I am 16 years old and started at about the age of 12. I started trying to learn C++ which was a stupid idea, as I was just a little child who wanted to make an MMORPG at the time. Then I realized the realism of the situation, it would take me some serious practice. I started making games in AS2 (flash script) and then I was almost forced into learning AS3, so I did. Now, 4 years later, I found a pal and we are making an online RPG with a Map-Editor, PvP and more. Train, and it'll be worth it!.
I really admire your work Lussika. Your productive and have applied what you learned in games well (fromm what i've seen). your video on pickin sticks (as well as 2 others) inspired me to start messing around with Allegro instead of waiting for college and such. I've done fairly well i think, i've done a few programs and am getting the hang of basics fairly well so...yeah. thank you
who got u started on programing and game making? how supportive were the people around u at that time?
game making is hard but is fun and you learn so much about the virtual and real world, is like knowing how the universe works :0, good sensation in the end and is why i like it so much
u r a rare gem , am sure anyone would love having u in their team or workplace
I just liked playing video games, and was infatuated with anything related to computers.
My step brother originally had wanted to be a game programmer, which made me realize that people actually made games I guess (was young o.0). He didn't keep up with it though.
As for support, neither of my parents were really interested in the stuff I made, so it was kind of annoying, but they did provide me with books and such.
@LusikkaMage Same here. None of my friends are interested and my parents don't give a damn. They only seem to respect the fact that I want to spend most of my time in my room programming. If you are an attention seeker and want to be noticed, do not do programming until you have left school and are in college XD
The language I use is C++, with the Code::Blocks IDE. I usually use it with either Allegro or SDL to handle graphics, input, sound, etc. (I started with Allegro but now have been using SDL more)
For graphics, I usually use Paint Shop Pro 6, and for music I just have a spiffy keyboard (piano, not compy keyboard)
Ha ha, this video was really reminiscent for me. I started out on VB3.0 when I was 13. Thank goodness I've moved to C++ & SDL. Is allegro the same as SDL?
How did you learn about sockets? I can't find any good easy-to-learn resources and I have tried a lot with different things and I don't get anything to work well T.T
Very interesting video. It's actually pretty sad that we can't all go back and look over our old work - the only thing I have from the 8-bit era is a SEUCK game on a cassette.
Thank god for the interweb, at least the last 8 or 9 years are preserved somewhat.
i hate unfinished projects, i have too many unfinished projects but the good things is now i have time to actually finished them well at least a month anyway yay
Really inspirational video! I completely agree about taking baby steps. I've been programming for about 6-7 years, and I still think the "baby step" approach is the best way to go about developing a game. Otherwise, like you said, it's easy to get overwhelmed.
I really only learned about the basics of C++ and stuff like Data Structures from school, by no means was there anything related to game development. (Or, sadly, large program structure in general)
i just started to program last year, i was 18 at that time. my school also dont teach game dev stuff. but yeah data stuctures sure help me finish a clone of sudoku and minesweeper.
i want to join your team, but i'll be a pain in the ass.
Eheh, I don't really have a team going right now, the SW team was just for one semester. This Spring I'll probably just do some small things while applying for jobs...

Wow, you make games pretty quickly. All I did was some crappy shoot-em-ups and basic graphic engines. I gotta see what else you'd do with 3D.

songofisles 2 years ago
Allegro is pretty similar to SDL. It handles graphics, sound, input, etc, but doesn't have as many features.
LusikkaMage 2 years ago
Well features aren't really that important. I'm happy enough with speedy blitting. Does allegro have transparencies though?
songofisles 2 years ago
Hey Rachel, you've got a new fan from Brazil. I wish I had a computer when I was 12 too! :)
By the way, how do you control time for the animations in your SDL games?
I had some trouble with choppy movement. I've been so busy lately but I'm trying to find some time to revisit that.
Congrats!

i bought my first c++ book when i was 13, the book was horrible...
on my 15th, i bought a new c++ book.
learned c++ in some months and bought a book about opengl.
learned some stuff about asm (intel syntax).
now, being 16 years old, i've became a quite good programmer and made some interesting things.

aldex123 2 years ago
I guess the main resource is Beej's Socket Tutorial, though even that and whatever you can find on google is a bit hard.
Once I get back into it, I think that learning a bit about multiprocessing and even more about multithreading is going to help understand more.

Just a simple Tetris clone in java and a Tic Tac Toe in C++ with SDL :P
I've played around with ActionScript and Flash and they make things a lot easier if you're a noob programmer.
Cheers!
