  • Tu ne fais pas les nuances ( mezzo forte, mezzo piano .....) but it's good !!!

  • I'm almost done working on this, not doing it for solo's [7th grade] but just practicing.

  • @phunnyplace

7th grade? damn dude! I played this sophomore year of college .. although I didn't take mallet percussion seriously until i started college when my lessons were nothing but marimba and timpani

  • @shadowlorde Well i started snare last year, and now i'm on four mallet stuff, and doing some of the george hamilton green stuff. Also good job on this.

  • i just started working on this piece. good piece for beginning 4 mallet players

  • i guess it's too slow...

i'm playin it too but i liky to play it faster and would try to play it with more soft mallets and you have to play it with more passion!! try to feel what this piece wants to say and play it with more expression

you'll see it'll sound much better!

but all in all: good job!

  • as much as I love this instrument .. i can't play with as much passion on it because i'm a beginner on it . .. working on it though...drum set is my main thing

  • nice man, im just learning this song

  • this song is amazing. just try to keep your mallets even. especially your outside right. just looks a little messy. just a little practice! keep up your good work

  • yea id hav to say this is pretty boring but the mallets sound really good lol...you could work on more dynamics.not raggin on ya or nothin i hav the same problem lol.keep it up tho

  • Probably he most boring version of this song i've heard. No dynamic variation as well as no feel/groove. You have to read the sheet better and then release yourself from it. A lot of missing accents etc.

  • At our school rain dance is so cliche. Mbira Song is on the path of being cliche.

It really sucks for new members because they haven't played either one of them yet.

  • what kind of mallets are u using? they sound nice.well done btw

  • Great mallet selection and awesome accuracy. Now you need to work on dynamic variation. Whenever you play the same phrase more than once, try to phrase it differently, just to keep the audience going.

  • I'm in 8th grade and for solo and ensemble I'm playing Rain Dance. It is my first 4-mallet solo and I love it. My friend is playing Mbira song so I wanted to hear it in full swing. And yes, I agree. The marimba is a beautiful instrument and I too have been playing it for 2 years(:

p.s. feb. 16th is my birthday(:

  • raindane is also a goodone. dude u rock. im currently learning mbira song and it is my second year playing as well. ^.^

  • i really like this song my pit instructor wanted me to do it for solo and ensemble but i cant find the music anywhere and im with you on playing but im in high school and am on my third year of playing it really is a beautiful instrument

  • disregard all the other comments about softer mallets. those are the perfect mallets for this song. great tone. The only thing i would suggest is mayb getting a little more of a piston stroke and pull the heads away from the keys because at around 1:00 and all the rythems like it it sound like u r not pullen away enough and really dampening the sound

  • i get yelled at a LOT by my teacher for that. i am still transitioning into learning marimba technique instead of just being a set drummer.

this was recorded when i was only playing marimba for about a year and a 1/2. right now i'm working on some bach lute suites. they are a pain in the balls... but they are so beautiful. when i feel i am decent enough i will record and post them.

  • There is only ONE technique in percussion, it is transferred from instrument to instrument... You should try snare drum first to perfect your technique; instead of rushing straight onto marimba.

  • I am perfectly fine on snare drum technique. and there is a huge difference in technique. on snare i use the rebound to my advantage and can play quite fast.

marimba doesn't have the same rebound. it's a different feel pulling the sound out from just dribbling the stick off the head like a ball.

and pulling the sound out of a snare is a huge waste of energy

  • but sometimes you can use traditional technique on snare. and you don't use snare technique on concert bass and certainly not on marching bass. and the same technique is used on tenors and tympani but not of that on snare or bass. so you see there are really a lot of different techniques. not trying to cause a fight.

  • you are completly correct sir

  • thank u.. i dont know much. i played percussion since 6th grade and im only a sophomore in highschool now... that piece is really cool.

  • yeah...theres quite a difference between technique...sorry bizzyjarce

  • i will NEVER say i am a GREAT mallet player .. as much as i love playing classical precussion .. i am a metal drummer... i can only DREAM to be as good as leigh howard stevens and others... i just posted this .. pretty much .. just beacause ... no real reason.. i'm not godly or even that great .. just wanted to show that a complete metal-head also plays things other than metal (at a mediocre level) ,, basically to show my diversity

  • and you are doing a fine job :) keep up the good work! i for one can only play mallets and pretty much no other percussion.

  • I think that is awesome and have respect for you!

  • well done !

  • i would try using softer mallets, it will sound more dream like, and also more dynamic contrast, i love this song, i played it awhile back, Alice Gomez is my favorite!!!

  • nice job dude but where's your accents and dynamics?

  • thanks.. and to answer your question.. they aren't really there... i'm not too good @ the marimba yet.. i have only been playing 2 years .. only during the college year .. nothing to practice on during the 4 months of summer vacation. and i can't afford a marimba of my own .. i openly admit i completly suck at it. but i LOVE the sound of the instrument

  • the only way i even knew about the accents and stuff is because i have 'mbira song' sheet music sitting right on my desk this very second. i looked at the music while i listened to u play. i clicked on ur vid to see wat it sounded like before i tried to play it. so im glad u posted. it was played very well.... do u have any recommendations of good four mallet solos?

  • Try Mitchell Peters Sea Refractions, and Yellow after the rain.

  • i never heard sea refractions .. but i've played yellow after the rain .. and it is a good one

  • really beautiful :) keep it up

  • i gunna recomend ghanaia if you like the tribal sound. it is more up beat and faster i think of the two very often while im suppose to be listening in african history class. 1&2 mallets should be softer

  • cool. thank you for the reccomendation

  • one of my friends said something about playing on the nodes for musical effect. i hope that helps

  • Need some more contrast in your dynamics. Maybe a softer number one mallet. Good steady tempo, nice job.

  • thanks. and thank you for constructive criticsm. i have to work on dynamics a lot. my teacher is always yelling at me for that.

  • Great stuff! I liked it a lot!

  • very cool....its soo funny metal drummer....and....a watever that thing is....soo cool...very nice

  • Very nice.

  • Crazy man, that sounds kick ass

  • Very nice, calm, great composition!

  • thanks. i really like this song
