  • great fuckin' drummer, Derek Roddy is a master

  • The kick drum sounds very weak. It's the biggest drum in the whole kit yet it sounds smaller than all the others.

  • What's the fill at 1:31?

  • toms have some sort of weird pre-thudd kind of sound like they have a reverse effect on them...

hmmm maybe its the camera catching the snares or something...

anyway, would of loved to hear them toms with a coated skin head

    snare sound delicious!

  • Holy shit this kit is a thunderstorm.

  • the best part was 0:00 to 5:12

  • I like the part 2:25 i's so cool

  • if you want to show the sound of a drumset, dont use effects like eq and compression, just show the real sound.

  • Can you do a "how to blast like Arnold" video.xDD

  • love the nare sound!

  • smooth!

  • I enjoy the sound of the whole drumset. The toms sound perfect, the bass drum sounds excellent. The snare is birch wood (i prefer birch over maple) and I love it. I'd love to own a Sonor drumset one day.

  • @DamenDrummerBarbee now thats wat i like to hear, i got a sonor kit, is beautifal, n every other drumma i know just wants to get a pearl n tama or even one of thos crap brands.

  • @carlos0on0drums I have played Tama drums and Pearl drums in my time (made up for the current set that I have now) and they had a decent sound But I have also played a Sonor Classic X before and a DW Birch set Nothing beats Sonor though

  • love the groove and feel of roddy....and his blistering blast beats!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i hate blast beats but i love roddy because he can do this....and blast one of the most well versed drummers ever

  • I would love to hear Roddy do a progressive metal project to show of some of his polyrythm abilities and then just blow peoples minds with his blast beats.

  • @95camarov6 check out Today Is The Day's "Axis of Eden". hes the drummer on that album. theyre like a prog/noise/metal band.

  • Wow, is it just my computer or has youtube totally turned the audio to crap on this one? It used to be awesome, now it's really low quality!

  • triggered sounds?

    space wars track

  • no blasts? that surprises me!

  • They sound absolutely gorgeous. Tom's sound like Odin's thunder. Lovely kit.

  • @cdmacdonald2112 The drummer for Amon Amarth should use these :)

  • @cdmacdonald2112 Alot of people expect that tom sound out of the box but it can only be achieved through mic mixing

  • i like toms' sound

  • @PoowadolTonxis haha the toms doesnt really sound lik dat

    only with mics

  • Could plz someone tell me, what Wood are the Toms ect... and what thickness?! Thanks!

  • They are Vintage Birch shells with reinforcement rings.

  • ive never been able to find out so im just goin to ask even tho it mite sound stupid. but what is a reinforcement ring?

    cheers

    james

  • Reinforcement Rings are wood rings that are put inside a drum shell to maintain the roundness of the shell. Reinforcement rings are only really necessary for thin shelled drums.

  • thanks man

  • So these were the Sabian days.I see the edge of an O-zone crash

  • i think these cymbals are meinl cymbals.

  • why are all derek roddy videos posted in loq quality :O

  • THAT SNARE

OH THAT SNARE IS SO AWESOME

  • 2:30 - 3:20 is haake like, love it. Your fuckin wicked man, sick stuff.

  • the Derek Roddy´s set is the same to thomas lang´s set

  • His toms sound amazing. I have a Sonor force 3007 kit and its beautiful. If I dont get a SJC or THRUTH kit next Im for sure getting a SQ2. Although, I bet an SQ2 series kit would sound better than a TRUTH or SJC anyday!

  • Easily.

  • 0:27 insane!madrfaka

  • what heads

  • Stock heads.

    Clear ambassadors on each side.

  • wuooooooooo

  • This is drumming !!!

    All the best...

  • alot of good guys play fucking crazy. im talking about my favs like steve smith, gary novak, morgan agren.. but i dont know, derek just seems to really radiate this awesome feeling. his sound in correlation to his foot patterns. it sounds like real fucking jungle tribe shit. thats where it started.

  • an incredible and versatile drummer!!

  • ooooh man i love this great drum sound the snare sound is so fucking amazing greets from germany

  • shit how does he tune that snare?

  • i think he once said that his tones are normally low tuned...but i guess its because he is playing so fast so the sound will total rumble if the toms are high tuned

  • Actually the opposite is true...the lower the drums are tuned the more all the notes will jumble together when playing fast. Tuning the drums higher gives more attack and less sustain, thus each note is more distinct.

  • yes yes you are right.....iam talking about the tuning of his toms...he tunes them in a way .....for example when you hit the toms at 200 bpm it will just ring(when it is tuned higher) and the sound will be a mess, but he tunes them in a medium tone like one and a half turn of the drum key on each tom.........for example......so that each hit will be audible....by the way his bass drums are just hand tightened.......

  • I like the snare low and fat what is it ?

  • The toms sounds like shit!!

  • naaw its the reverb or micin

  • No tom or drum in this case, ever sounds like shit, really. The sound of the drum all lies in the ear and eye of the player. If you disagree with that than I think its time you found something else better suited to your 'awe so omniscient ear.' Especially, someone so well established like yourself.

  • yeah you're talking youtube quality audio, which only seems to be coming in one channel anyway. dont be a dumbass.

  • why tune your toms high when you can tune them loooooow :D

  • Pearl masters series ! all i can say

  • yep thats what i play

  • i gues this is recorded stereo using two overheads + kick mics. the left overhead seems to be damaged?

  • look at terry bozzios kit. i dont even want to try n and think how much thats going to be worth lol

  • Imagine tuning that kit. Fuck - That!

  • Thats one expensive drumset!!! At least $8,000 all together.

  • These are Sonor SQ2s!! The top of the line Sonor drums. Try making this Sonor set on the SQ2 drum configurator on the Sonor website. Just the drums would be 7,000, not to mention those top of the line Meinl cymbals.

  • yeah dude u were way off

  • that is not really that much.. try paying 15,000. pearl masterworks custom..

  • ill still go for the sonor..... imo SQ2 is way better than Pearl, and cheaper....

  • uh?! :S .... SQ2 cheaper than Pearl? where and when?! :O

but yeh i'm all about sonor

  • everyone has their own opinions.

  • i'd rather spend 15,000+ on drums than on anything else like a car

  • for anyone who wants to know, he has Remo Ambassadors top and bottom ;)

  • sonor drums are famous for their tom's sound.

Especially in the hands of some1 like derek this kit "flies":P

  • really i have one but it doesn't sound that good maybe the tuning is wrong...

  • You can also try some different drumheads.

  • also when u mic drums they sound a lot better than normal. heaps fatter sounding

  • can some plz tell me wat snare he's using via reply , thanks

  • so uhh.. i guess he's with sonor now?

Because with the other vids he used both the Sonor longboard and the CB Axis Double. I'm confused.

  • He uses Axis pedals.

  • well he uses both actually

axis longboards x2 double pedal on his right bass drum and a sonor giant step pedal (single) on his left bass drum

  • he uses the axis double pedal on the right bass drum for the triggered fast stuff. the left has sonor pedal. this bass drum is tuned lower for a deeper hit during certain songs.

  • i can do this shit

  • This is misleading, because that kick is triggered. No normal kick sounds like that unless it has some type of studio help.

  • no offense, but I disagree about the kick. I could be wrong in this case though. Flat beater, tight skin, a couple dif kind of dampeners. My kick sounds very similar but a lil more slappy.

  • Usually kits that have loosely tuned heads

tend to have a "slappy" sound to them, in

    turn making them sound triggered.

That happened to me once and I don't

    trigger my kick.

  • awesome tom-sound!

  • Those floors sound like shit. They're tuned way too low. The rest of the drums sound mediocre. It's not the drums though, as SQ2's are some of the best sounding drums out there.

  • So you mean the settings?

  • They call him the best percussionist in the world for a reason...

  • Bass drum sounds like a bass guitar playing a really low string is playing also.

  • Don't even know what to say. This guy is so good, and the drums... don't get me started. Roddy for the win.

  • How exactly does one tune a snare like that?

  • first you start with a $1200 sq2 snare :)

  • Of course it takes a high quaity snare like the SQ2 but really your hearing 70% of the Micing/Eqing/Gates and 30% of the drums and technique.

  • decent snare, decent head, mic-ing technique, eq-ing and tuning....

  • Sonor wow. It don't get better than SQ2

  • Birch!

  • what kind of wood?

  • Hey Derek, are these meinl in this video...or are they sabian?

  • sounds awesome

  • I want to hear this drums without mics

  • man derek roddy is awesome.

i saw him at cape breton internation drum festival 2 years ago and it waas wicket!

i also saw flow monier, another awesome drummer

  • cape breton like Nov Scotia cape breton? lol i was there last summer

  • yes nova scotia, haha

    i live there

  • me to, im near the new brunswick border =)

  • haha im a caper

  • how money like you for the drums??? I'll pay to 6000 dollars

  • sorry mate

one of those bass drums costs around $2500 itself

  • sorry i meant to click the thumbs up:S

  • THose toms are just crEAMY. Don't forget guys. He's got each tom miked...and more than likely a few room mikes....some Eqing....so really any drums can sound nice when using proper recording techniques. Theres a guy on here doing a solo on a PEarl Export kit and it sounds FANTASTIC! His name is something like FatHeadDrummer.

  • Well to my knowledge Derek Roddy avoids using digital recording technology hes really all about true sound and analog recording (not saying he never or doesn't EQ shit..) but I doubt there was any drastic alteration to make the drum sound better especially if the fucking drum set cost like $15,000.....

  • that bass drum is lame

    the toms are heavenly

  • i want that snare

  • snare that is

  • This is pretty much my dream kit, but at $15,000+, it will have to wait, haha.

  • probably more like $8,000

  • I've built a kit very similar to Roddy's on Sonor's site (it's a thing you can do on the site) and it was like $14,500 for all custom SQ2s. A single 22'' bass was like $2,500.

  • Anyone thinking those are Birch or Beech shell? I'm thinking 8 PLY? I'm the biggest geek here.

  • They are vintage shells, the thinnest sonor has to offer. They are birch drums.

  • I like that he's not just playing a bunch of wanker shit. He's playing some sick grooves.

  • yeah sonor has some amazing drums just wish they had a little better quality mics on them they sound really muffled

  • OH MY GOD.

those toms sound like the end of the world :DDDDDD

    <333

  • any one kno wht kind of snare he uses, the main one

  • its an SQ2...

  • you wanna sell me that kit? ;-)

  • haha yeah sure, only costs about 15 grand

  • Those toms and kick are like thunder. No muffling is getting near those babies!

  • WHAT CYMBALS!!!

    (love the kit also)

  • Even though he is a Meinl endorsee i think these are Sabian cymbals. If you look in the far left of the screen just above his hats, thats an O-Zone crash (either AAX or HHX Evolution). Yes i'm a geek I am aware! They also sound a lot like Sabians rather than Meinl.

  • but the china he hits at 1:23 looks like a novo china

  • might be the angle, though.

why the heck this comment is up here? this was a response to jimedwards1982's comment.

    i hate you, youtube.

  • if im not mistaken, this video was taken prior to his Meinl Endorsement.......he was still using sabians then

  • does any body know if derek studied music anywhere? lessons as a kid? or did he just figure things out with a lot of time behind the kit?

  • Self taught brah

  • cool! i didnt know you played sonors! meinl and sonor is a dedly combo ^^

  • mic the snare from top and bottom?

  • Bottom and top

  • What are those minihats he uses at 2:43? They sound awesome :)

    ..

The entire kit sounds fucking awesome!

  • AA or HH minihats by Sabian

  • It is a Sabian 10" aax splash top hat with a Will Calhoun signature 10" alien disc as the bottom hi-hat.

  • his bassdrum sounds quite weird on this video

  • yeah that's made in Germany you can hear the

    Ouality

  • lol

  • ok that's your opinion, but don't be abusing

because I didn't say only sonor is good

Quality I like pearl tama and dw as much as

    sonor!:-)

  • lol they are just expensive and most of the meinl cymbal series are produced in turkey ...

  • Only Byzance and MB20 made in Turkey, other series from Germany.

  • Only Byzance and MB20 made in Turkey, other series from Germany.

  • Ohw fuck, his toms sound zoo focking good dude...

  • When i had the sonor s classic a couple years back the toms sounded a lil weird and really hard to tune with every type of drum head remo, evans, the factory heads.

  • Derek actually SOLD me a Sonor drum kit out of Resurrection Drums (954-457-9020) in Hallandale Beach, Florida. This was a few years ago, when he was with Hate Eternal and he was working there during the day. It is a 9-piece Delite kit in Azure Blue Birdseye Maple finish. Beyond how they LOOK, they SOUND even better. They do not call them the Rolls Royce of Drums for nothing.

As for D-Rod, as we locals call him, he is a modest, low key kind of guy who is one of the best drummers I have ever seen.

  • In case you didnt know, Danny Caey from Tool also uses Sonor

  • danny carey uses paiste drums, but maybe i'm wrong now, maybe he really went over sonor

  • Danny uses Paiste Cymbals. Paiste doesnt make drums. But he has used Sonor pretty much since the start of Tool

  • Oh yes they do and Danny Carey uses them! At least he DID use them. The Paiste drums were/are made from melted 2002 cymbals. :-)

  • No Paiste doesn't really make drums. Jeff Ochletree (famous drum tech/maker) made a kit for Danny Carey, the kit you are talking about...Paiste as a company may have had a hand it but they are not a drum kit mfgr. Sonor however makes some of the best kits you can lay hands on. I play a couple vintage (70s/80s) Sonors kits that sound awesome and am saving my lunch money for some SQ2s. They are so sweet I spent my alone time, just me and some lotion, thinking about them.

  • That's what i ment elnokaine...hehe. I actually don't like the sound of the 2002 kit by Jeff Ochletree, very hard sound but that's just personal I guess. Danny Carey is an amazing drummer who would make any drumkit sound amazing though. ;-)

  • The sets are actually made out of recycled Paiste cymbals, I believe.

  • Yeah, he just doesn't tour with it because the bass drum is something like 200lbs.

  • yeah he is famous he plays in Hate Eternal he is really great he plays all kind of drumming jazz funk flamenco metal everything

  • Yes, get a Sonor kit. If Derek Roddy doesn't convince you, look up Jojo Mayer. One of the best alive.

  • I think you should know that Sonor makes ALL their drums with vertical plys. NOT just 14 and bigger..and not just the inner ply.

They've been doing it since they started making drums.

    DW actually copied Sonor.

    D.

  • Does ALL include Sonor Force series manufactured in China?

  • no, the top series in Germany

  • Sonor's descent....want a better bottom end sound for your floors and basses??? try DW Collectors Series... all toms 14" and larger and every single bass drum has the inner ply flipped vertical...giving it a deeper darker sound. You won't be dissappointed...I WASNT!!! However, Sonor is up there with pearl, Tama and DW=)

  • Perfect sound.

    Badass.

  • i absolutely love the 0:31 part...

can anyone cover it and add more cool stuff of that kind??

    id love to see that

  • Love the sound of his toms and snare.

  • its so sweet how diverse derek is in his playing

not all just crazy metal- which is sweet

but its cool to have good techniques like this

  • je prefere une caisse clairesignature 14x8 bois ou metal.laSQ2 sonne super bien mais n'est pas au niveau du model signature.meme le look ne vaut pas un model signature

  • Sounds good, but I would have tuned some of the resonance out myself, if it was my kit. Although I reckon its that boomy as it has standard heads on it. If he stuck new heads on that it would sound even better!

  • No way... They are really quite dead and blatty. Strangley I like that kinda sound with a little more body and resonance.

  • I know I have my toms very resonant. They will ring for quite a while as that is the way to get the best sound from a drum in live and studio situations. Just a little too much on his drums though for my liking. I mean dont get me wrong, I am not your normal Pinstripe whore that tapes the drums up to no end. I like to let my kit breathe!

  • But Derek toms some pretty dead and lifeless in this vid. If you like ore contempory bright, cutting sounds then good on you man. I was refering to the drums sounds from this clip. You can tune your own drums however you like. Personalise them and be original!!!

  • Want this damn Set! What snare fells he use?

  • a sonor sq2. you can custom build your own kit with the sq2 kits. check their website

  • does anyone know how he tunes his toms?

  • I don't think he uses some special tuning methods or stuff like that. Well tuned good heads and good mics are that what makes his kit sound so uber

  • yeah but tension wise, I can tell his batter heads are not tight from the low resonance, Im curious what his resonant heads will be like.

  • idk hiw he tunes his but i use an evans torque drumming key and it meks it sound alot his heads
