or Frankie Laine that didn't move me or that I didn't love and enjoy listening to!!!! TenStarsplus !!!!!!!

  • SINATRA...had no great voice......

  • I would prefer him to Sinatra. Johnnie is more transparent and emotional. Somehow vulnerable. Very moving.

  • yeah....

nothing botherd sinatra and if it did im sure he would have had a hit man take care of it lol...that said i tend to go for emotion to...ppl dont realise johnny ray was first and then elvis...but both those guys were heaps better than sinatra...or differnt..its what you like..but i relate to emotion myself as well.

  • @BabybluesLand - Agreed.

  • Talent beyond talent. I don't give a shit what he was. A great gift to music.

  • Unique!

  • agaist all adds jhonny was a real rock and roll prophets , i never thought i was going to see him in the peak of his caree thanks for posting all these videos they really show how wonderful he was

  • Wow. One of the most charismatic performances I can ever remember seeing. He was special.

  • it was mr and mrs c that danced to this song in arnolds....not some heavy teen...lol

  • Tony Bennett called him "The Godfather of Rock 'n Roll"

When I was in San Francisco, there were reports he gave free "concerts" for his acquaintances in certain bars. He did it because he was essentially a nice guy.

It was also reported in JR's bio, that Frank Sinatra ruined his career in Las Vegas. Sinatra apparently hated rock 'n roll, preferring crooners like his idol, Bing Crosby.

Yet Johnnie Ray never hated anyone. He was easygoing and liked people.

He did marry, but was bi.

  • Sinatra hated Johnnie Ray because Ava Garner liked him. Frank was very jealous. Sinatra was also upset because Johnnie was so popular while Frank's star was fading.

  • Was married, BUT was bi? What? How about was married AND was bi? You make it sound as if being bi is some negating condition, according to the use fo the word "but". You didn't mean this pejoratively, surely?

  • I think renew2day meant that he was married ie he was on the face of it, a purely heterosexual man, yet he was secretly bisexual.

A great talent and singer, that's what matters.

  • i used to watch happy days, and in an episode at arnolds, a heavy teen boy and girl were dancing to this at the end of the episode. i fell in love with the song.

i totally forgot about it , yrs later after i had my daughter i thought about itfor some reason , i wanted to sing it to her only knew a few lines. i asked my mom if she knew what episode of happy day i was thinking of and she knew who sang it. i was able to find it and my daughter and i can enjoy .

  • Happy Days is where I first heard it too. Much like The Brady Bunch it was forever planted in my brain - even before I knew who sang it. I believe Johnny Ray is one of only a few musicians whose actual original music was featured on Happy Days. Fats Domino was another.

  • @jt20042

what I don't understand is why Ray a true originator of rock and roll is not put in the same league' as Elis Presley and Buddy Holly

  • @jt20042 - Just me. I seem to remember seeing a clip of JR singing in a video way back in 1950 or '51 at the Isle Theater, a movie place in Galveston, Texas, my hometown. He was so different from all of the 'other' singers. His sound was totaly his. I also understand he was a little deaf, was he not? whatever, he was a good artist with a new sound and new way of delivering his music.

  • @Angiesshoreblog I remember that episode well-it was where I discovered this song. It was from the 1st season, where 99% of the Arnold's crowd had to be home early because they were grounded from attending an illegal drag race. That left a heavyset nerdy guy & a nerdy girl in Arnold's-they kept looking at each other as this song kicked off on the jukebox, & eventually danced. Great song!

  • @Angiesshoreblog It sounds like you've found your answer, but just in case - the Happy Days episode you are referring to is from the 1st season and is titled "Guess Who's Coming to Visit", originally airing on February 5, 1974. The original season's theme (Bill Haley's) ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK seems to set the first season in 1955, so hits from the early 50s, such as this 1951 hit (LITTLE WHITE CLOUD THAT CRIED) by Johnnie Ray would still be popular juke box selections as depicted in Arnold's.

  • @Angiesshoreblog the episode you are thinking of was guess who's coming to visit

  • @Angiesshoreblog hey, the episode of happy days you mentioned is from season 1,and the title is "guess who's coming to visit". the ending scene is the sweetest part of the whole show, and the song

" the little white cloud that cried " was perfect. i wish there were more shows today like " happy days".

  • @theewatchman TV today is to violent, too "real"...although I never watched Happy Days, I agree we need shows that are enjoyable...laughable...our country needs a shot of happy.

  • @theewatchman TV today is to violent, too "real"...although I never watched Happy Days, I agree we need shows that are enjoyable...laughable...our country needs a shot of happy.

  • I think Johnnie Ray is mentioned by Van Morrison in his song Sometimes We Cry.

  • Heard this growing up.... I wish I was born on leap year... Cause I wouln't be lying about my age.

  • For All You Country And Western Fans Out There In Radioland, You'll Be Happy To Hear That Johnnie Ray Has A CD Of All Country And Western Songs. It's Called "On The Trail" Sung AS Only Johnnie Can Sing Them. I Am New To Posting, But Certainly Not New To Johnnie Ray. I Can't Say Enough About This Fantastic Singer. Johnnyringoable

  • Johnnie Ray Came Out In A Cloud Of Tears, But He Made A Lot Of People Happy. He Had A Cry In His Voice. He Would Burst Into Emotion With Every Song That He Sang. His Facial Expressions, The Arm Waving, The Clenching Of His Fists. He Made Every Song His Own. Elvis Even Acknowledged That Johnnie Was An Ifluence On Him,. Johnnie, We'll Always Remember You With A Smile, And A Tear In Our Eye.

    Your Pal, Johnny Ringoable

  • I Had A 30 Minute Interview With Johnnie In New York In 1974 I Grew Up On Johnnie And Have Every Record He Ever Recorded. You Name It, I Have It. Plus All The Videos. Also Have A Picture Of Johnnie And I Together.

    Thank You!

  • I remember my mother telling me that Johnny Ray would make the woman, in his audiences, cry whenever he sang. I grew up listening to his music. Thanks for sharing this; it brought back a few memories for me.

  • Your welcome! Happy you enjoyed it. Johnnie Ray was a true original who never gets enough credit for his music. Even Bob Dylan admits to being influenced by Johnnie Ray!

  • Thanks Sandra! This one definitely belongs on YouTube. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • Beautiful!!Thank you for sharing this lovely song and video JT,5******
