@lekkerbekje Asses are donkeys. The family of donkeys is called asinus. Males are jacks and females are jennys, hence the term jackass. Donkeys were seen as rather dimwitted creatures and it became insulting to call a person a donkey - they were being an ass. They're also known to be quite fast animals and can get a bit out of hand if you don't treat them right. Like the other movements of CotA, it evokes imagery of the animals: some downright wild asses running all over the place.

When I first listened to this piece I was unaware that it was supposed to be for two pianists.

It's still (obviously) very intricate to play it with two pianists, but the thought of just one pianist playing that is rather amusing.
