Gary Kurtz was the real brains behind the original SW trilogy.

When Kurtz left after the first two films (arguably the best two) the series took a turn for the infantile - Ewoks, Jar Jar, Younglings et al. Kurtz actually wanted Han Solo to die at the end to add emotional weight to the story, Last of the Mohicans style!

Do the math, the true SW is not Lucas' brainchild. Without Kurtz there would be no original trilogy, only special effects schlock like the prequels.
