I enjoy the sound of the whole drumset. The toms sound perfect, the bass drum sounds excellent. The snare is birch wood (i prefer birch over maple) and I love it. I'd love to own a Sonor drumset one day.
@DamenDrummerBarbee now thats wat i like to hear, i got a sonor kit, is beautifal, n every other drumma i know just wants to get a pearl n tama or even one of thos crap brands.
@carlos0on0drums I have played Tama drums and Pearl drums in my time (made up for the current set that I have now) and they had a decent sound But I have also played a Sonor Classic X before and a DW Birch set Nothing beats Sonor though
I would love to hear Roddy do a progressive metal project to show of some of his polyrythm abilities and then just blow peoples minds with his blast beats.
Reinforcement Rings are wood rings that are put inside a drum shell to maintain the roundness of the shell. Reinforcement rings are only really necessary for thin shelled drums.
His toms sound amazing. I have a Sonor force 3007 kit and its beautiful. If I dont get a SJC or THRUTH kit next Im for sure getting a SQ2. Although, I bet an SQ2 series kit would sound better than a TRUTH or SJC anyday!
alot of good guys play fucking crazy. im talking about my favs like steve smith, gary novak, morgan agren.. but i dont know, derek just seems to really radiate this awesome feeling. his sound in correlation to his foot patterns. it sounds like real fucking jungle tribe shit. thats where it started.
i think he once said that his tones are normally low tuned...but i guess its because he is playing so fast so the sound will total rumble if the toms are high tuned
Actually the opposite is true...the lower the drums are tuned the more all the notes will jumble together when playing fast. Tuning the drums higher gives more attack and less sustain, thus each note is more distinct.
yes yes you are right.....iam talking about the tuning of his toms...he tunes them in a way .....for example when you hit the toms at 200 bpm it will just ring(when it is tuned higher) and the sound will be a mess, but he tunes them in a medium tone like one and a half turn of the drum key on each tom.........for example......so that each hit will be audible....by the way his bass drums are just hand tightened.......
No tom or drum in this case, ever sounds like shit, really. The sound of the drum all lies in the ear and eye of the player. If you disagree with that than I think its time you found something else better suited to your 'awe so omniscient ear.' Especially, someone so well established like yourself.

$8,000 at LEAST! nah . The kit by it self is a Sonar SSE Rock $799.00' $400.00 pedal(guess cant see)' all the cymbals around $1700.00.plus 350$ for hardware. My guess would be that this kit prices all together at around$3,000
These are Sonor SQ2s!! The top of the line Sonor drums. Try making this Sonor set on the SQ2 drum configurator on the Sonor website. Just the drums would be 7,000, not to mention those top of the line Meinl cymbals.
he uses the axis double pedal on the right bass drum for the triggered fast stuff. the left has sonor pedal. this bass drum is tuned lower for a deeper hit during certain songs.
no offense, but I disagree about the kick. I could be wrong in this case though. Flat beater, tight skin, a couple dif kind of dampeners. My kick sounds very similar but a lil more slappy.
Those floors sound like shit. They're tuned way too low. The rest of the drums sound mediocre. It's not the drums though, as SQ2's are some of the best sounding drums out there.

Well to my knowledge Derek Roddy avoids using digital recording technology hes really all about true sound and analog recording (not saying he never or doesn't EQ shit..) but I doubt there was any drastic alteration to make the drum sound better especially if the fucking drum set cost like $15,000.....
I've built a kit very similar to Roddy's on Sonor's site (it's a thing you can do on the site) and it was like $14,500 for all custom SQ2s. A single 22'' bass was like $2,500.

Sounds good, but I would have tuned some of the resonance out myself, if it was my kit. Although I reckon its that boomy as it has standard heads on it. If he stuck new heads on that it would sound even better!
I know I have my toms very resonant. They will ring for quite a while as that is the way to get the best sound from a drum in live and studio situations. Just a little too much on his drums though for my liking. I mean dont get me wrong, I am not your normal Pinstripe whore that tapes the drums up to no end. I like to let my kit breathe!
But Derek toms some pretty dead and lifeless in this vid. If you like ore contempory bright, cutting sounds then good on you man. I was refering to the drums sounds from this clip. You can tune your own drums however you like. Personalise them and be original!!!
great fuckin' drummer, Derek Roddy is a master

Sounds good, but I would have tuned some of the resonance out myself, if it was my kit. Although I reckon its that boomy as it has standard heads on it. If he stuck new heads on that it would sound even better!

No way... They are really quite dead and blatty. Strangley I like that kinda sound with a little more body and resonance.

Personalise them and be original!!!

does anyone know how he tunes his toms?

I don't think he uses some special tuning methods or stuff like that. Well tuned good heads and good mics are that what makes his kit sound so uber

yeah but tension wise, I can tell his batter heads are not tight from the low resonance, Im curious what his resonant heads will be like.
