I REALLY want to use Pardus, but I'm already have so much on my PC that has Zorin OS, is there a way that I can just install the destop session from Pardus? (Session as in Unity, GNOME, KDE Plasma, etc.)
I would rather have Pardus have a Gnome 2.x as a default then a KDE. KDE is pretty cool, but not for power users. The themes are not the nicest either.
The packages are up to 5,000 now on the default repo. there are 6 other repos but they are not Listed on the pardus website and i cant remember what they are. i found them on Google in the forum links. look there. and recordmydesktop is install by default BTW. but only the core not the front end. you can run it from inside kden live or terminal.
I absolutely love Pardus!!! Its so professional and grown up. One problem though:
All of the software I use I cant get because of lack of repositories. Is there a way around this? Please help if you can, because then I can ditch Mint 10. For example, no WINE, or PICASA, etc.
If only It had the software available its the best distro ever. Until then, not yet.
yeah that is the main problem with Pardus.... It's a bit of a deal breaker. Only thing you can really do is find the source code of the program you want and manually compile it..........
@Linux4UnMe Im getting used to linux, but no nothing about coding and have only compiled one thing from a tutorial so I don't think that would work for me.
For their next release they should strongly focus on the repositories. It seems like everything else is there, its stable, fast, professional, and hardware support is excellent.
yeah i know.... it's a real bummer for Pardus. I don't know why they bother putting in so much work into it and not into the single most important thing....... "package selection"
@Cambaudio There is a page in the Pardus wiki that explains how to convert a .rpm package to .pisi. I personally have not used it; but, it looks a whole lot easier than compiling something from source. Wine was in the 2009 repository. I know because I installed it. I've just checked the 2011 repository and the package manager says it is there. Did you refresh the repository after install? It currently has 4,314 packages.
@tyreae Okay thanks. I was using the 64-bit version and couldn't find it. Having Wine adds a megaload of programs you can use with it then, like Picasa. Thats great news.
I have installed yesterday and following two issues
1) Default graphic option does not work and goes blanks (completely black) after typing username and password, enter. Option FailSave work but display is very bad.
2) My Belkin wireless card does not work.
I am new to Linux hence do not know how to fix these two issues. Please help.
hi... I am curious to know as to why you tried Pardus for your first Linux install? To be honest.... it's not there yet...
If you want an easy to use Linux Distro that works out of the box Try LinuxMint 11. I am not very familiar with Pardus so I can't help you much with this sorry...
what are the languages you can choose from other than english and turkish? also, can you zoom in and out ? you know with compiz you can zoom in and out by pressing the super button and the mouse scroller. can u use compiz with pardus? and what about a software center and package manager?
not sure but I know there are 9 languages. Yes you can zoom in and out in Kwin, Yes you can use compiz instead of kwin, No software centre Yes package Manager. I didn't find a huge collection of software on pardus though and never found any current 3rd party repositories with more software. quite diappointing really
Try playing hd videos with hardware acceleration in pardus.....You cant enable vdpau in smplayer. In mint everything works. And come on seriously, no conky in pardus??
1. Make sure you have downloaded the install iso, not the live cd iso. The latter will not install anything to your pc.
2. Unetbootin will not work. You need either isowriter or mandriva-seed.sh There are instructions at the wiki Installation of Pardus 2008/2009/2011 on a Netbook.
3. If you have problems, ask at the forum. I've always had prompt, friendly replies.
I'm a Linux newbie and was able to do this easily.
I'm a Linux newbie who has been using Pardus since last January and find that Pardus is one of the most user friendly distros available. It has been a bit lean on packages, but the 2011 version looks very well stocked this time around.
One thing to be noted is that Pardus is not based on any other distro, It's built from the ground up.
Nice, I love how professional it seems, I agree its a pity it doesn't seem to be more popular. Though I'd personally be ripping out all those doubled up apps and the GTK ones lol
yer I usually skip the installation parts to my reviews because it's so easy I figure nobody wants to watch those parts. Plus my reviews are long enough as it is. Don't wanna over bore anybody. haha
Pardus looks really professional, shame its not as popular as it should be! If given the choice, would you use pardus as your Distro? Or are you glued to arch? lol
hhhmmmmm. If Pardus had a similiar package number in the repos as Arch, debian or ubuntu, I would probably Use it as a secondary or third Operating System. Then again.... There isn't really any distro out there that I will ever like more than Arch. But I do use Several Distros at the same time like Mint, Debian, ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, mandriva etc etc

I will add that it will not be a "contrib" package to the final 2011 version like in the previous 2009.2. It will be included in the ordinary repo.
This is a release candidate so more software/programs will be added to the real version which probably be avaible in 20 january.
I can add that they have more employed people than before to. It was only 20 developers employed, will be about 40 now. And to 2011 around 50 people.
So I think very soon they be among the top ten in Distrowatch list.
