As a " fishery " i can catch up to 2,500 lbs of striped bass, with the IFQ system im able to catch up to 2,700 lbs, IF and only IF i possess 1 % of the quota. Out of 3,000 fisherman or so, what are the chances of me getting 1 % of the quota ? Truthfully, after allocation, ill be entitle to maybe 100 lbs or so annually. IFQ 's are only feasible in the depletion of the number of fishing vessels. Also, knowledge possessed in regards to harvestation no longer applies. IFQ's benefit ignorance !

Catch shares and quotas, what is the difference? If a million pounds are harvested by IFQ and one million pounds by traditional quotas, what 's the difference ? Also, many species are only available for a month as they migrate ! What good would a year round fishery of IFQ have ? With IFQ, the number of vessels will decrease dramatically putting many vessels out of business, while larger corporations will grasp the majority of the quota !

Looks like someone has too much time on there hands. You cant regulate fishing from a office somewhere inland. And if you change the season times you will endanger stocks. Seasons are set up to protect the fish durring the spawnnig and egg laying perriods if you open the seasons year around youll do more harm than good. Only the true fisherman can regulate catch not a office jockey.

"Run out"?! I guess I didn't have a clear picture of the situation. Though, that seems natural, living in the plains and all.

Luckily, this idea sounds like a good compromise for both sides. More information on the niceties would be great.

Farmed fish or wild caught, big or small, oily or flakey... hard to keep straight what fish are safe versus unsafe. Hopefully there wil be more safe fish.
