@mstngjay In training you're taught to keep the engines going in case there's a need to go around. Besides after any prop strike with engines running or not it's required to do a complete tear down and inspection. The engines on this plane were 200 hours before TBO so we got out money's worth from them.
Best gear up video on the net! I love the sound and have always wanted to know what a gear up would sound like from in the cabin. Thanks. Nice sunset as well!
@CampKohler I can't get into the repair cost but I can tell you it was a lot. They used a crane to lift it off the runway then we swung the gear down and locked it in place and then it was towed it to the ramp. After estimates and all the hoops later it then flew off, was repaired and then returned us good as new
@Fullagas The valve on the blow down bottle malfunctioned also so it was forcing us to land gear up. Trust me we tried everything to get the gear down.
Good job!. But the insurance companies, on a wheels-up landing or any case that results in a sudden engine stoppage, will pay for the tear-down, inspection and repair of stoppage damaged parts, but not the full overhaul.
I realise everyones opinion is different, especially arm chair pilots, but ask most LAMES/Aircraft Engineers as well as most flying instructors worth their salt, and they will tell you to keep the engine running in a gear up landing. Gives you the luxury of a go around if you aren't happy with the approach.During all of my pilot training i was told this, under the advice that an engine is alot easier to replace than someones life if the approach was too shallow etc.in other words, read the POH.
@mmj901 My thoughts EXACTLY! If the props were to strike without the engine running then there is a good you might get away without tearing down the engine and replacing it completely. I have always thought that I would kill the engines right before touchdown if I were ever faced with an emergency.
@F1FanaticGT3 No matter the FAA rules state that any engine strike running or not on Lycoming engines require a TDIR "tear down inspect repair" The engines in the video shown were at idle with the prop feathered at impact. The engines were 200 hrs before TBO so needless to say we got our money's worth from them. Just thought some of you would like to know since I've seen several comments on this subject.
"Mr. Pilot"... nerves of steel, you are. You obviously know what you are doing. It's not like you can practice that. Very impressive to this student pilot.
Putting it down on grass would be highly dangerous because there are too many unknowns such as rocks, boulders, mounds, etc that could bounce the airplane or send it cartwheeling. Though you are concerned about the damage caused to your aircraft when landing gear up, the primary concern is the safety of the crew/passengers, therefore making the gear up landing on the runway much more desireable.
Just a question...maybe dumb or not...but why couold you havenot landed on the grass next to the runway? Would landing, gear up on the grass done less damage? I really dont know here, so if anyone has an answer...I would appreciate it.
I was working the day you landed this plane in middle of 14 at KSGF. Just want to say nicely done, sir! I was also impressed to see the aircraft operating under her own power so soon.

Great job! Just curious, but why not shut down the engine before touch down so they don't get destroyed with the props?

Curious as to why the pilot didn't kill the engines immediately prior to touching down, rather than damaging them with prop strikes.
mmj901 11 months ago
@mmj901 To me it looked like at least the left prop never struck the ground and was killed off.
