For me, Lady Day's the pinnacle. Somehow she blended the pure earth of the Blues with the wild, unpredictable flow and phrasing of Jazz. And brutally honest, real emotion...both in the many brilliant songs she wrote, and songs she covered. Wish I could have known her, but sadly, she died when I was just a kid.
