  • I got 2 of these for free and I still have them in the box who ever is interested PM me Ill let them go for 300 free shipping

  • Considering the K-Fire is a affordable $200 I'd want to wait till the DX is at least $175 before I'd want to buy this. That and an extended battery life to 2 months minimum would be nice.

  • ofc hes happy when hes got a kindle dx

  • The guy in the second half of the video is at University of Washington by the way.

  • why does it have WiFi access if you want surf the net with it? : o

  • This is such a cool device! I just need something that's specific for 'reading' material and this looks like the ticket, I like how the screen looks like real paper. It's environmentaly friendly too and buying ebooks is so much cheaper.

  • I won't pay $20.00 for something that does one thing , e readers are retarded pointless !! People will buy any thing , I'm going to start shit for $150.00!!

  • @352cisco98 I guess you don't read a lot, you must realised that a bulk of the cost goes into the digitisation of books, a very painstaking process.

  • i've been saving money for this.. if amazon could lower the price......

  • Can I found my topics related to agriculture in this device ??? Please answer me.

  • "There Are Seven Ways to Die in Atlanta..."

    FULTON COUNTY 404 amazon ebook

    In Theaters SUMMER 2011

  • Who ever read ebooks on iPad? A joke?

  • ipad and kindle are way different they both are great but u cant compare them just because they are shaped the same

  • I think Kindle is still far better... now that they have black/grayish version out...

  • So this model is still $379 ?

yes a bit expensive... but it those have text-speak.. those the Ipad Have that?

  • @ParisHidden does

  • @datboydjextreme iStrain more like. Enjoyan uncomfortable reading experience on the iPad, you pathetic Apple fanbitch

  • and its got button you can press!!!!!

  • i wanna buy one sooo bad but im 14 going 15 my parent defienitly wont buy it nut whe i get a job im sooo buying 1 ui love to read i read so much that i got kick out of class cause i was reading instead of paying attention to the teacher lol 1 thing i like the most is the listen to the story cause i walk to school alot n the school is far n i wake up early so my friends dont walk with it will make my 45 minute of walking more fun

  • @divagirlh20 You can just get the Kindle 2 its much cheaper at $189 which is a more reasonable price

  • black and white does not work for textbooks. too bad..

  • The idea of making a device just for reading books, about the same size of an iPad but with less advanced hardware because you don't need that for reading, is great.

However, the Kindle DX almost has the same price as an iPad. Considering this fact, the iPad IS a far better choice, since it's alot more capable and offers a lot more for the price. Even reading eBooks is better on the iPad, with all the nice ways to navigate, bookmark, make notes etc.

  • I have a question, can it open books in cyrillic?

  • OVERPRICED!

  • So, while they continue to lower the price of the kindle, the DX model stays rock solid at $489.00 - What gives?

  • @Youbian It's $379 now.

  • I really love amazon for what they do, but i must say with apple IPAD, kindle DX or KINDLE appears to an E-Reader of past generation. I am so fortunate that i didn't bought expensive Kindle-DX which i was about to buy but thought to check out and borrowed for a day from my friend. It has one good thing which is E-INK and other than that it is just so traditional esp if you have used any apple product.

  • I love my Kindle!

But can anyone tell me how to transfer my PDF's to it?

  • I love my Kindle.

  • I just wanna remark that, I am not a Apple fan and even less a ipad fan. I have gotten a ipad and only took me three days to get bored of it, is just a over-sized iphone. However, there is just ONE thing that I believe ipad is perfect for, and that is a book reader.

The ibook app was just amazing, huge screen, crystal clear. And compare to Kindle DX's 489 price, I think is better to get ipad for 500. Is only about $20 difference, but ipad did trumped Kindle for being a better ebook reader.

  • @Redeemed e-ink, read about it, your eyes will be grateful

  • not having video is bad, as u can now have video in pdf files (embedded or linked i think) . but not even being able to do color!!!!!!!!!

    how gay is that?

fair enough, their screen technology is very different to LCDs & does sound pretty clever (charged particles in fluid or something???). but its a lot of money for no color & no video

guess u've really gotta like words 2 buy one

  • @lancsFrogger says the person who doesn't seem to have the time to spell "and", "you've", and "to". Stick to picture books they're more your level AND they come in color! XD thank's for that laugh though, you really are funny.....

  • $150 is enough for Kindle DX.

  • way better and cheaper than the iPad in my opinion... thought it would be nice if it did have some color. but hey, i'm happy.

  • Sometimes the Future has similarity with the past, like the black and white switch, for documents and general written entertainment. I am looking forward to getting one. The display is awesome, I would like to know more about the method used to make the particles react and the involvement of the touch screen.

  • Don't compare it with Ipad bunch of fucking clueless apple fanboys. Ipad wasnt designed for ereading like Kindle was.

  • @ordinaryman1982

ermm, yes it was. why do you think the introduced the iBook store for it? its designed to be an entertainment tablet. That includes books, videos and pictures. the fact that it does more than this doesnt mean it wasnt designed for e-reading, it just means that they are better at making products with more function for the same price as the kindle.

p.s: no im not an "apple fan boy" they are both great products

  • @joeworrall I think that there are a lot of people who may not want all those features, plus the kindle prices have gone down a lot. I love my Kindle, but then I am not a big tech-person

  • Comment removed

  • well, then i don't really understand why people compare iPad and Kindle.

There are lots of magazines and books that are comparing both, even they are different devices.

  • Kindle is useless. its black & white and only allows you to read books.

  • @dametaverse No shit, that's why it's called an eReader. Some people still read and not just download porn like you can on an ipad.

  • @dametaverse: That's the whole point. Hence the term 'e-reader'. If you want to do more than read, get an ipad. Simple as that.

  • @dametaverse thats whats its meant to do....do you buy a toaster complaining that it cant play music?

  • The Kindle has way better colours than the iPad.

  • why is a Chinese guy in this video? Does amazon has no access to qualified American actors? or more preferable actresses?

  • @iamiteshwar He is Dr. Pierre Chang's youngest kid you fool!

  • @iamiteshwar lol.....

  • I dont know what comes to mind here but good video.

  • this device is cute , unfortunately i have no time to read books, if i did, i would definetely buy this device.

  • But you have plenty of time to waste on YouTube

    Hmmmmmmmmm.

  • @MrSquitwet working on google (youtube) is part of my job so its not really wasted time....

  • Yeah, I can see how uploading videos like "11 Things One Should do in a Lifetime" can turn out to be one's job.

  • but your mom has sex with midgets?

    Hmmmmmmmmm.

    whos the scumbag now?

also, on another note. If your mom had sex with a midget while she was pregnant with you, does that mean you were involved in a threesome with a midget? If thats true, you are a sick piece of crap

  • @mcbrite thats pretty interesting, well if i had known that I wouldnt have said such a comment.

so instead of being a complete jackass next time why dont u wise up, and say that from the start. ur respect level might actually reach above ground level.

  • no color screen??? what year is this?

  • @drsanchez94 ít should be called REKINDLE, rekindle the fires in the caves and lets all wear fur dresses... lol

  • @drsanchez94 what do you need color screen for? Its a book not a computer... unless u cant read and want to look at pictures buy an iPad.

  • Guys just get the normal kindle 2

  • im sorry, but the text to speech on the kindle is just crap. For 489 dollars all they can give u for text to speech is that lousy robot voice. GPSs under 200 have more voices that sound better....dont get me wrong i think the kindle is awesome, but seriously amazon???

  • @thajadewolf

I think that making speech for GPSs is a lot easier than for something like a kindle, because a GPS only has to say a few words, like 'turn left' etc, while kindle has to handle an enourmous amount of words...

    But I don't own a GPS, so I'm just guessing :)

Anyways I agree that it is way too expensive.

I want one so badly.. Not only because the hardware looks supreme, but also because amazon is the best bookstore, with their datamining technology, and large selection of books.

  • @mynamebestname u should check out the night rider garmin i believe had for a while, lol the voice on its a riot

  • @mynamebestname

You got a good point.I overlooked their datamining technology.

  • lmfAOOO

  • that comment is so fucking retarded I don't even know where to begin to explain...

you, good sir, are a fucking moron...

  • @mcbrite, calm down and respect.

  • @thajadewolf Are you my therapist?

You don't see how your comment was idiotic? All a satnav does is take a couple of speech-blocks and fit them together... The same every time basically...

The reader needs to construct entire sentences from scratch...

i.e. you can't compare it WHATSOEVER and if you do your an idiot...

    voilá

  • i want

  • Well the problem we had with e-books its causing bad sight, like when sitting too long at the computer. So these guys solved it with kindle. Another e-book minus - not portable ( except on a laptop or ipod ) they solved it too ))

You could think, ahh this is simple idea to make one of these, but it's a weel thought and marketed idea ( that has big success )

the only minus - price ! ( duh! ) but comparing to laptops its slightly less ( they thought this one too )

  • When you're reading a magazine does it have colors?? =(

  • No. Just black and white.

  • @GreenDotDress Let me ask you this... If you are traveling all the time for long periods of time would you like to read in color and kill your battery in about 5hrs? or just read as you reading most magazines in black and white except for pictures and be able to read for days and days with-ought a charge? just a thought, bc i would love to think ab what im reading and not "where is my cable, my battery is dead"

  • @BlankMessageTV I agree, the Ipad and Kindle are 2 very different devices for different purposes. Kindle is best at reading simple text, replacing lots of voluminous books with a long battery life. That's what it does. The Ipad is for sitting casually on a couch reading RSS feeds or watching a movie/TV show. We're so used to new stuff combining everything it possibly can, but that's not necessarily optimal. I see no reason people wouldn't have both this and an Ipad.

  • Also i believe the ipad can also only run one app at a time.

  • @hughtub you mean iPOD? bc thats exactly what it is...

  • @BlankMessageTV strongly second this comment. the ipad will not be replacing my kindle dx(or many other happy kindle owners i know) any time soon. i mean i already have a laptop, a cell phone that is basically a computer(droid) and a home system, why in hell would anyone want a hybrid of those three machines that doesnt fully do the job of any given one? also the brightness of the ipad would hurt your eyes after hours of reading, at least if its the same as the ipod touch.

  • @BlankMessageTV axaxaxaxa i couldn't tell it better

  • @BlankMessageTV kindle dx is actually ideal for book readers, not that ipad crap. battery lasts like what? weeks. ipad lasts 8 hrs or so thanks to its lcd. kindle imitates books. ipad tries too hard.

  • You are mature, leafy trees.

  • Wouldn't a book be more easier to carry round?

  • not when u can potentially carry upto 3000 of them. Im looking it up now and this paticular one seems to be around 600$ its hard to understand why it costs so much and why you would buy one for that price.

  • Whyyyy did he have to search the twilight books. D:

    Dear lord.

  • no color?!

  • Anyone have advice on what my price expectation should be for a DX? I'm interested in it mainly for reading news at a low price. You could argue that the cost savings on a NY Times subsc. could pay for the Kindle on a little over a year. Seen that way the price seems reasonable. But conversely there is just the plain fact that it seem spendy and a lot of reviews seem to confirm that. I want one but I'm patient too. Should and will the price of a DX come down?

  • @RonnieLeeDuck Buy an ipad. It's only sixty dollars more

  • Why? Based on what I've read and heard about the ipad, it would be more worthwhile to spend the money on the combination of an I phone and a Kindle. Strictly as an e-reader I don't see the i pad beating the Kindle from what I have heard. The readability of E-Ink technology is big for me.

  • @RonnieLeeDuck Try reading a magazine or a text book in black white. Then take away the app store, itunes, storage, and give it a clunky ui and why would anyone want one.

  • Comment removed

  • prooc, had u ever even touch a book??? they are almost always black and white (black is the ink and white the paper for ur information) and if i want it to reed, why i should need itunes? if i need it for reed i need long battery, and ipad dont has one...

  • I agree. It serves its purpose. But Id probably get the regular kindle. This one is pretty pricey.

  • @joacovl who reeds? i think most people READ

  • If you're looking for something cheaper, the DX is definitely not for you. The Kindle DX is $489, but the only major advantage it has over the regular Kindle is the screen is, which is only 6" but $230 cheaper.

  • Goodnight sweet prince.

  • 10 more $ you can get Apple iPad.

  • apple fanboy much?

  • IMO, the kindle is a great idea, but the ipad is just a really big itouch, which is gay. ipad does more though...

  • Yeah but Kindle was specially made for reading and its a much better reading device than the tackon one for the ipad. The battery life on the kindle last for days unlike the ipad

  • BIG WOW, longer battery life is gonna me make buy the Kindle (that's only an eBook reader) over the iPad that does mostly everything and does them well. Go and buy your OVERPRICED Kindle toy.

  • @macuser5555 no u go and buy your OVERPRICED iPOD... You people are retarded, you are fighting over two different things. Its like fighting which is better a car or a plane? you dont take a plane to walmart... Get it?!?!?! fighting over a wonna be computer and a BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @comrade86 Pot, meet the kettle. You're yappin' at me for arguing which device is better but you call the iPad a "wannabe computer" and the Kindle a "Book". Well Fuck You!!!

  • @comrade86 Don't be mad at me because Amazon swindled most of you out of $500 for the 9.7" Kindle when you could've spent the same and got a great device like the iPad that will do everything the Kindle does plus so much more. The possibilities are endless with the iPad on what it can do. Let's see, what do you get for $500 on the Kindle? An OVERPRICED "BOOK". You're the retard.

  • @macuser5555

ah applefanbois; boy are they douches.

  • @PonsXAsinorum LOL, you called me a douche? I know about 15 of my classmates at my college that are putting their Kindle's on Craigslist in favor of the iPad. You're just jealous that the Kindle is now a loser just like you.

  • @butmunch34 Yet The iPad Still Completes It :D

  • your mother is ugly

  • i dont know if this question seems dumb or not

    but a question

the kindle or some other ebook reader does they have an option 2 choose how the text should appear i mean like from below 2 the top the slowly up driving text know what i mean

is there an option like this ?

  • No, the screen can't be animated. E-ink is too slow for that. So the page flashes when changed and thats it. No animations.

  • why would you want a touch screen to get finger prints on it ....

  • @mcharpi1 So much fail in that sentence

  • DX

    sad face

    LOL

  • I don't know why sony reader offer touch screen and a reading light for less while Kindle don't even have yet .

  • $500 Ouch!!..that's a laptop...no wonder other companies offer for less.

  • Great comments on whether Kindle is "green " or not. If you drive less just to grab a book or a printed material because you have Kindle, that's "green" also right? Think of the whole process and other implications, not just the gadget itself. If you spend less on printed materials because you have e reader, that's "green" also. . . maybe you can retire earlier, with more savings on your pocket : D

  • I may purchase this. Purrrr chess. Purchase. That's a peculiar word, isn't it.

  • 0:26 that quick shot of gorilla scared me

  • The Kindle swindle.! DRM restricted. That means that they want to kick my ass hard just because I am buying the books. They may delete my books without alerting me. That sucks. I am not that easily tricked. the contrast isn't very impressive if you compare to other e-book devices. The kindle can't read many formats. that is also not so good. my conclusion is that the kindle is overhyped. buy a better e-book reader. ;) Great review!

  • W/ this Kindle shit so expensive, why isn't it color screen w/ colored pages/text/pictures?

  • Color requires a constant signal to control and power an LED.

The E-Ink technology inside is basically a pool of wet ink that is seperated and individually (think pixel size square) triggered by tiny 1-16 electrical positions and signals.

After being triggered it remains in that position without any further electrical signal. It can stay in that state indefinately while you read.

The price is most likely a licensing with E-Ink issue to sell the largest (to date) E-Ink device.

  • black and whiteeeee?

  • I would like to mention I think there is a possibility that physical books will slowly disappear over time. It might take 20 year or so,but there is a good chance that physical books will disappear. I really like my e-reader,but they are quite expensive at this point in time, but year's down the road they probably will be under $100 for e-reader like the kindle dx. I also like the fact that it is helping are planet because tree's are not being cut down.

  • I dont think physical books will ever disappear as there will always be people without internet/enough money to buy these devices even if theyre under say 70 pounds

  • So is it good or not. Based on this video it looks awesome, I think in a few years they will be totally affordable. Isn't it mainly for books as opposed to magazines?

  • it's too fucking expensive...almost 500 bucks? and you have to pay for the books..I mean..COME ON!!

  • What's the price of Kindle DX & features above Kindle 2 ?

  • bring the books back, it's sexy...this is so gay

  • I see you want a world without trees.

Enjoy the reddish sky all day with no night and shortage of air.

  • Trees were not there to produce oxygen 4 million years ago but stromatolites, carrying cyanobacteria which excrete oxygen as a waste product, were. Stromatolites exists today. Killing trees won't contribute to the shortage of oxygen but it will intervene with arboreal habitats.

  • We're looking at evolution. Changing the habitat will yield a change in organisms: viruses and bacteria that we may not yet be ready for. With the loss of trees, man will have to cope with the loss of wood-based products and diseases, not an apocalyptic catastrophe.

Speaking of apocalyptic catastrophe, where do you think the broken and defective

  • Kindles will end up? That's right --Landfills and backyards of minority countries. Paper can be recycled. Recycling plastic is a bit more tricky.

That's not to say that the Kindle doesn't revolutionize portability. It's a conduit for 'free' information and easier accessbility. The question, as with any other rise of an "invention" is how to deal with its waste.

  • Great point! After considering this as a serious issue I looked it up.

    So is the Kindle Green?

The estimation, provided by the journal of Environmental Science and Technology is yes.

Also Amazon offers (and promotes) a Kindle End-Of-Life recycling program.

I cannot confirm below but as far as I can find ...

    2. E-Ink is a non-toxic compound unlike most LCD LED Plasma screens etc.

    3. The kindle contains no mercury.

  • How efficient is its recycling program in terms of the materials recycled?

It's rather obvious that a book can be more easily recycled than kindle but it's good to know that the Kindle is green.

  • This would be true if evolution moved at man's pace. It does not. A common misconception is that evolution is magical and not simply the reward of those most equipped to survive. Nature does not do the equipping only the rewarding through further breeding.

  • What I'm getting at is that because you destroy trees, arboreal habitat changes. The change in habitat can prompt the breeding of viruses or bacteria that can survive in that changing environment and incidently introduce toxins humanity's not prepared to treat.

I'm arguing that the death of trees will affect humans but depletion of air and an end to life will be the least of our worries.

  • MasterThief1324 "Killing tree's won't contribute to the shortage of oxygen". A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year.

  • I was not aware that people can release oxygen. Did you mean to say that a single leafy tree can produce enough oxygen to sustain 10 person for a year?

I disagree. There might be less oxygen, maybe less enough to sustain humanity but there will be enough oxygen to support other organisms. The resevior would be repleshed over a marginal span of time.

I guess it really depends on how mikebhasi define 'shortage'. Mine doesn't account for humanity.

  • Yes, the quantity of oxygen consumed by 10 humans over the course of 1 year would equal the output of oxygen released by a single tree during it's most productive season. This can be expanded upon to say that a tree then must produce an additional 15%-25% during the less productive seasons. Perhaps sustaining up to 12 to 13 people a year. Trees are small contributors but contributors none the less.

I do not believe I suggested people produce oxygen.

I conceed to all other points.

  • "This can be expanded upon to say that a tree then must produce an additional 15%15%-25% during the less productive seasons."

I don't understand the logic here. If a tree in its most productive season can provide enough oxygen for 10 people, then it makes sense to say it should produce less in its less-productive season.

  • I thought I would find it useful for my four magazine subscriptions since I have a mile high stack of wasted paper (of which I only read 30%) .

I was disappointed. The menu for navigating through a magazine is too clunky right now and does not foster the "that looks interesting" bliss of photos next to each article. Rather it dryly lists out each article under categories that tough hard to get in and out of.

  • I agree. The lack of colors, pictures and appealing interface that would improve browsing through a collection of reading could be improved.

  • the guy looks like he's reading a porno mag

  • 2.5 times larger would be 15 inches.

1.6 times larger is accurate. 2.5 is not.

  • He's talking about surface area.

  • Ok good idea I typed in the dimensions and no he's not. Even surface area is only 1.782 times larger. It's easy to lookup you should have tried it
