  • This solo nearly makes me cry every time I hear it. It's a gorgeously written and executed piece of music. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

  • this is what i call an amazing soloing skills ! i love it !

  • what a lead!!!

  • Gotta tell ya Matt...I was a guitarist for 15 years...started developing serious repetitive stress injuries and as a result, had to give up the instrument I love. I've found that the mechanics of playing the keyboard don't cause me the same pain, and so I've taken on the instrument with the same passion as I once put into guitar.

I must say, your music and your playing with James Labrie, have buoyed me through this storm. From the bottom of my heart, thanks dude. I owe you one!! :)

  • @shwalton75 You are way too kind. Receiving feedback like this makes everything worth it. Thanks for listening, and keep it up! :) -Matt

  • Every time I see you play, you rock

  • Amazing! you rock friend.

  • This keyboard solo is one of my favorites. Brings me back in mind to the Steve Winwood "While you see a chance" era. Just love the feed lead sound and you did such an awesome job at the guitar blend. Thank You.

  • Matt- you are my idol. just sayin'.

  • you are sooo AMAZING!!! keep it up!!! I love all of your videos!! =D

  • wow great playing!

  • awesome,....

    that was great man,....

    cool

  • It's ironic that Dream Theater released "Elements Of Persuasion" tracks online as a distraction from the then-upcoming "Train Of Thought", and it turned out that James' solo album was *far* better than the release it was "covering" for. I'd love for another heavy solo album from JLB with you, Marco, Bryan, and Mangini - each one a top artist on their instrument and together a killer backing band.

  • not a cover, this is the real keyboard player

  • deserves 15 stars, not just 5 :) this totally swept me off of my feet man. Hopefuly I will post a video reply of me doing this solo on guitar. Rock on.

  • Holy shit :D Man this is stellar! you did a very good job... and on the keyboard... hahaha this deserves 10 stars :> I'm learning this solo on guitar now, hopefuly I will post a video response soon. Stay tuned :P

  • Matt, i want you to know that your solos kick major ass! I like your sound, your phrase, your vibrato! Man please tell us about dali's dilemma and if you are going to release another album with James LaBrie perhaps or that solo album of yours...

  • the original solo is played in a keyboard??? omg!! I was wrong thinking it as a guitar.. who plays the keys in that record?

  • You rock dude.

    Johnny

  • Johnny! No. You rock. BTW... anyone reading these comments, please go check out this guy's youtube page! Amazing player AND comedian!

    \m/

    -Matt

  • You should post a new video without the sync issues..

I love the solo, would love the video too i it wasnt for the sync thingy.

    Exellent playing.

    New vid please?

  • Too busy writing tunes! I'll post some new videos when I have more free time. :)

  • Man you do it awesome!!, really, 5/5 of course. Matt Guillory and Alex Argento are keyboard gods.

  • oh my god it's perfect :)

  • Fricken sweet, dude!

I need to learn manual vibrato like that.

    :-D

I'm a keyboardist myself, and I'm thinking of buying a wah pedal. One question though...what's the difference between a wah pedal and sweeping the LPF on your synth?

    thanks

  • Nice job dude...I need to learn manual vibrato like that :-D

I'm also a keyboardist, and I'm considering buying a wah pedal, but I have a question:

Is there a difference between using a wah pedal and using your synths LPF?

    thanks in advance

  • The advantage to using a real wah pedal is that it enables your left hand to focus on vibrato. Having a more independent control of vibrato and wah is more comfortable to me.

  • very nice dude!!

  • Man.... the sound is magical, u got alot of skills xDD

make an other video with both solos and a good sync than it will be 110% perfect xD

  • Awesome dude! the JD-800 is untouchable when it comes to guitarbased lead-sounds! :)

  • does it lag just for me?

  • Definitely a sync issue.

  • nice my friend..

    keep on!!

  • yeah there was no way I thought that was a keyboard..HOLY SHIT....so does he do that crazy neoclassical type solo in Crucify as well? ...(it says second solo Matt Guillory but there are like 3 solos...well..including the intro,he does additional guitar..I wish they were more specific)

  • Intro solo: Sfogli

    1st Solo: Sfogli

    2nd Solo: Guillory

  • Nice thanks...well then DAMN....

  • wait, that was a keyboard solo? god do i feel retarded

  • sweet stuff!

  • good phrasing & dynamics man

  • that was wicked, nice niceee, superb sound too

  • hey dude!!:) I just wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of elements of persuasion! I'm a guitarist and I'm trying to learn every solo on that album!(you play guitars and keyboadrs right??) you and mr. Marco did an amazing job! btw..who plays the initial solo on the first track 'Crucify'?? keep on rocking man and please comment back!!:) Rock forever!! Dejan from Slovenija

  • The first half of the "Crucify" solo from 4:10 - 4:32 is Marco, 4:33 - 4:56 is Matt, playing what I consider by far the best keyboard solo in a metal song. Matt's usage of guitar fx to thicken up the sound makes a world of different, and if why he and Derek Sherinian are masters of *tone* (DS does the same using outboard guitar fx) and unnamed others... aren't.

...and this album proves that MP shouldn't be telling him shit on *how* to sing - his note choices and range are dead-on.

  • that...was...awesome! wish I could do that my Korg X50 ><

  • That was excellent, I think that's probably my favourite solo on the whole album. I'm a guitarist myself and it took me a while to realise it was a keyboard! lol :)

  • Amazing job, not only playing but on the programming of the sound as well. It sounds just like the real recording! I would like to see some more Matt Guillory videos like this!

  • WTF? All this time I thought it was a guitar making that sound. Amazing :-O

  • as a big fan of Elements of Persuasion, thats an ubelieavble cover! loving the use of vibrato, and a very smooth playing style. id be just as happy if that was on the cd...

  • Wow very cool!=) Nice sound too!

  • Matt Guillory = Fantastic Keyboarder ! ..Fantastic phrasing as always ..!! ..It`s time for a solo-album.

  • why do you do vibrato manually? you can just hold the joystick up.

  • All the pro keyboardist actually do the vibrato manually because its more natural that way and takes more skill to do that...

  • I agree with synastikki, although it's definitely harder to do this on basic mod wheels than on the JD's joystick-style bender.
