It is linear, as were all Final Fantasies, but it has a fantastic battle system and extremely beautiful cutscenes.

I bought the import, and I'll still be getting it on March 9.

The extra content that was "cut" was never done at all. It was nothing but ideas that the developers had and never used. That isn't "cutting it off", it's just concept ideas that they decided would do nothing inside the game. Don't forget that this whole mythology and Universe is part of Fabula Nova Crystallis, so these ideas that weren't used in FFXIII will very likely appear on other games like Agito and Versus.
