actually this is what's known as third wave ska. The Jamaican ska you're referring to is called first wave named after the very first ska band, the skatalites. Second wave is generally british, i.e The Specials.

Ska named after the skatalites? Then where did they get the name? I always thought it was the other way around... See, when the fingers 'rest' on the chords, the strumming makes a ska, ska, ska sound. Thus then the name ska was born. Satalites were a big deal, as was all scifi in the early, early sixties, so combining the sound ska, with the popular satalites was a great way to promote not just the band, but the new wave of music they played...

dreds came from many different cultures. vikings, indian, islander, and many more. its not for religion at all really. dreds happen over time when you dont brush/comb your hair. its a common thing to happen. it doesnt really belong to one specific thing.

why all the thumbs down? this guy is right. Even a Rastafarian will tell you that not all Rastas wear dreads and and not all people who wear dreads are Rasta. Dreadlocks go back to ancient Egypt and beyond. Many cultures had the dreadlock hairstyle, even though it is often attributed to Jamaica and Rastafarian culture. That's like saying black and white checkered pattern = ska, which is not always the case. It wasn't invented or used exclusively by the 2-tone label.
