Piero Piccioni was commissioned to do a soundtrack for the Italian released version of Contempt and it's also fantastic but radically different, very jazzy and heavy on the Hammond organ...as only the maestro could play it
Listening to Contempt and Vertigo back to back, it's a complete shame modern composers aren't capable of creating such compositions that transcend meaning and passion like those two (except A Single Man; that was the last score I heard that emotionally rocked me as much as these two).
There is nothing in the world like that music. In my opinion, it's second only to VERTIGO as the most romantic, tragic and gorgeous music ever created for cinema.
@RubyTuesday717 I agree with you in general except that I like this one better than Vertigo - I guess this one is much more personal, while we cannot really relate ourselves to either one of the characters in Vertigo.
@KaiChippi I like Delerue's music as well, in fact it's my personal favorite score of all time...but I think Herrmann's score to VERTIGO is more vital to the film's success, and therefore the "greatest," whereas LE MEPRIS is my "favorite."
Marvelous movie and music thanx for share!

Exactly. The music is out of this world. And so is this film. Magical and mystical.

I didn't mind that Godard repeated the music so many times, it was wonderful throughout the film/
