Aretha' voice in the 70s were clearly one of the best chest voices of our time and the tone of her falsetto could not be matched in beauty, power, elegance, and soul. Her ability to arrange a song into a soulful ballad has not faded over the years. Whether Aretha is still the robust 4 to 5 octaves she once was, does not matter, but the fact she FEELS what she sings, then I suggest haters take heed to the "Quiet please, there's a lady on stage" lyric.

ummm, I dont think the awards speak to what I was saying from the beginning. 1000 Grammies arent indicative of what she sings as much as her sales/hits and historical value. I wouldnt take that away from her.I give her props for paving a way for the "black female soloist'. But Im sure there are critics out there who would agree that her "range", begins/ends with "the church" and that particular sound. And thats all well and good if u dig that. Instead of getting into a tit-for-tat about it, like so many other posters, I defend my previous post.I dont post if Im not well read about the facts. Instead of debating Arethas' versatility, I suggest looking up the catalogues of all 3. Listen to Labelle sing, "Who's Watchin the Watcher" and "chameleon/Gypsy Moths".Listen to Chaka sing "Stickey Wicket".Aretha doesnt have the same range.

Im not gonna tear her down because who the hell am I... I will say that NO ONE gives you more "church" in their singing, than her. She's cornered the market on that sound. I like Patti and Chaka more because they're a lot more versatile. They can do everything from hard rock to heavy funk to mainstream pop & r/b and they were doing "neo-soul" before the Badus and Jill Scotts knew how to spell it. I dig Aretha's music and I listen to her quite a bit. But I take her in small doses.
