For those who don't know, "Collectible Automobile" featured this car in its October 2004 issue. SCHWEEEET machine! I'm assuming it's optioned out just about to the hilt.
I used to own a 1965 AMC Marlin. When I moved to Humboldt California from the Hollywood Hills I sold it to a college kid for $1000.00...He was so happy to get a deal that he bought his grandmother back with her checkbook about an hour and a half later. He was so happy to take that car home that his pupils were popping out so far that I thought that it was recess....lol
One of the weirdest sights to have in the rear view mirror at night is this DeSoto, with it's unique headlight configuration. Looked a bit like a UFO in the rear view mirror when one is following me!
I own a '62 New Yorker. I love to freak out the younger crowd at Cruiser Nights when I ask them to locate the trannie shifter. Beautiful car by the way!
Man, what a beautiful car. Virgil Exner created rolling sculptures - pieces of art inside and out. There is not one detail on his cars that he overlooked. You have a fine car. Congratulations!
Very, very nice....from a witness. I had one of those RCA units in my Corvair (aftermarket ARC). Girls loved it! I was expecting you to flip the RCA door up and insert a dozen records....that would have blown everybody away.
I like the 57 and especially the 58 Desotos the best, but the 61's are still beautiful, especially compared to the horrendous styled freakmobiles on the road now. it's delightful, it's delovely, it's Desoto!
Remember me ?....I'm the guy who sold you that car. I'd spot Mildred anywhere, right down to the plastic Jesus. I thought I'd never see it again. Looks great as ever. I'd love to talk to you if possible, lots of questions... Tim
It looks like new. It appears all original like it came out of a time capsule. Cars then had so much character and you could instantly tell one make from another.
So many brands have disappeared since 1961: DeSoto, Rambler, Studebaker, Imperial, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac and now Saturn and Mercury. I'm sure I missed a few but it's sad to see the good ones go.
Love the cars of the Space age! now it looks like we are driving Ziggy's Type of Car! Square ,, plastic,,,,,,Cheap head and tail lights, and Dashboards that look like they were made in Cahoots with Fisher Price!
I love the futuristic speedometer on your 1961 DeSoto as well.
When you drive light shines through it!
I see you also have the optional record player.
Chrysler went to RCA units in 1960,their older Hiway Hi-Fi only played special Chrysler records, the rca played 45's so you could listen to your record collection.
could not agree more with your comments about 55-57 Chevies. To me they are so played out. I think the 58 Belair looks way better. I think the 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer may be the best looking car of the era. I'll also take a 1958 Buick Limited, and a 1959 Mercury Park Lane to round out my favorites of the (former) big 3
My uncle had a 1961 Plymouth Fury, with ultra modern styling. It had a steering wheel that made driving a little awkward, it was made like an airplane's flat on the top and round on the sides. The rear window was huge, it almost went up to the middle of the front seats. It was unique ,but not very practical in the hot summer. The sun really blazed in the back seat. It did have very unique styling and I very seldom see any of those restored.
Exellent condition, looks new. it could be in Mad Men. Beautiful car.

I got one in 1/18 scale and it's beautiful. But I have to say say that in real life is amazing.

I have a 1960 DeSoto Adventurer 2 door hardtop.
These are such beautiful cars, but you seldom ever see them at cars shows or on the road.
I have never understood the obsession folks have with 55-57 chevys.
Compared to the 1957-1961 Forward look cars the GMs are very stodgy and boxy, with VERY small fins.
GM's 1959 line was a direct reaction to Chryslers forward look cars, the 1959 Buick is their best example.
They even ripped off the beautiful low 2 door hardtop roofline.

Thought the top of the taillight housings were supposed to be painted body color, not chrome.
bitterrick 2 years ago
Only in the early car you see in the catalog and silent film has that painted fin. All production cars were chrome.
