The first time I heard this, I immediately thought of King Arthur and that entire legend. It reminds me of Arthur's final voyage to Avalon a bit. The ancient drums also invoke the image, to me, of tribal and scattered Albion, right before Arthur came to be. Very cultural for Oceanlab :)

You know those kind of songs that just get into your soul, and your whole body seems to shiver with emotion when you listen to them? I call those "soul songs". Ashes is such a song.

@Ear3nd3L Pikes are awesome, I use them sometimes, they really create an atmosphere. I might be wrong, but I think its a synth with a short release, (Doesnt stay for long) with reeverb attatched. I used one in my song "by the beach".

@DjSte4705 yes, you are right. short release and minimal attack time. thats why they are called pikes, because they sound "sharp". the common presets in VSTs are quite boring, but if you process them in many layers like pikes + piano, pikes + pan flute, pikes + whatever else (there are so many presets to combine with) it can be very awesome :) Best regards

That's a fantastic comment, StrikeSkunk, but I think you're mistaken. The reason why Oceanlab connects with so many people is because the world is full of the supernatural: from religion to movie stars to geniuses, we have many euphemisms to describe how we wish to perceive the world more than it is.

What Oceanlab does is take the seemingly mundane and make it look beautiful. "It's just Earth...and it's all we need" is a very good description of Oceanlab. It's very anti-"out of this world".
