Still Love This Race, from Kotare Chief, back in 1987, I was sitting in a pub, in Panmure Auckland, watchin' this race, sippin' on some beers, the other Tv commentators, were Phillip Leishman & Grant Nesbitt..
In the last 20 years of the Melbourne Cup, that time has only been beaten once, by Kingston Rule in 1990, who went 3:16.3 for the trip, and still holds the track record at Flemington. I know you can't compare different tracks in this way, but shit, it shows you just how fast the old boy, Kotare Chief went!
I was 11yrs old when this was run and i got my dad to put a dollar each way on kotare chief for me. absolutley brillant run and makes the hairs stand up on my neck and brings a tear to my eyes. he still is and will always be my most favourite race horse. what a horse. jock caddigan is still my favourite jockey too what a pair.
My gosh, I can't believe it! Good old Kotare Chief and Jock Caddigan! I have wonderful memories of my Grandad cackling with glee watching this during our Chrissie holidays, he had it in the camping ground Sweep. What a helluva brave ride, and gee what a run, he might have wobbled over the line, but he ran a bloody good time, and those were no slugs behind him either!
This horse was amazing, best Auckland Cup race ever, that I have seen, exceptional race commentator in Keith Haub who called the race with all class experience, an 8yr old horse, out doing a classy field, such as the Filbert, Royal Heights, no horse could ever repeat, what Kotare Chief did that day in 1987 at Ellerslie Race course, he deserve to win that race.
You just had to see it to believe it watching live at the race track..., I truly remember and even from this day forward, when both my dad, brother, & I watched Kotare Chief did a Houdini act by leading most of the journey, and won very comfortably in easy down, it was an Incredible atmosphere, that day at the Ellieslie race course, where, (Kotare Chief), winning the 1987 Auckland Cup. I wish there were other horses like him, that can pull something special out of the bag... L.O.L
Amazing performance!! I've heard about this race but never actually seen it. There was some quality stayers behind him, including the likes of The Filbert, Royal Heights, Bounty Hawk & Regimental March.
Thanks for putting this one up! I watched the big fella run into second in the Nathan Memorial to get a start in the cup and whacked him good and hard in the 2 miler, I really thought he was a home run - win, trifecta, quinella, double, I got the lot.
What a win - still gets the hairs on the back of the neck going.
Brilliant.(Wish I could pick 'em like that more often!!!)

Fantastic performance. Loved the line about him laying down and having a nap. He sure looked tired those last 200m, but what a time!
